I went with our local Park & Rec dept. As I recall it cost $1.00. I remember coming home with with a CAL pennant and a blue and gold pom pom. My first taste of the college football game expeience. I was 11 years old and a CAL fan for life after that game. Joe Kapp was my hero! Blue & gold were my favorite colors.

Pretty amazing - I was there with my dad (Cal '45) and remember walking straight up to the south entrance. I was 8 years old and can still recall holding his hand, smelling the cigars, popcorn, beer, and roasted peanuts. And Joe Kapp was my dad's hero. I only wish he was alive today to see the Bears under Tedford - he would be very proud. Oh yeah, we bought my mom one of those gold paper flowers with a big blue C in the middle..
Was the COP game. After every score the cheerleaders launched a weather balloon with the score written on the side. Seemed like COP scored first, Cal answered, then COP scored, and so on until Cal ran out of time and lost. My dad (class of '42) had taken me to games in the early fifties and somewhere I have a menu signed by Jackie Jensen and Boots Erb at their restaurant at Jack London Sq. My parents promised me in 1958 that when Cal went to the Rose Bowl again, I could go. A nine year old probably couldn't imagine a 53 year wait back then.
I also remember going to Giants games at Seals Stadium and the Hamm's Beer sign behind the bleachers. At least one 50 year wait has ended. I remember real yellow flowers (Mums?) with a Blue C, or was that just for big games? When I got to Cal couldn't wait to get my rooter's cap, reversible, yellow on one side, blue on the other. I think they stopped selling them by the time I graduated in 1970.
