Wow, Moala is weighing 370lbs and set the bench press record at 480lb.

Not sure if that's all-time or, freshman-only.

99% certain that is all time.

Possibly in the JT era but not all time. I watched Ron Zenker put up 510 or 520 in the old CMS weigtroom in 1985. Everyvody stopped to watch. EF Hutton moment.

Jesus, 6'2" 370 is freeking massive for any human being much less an 18 or 19 year old kid. Wow.

Part of me worries that he's got some congenital disorder that's going to cause him to die a tragic, early death.

Another part of me wants to try him at right guard and run behind him on fourth down at the goal line.

I defer to your superior knowledge on this subject.

Beardog 26,

I kind of remember that Ron Zenker set another lift record at just over 600lbs but as you know my memory could be flawed. OT my comment the other night about Marcus Allen playing DE as a freshman, perhaps it was tight end or H back.

Many NFL players bench 500+ but never hear of 600

Tommie,
As I said my memory could be flawed, but it was not a bench press it was a different lift.

My thoughts exactly, trying him at right guard that is. Our D-line is deep while the O-line is not. 370 pounds of muscle will make a lot of interesting holes for Bigelow and company.

if anyone has a facebook, take a look at Moala's profile picture. He looks down right scary. He doesn't look 370, more like 290 but he packs the muscle in better than anyone that I have ever seen.

Before you put him at death's door, if you or anyone else saw Moala on the field, he's not fat.

Here are some more pictures of the frosh:

Walls and McClure

Lasco and Bigelow

Thinking Andre the Giant... Moala seems to be a freak of nature. Hopefully a very healthy, happy and successful freak.

Scarlet looks a lot more than two inches taller than Moala Bear in that pic. It's supposed to be 6'4" 255 vs. 6'2" 350 according to the Cal roster.

Good interviews with a lot of freshman, coaches and other players on the Cal athletics Football page, video tab:

angle and perspective. scarlett's standing in front of moala, probably by a foot, if not more. not a good photo to judge height difference. deceiving.

So in comparing Ngata and Moala, I came across this line from wikipedia:

Quote:

He had a 495 lb (225 kg) bench press max, which ranks second all-time among Oregon Ducks football players, behind only Igor Olshansky's 505 lb (229 kg).

So as a frosh, he's only 15 lbs behind where Ngata was as a senior...

As an aside, former Cal Bear Erik Robertson played with Olshansky when he was with the Chargers and told me that Igor was a freak of nature in the weightroom. Just beast mode all the time, including hitting the gym hard after practice during double days.

I think Moala is standing both a foot in front of and a foot behind Scarlett.
