For better of for worse, I liked Joe. Never did him complain during his tenure at Cal. He got his degree. He clobbered UW at UW. Beat UofA. And led the comeback against WSU with the TD pass to Layrelle(sp?) Cunningham. Apparently he beat Illinois to, but I have no recollection of that at all.

LOL, you may be waiting awhile.

burritos mentioned the highlights of his time @ Cal (great memories btw), but i doubt there will ever be a substantial article on Joe.

He would probably be a heisman contender in chip kelly's offense. Just the wrong fit football-wise for us.

I've known a lot of Cal athletes in my 15 years here, and have never been more proud of one than Joe Ayoob.

He faced a crapstorm of negativity. I remember once a couple of coeds who did not know him, approached him on Sproul Plaza and asked if he was Joe Ayoob. He said "Yes" and in unison they chanted YOU SUCK. Joe kept his composure and walked away. The year after his collapse he tried hard to get his starting job back -- he worked with people to address his weaknesses, he tried and he tried, and while he never got that starting job again, he kept trying and never once whined or complained about the tough deal he had.

He graduated. He didn't assault any women. He didn't take money. He didn't cheat. He is one of the most honorable men I know, and these days I consider him a good friend.

Joe went thru more crap in public that most of us will ever face in our lives, and he stayed strong and true and never quit.

He's a good man.

Agreed. Ayoob was tossed into the fire (spread QB in pro-set, no experience) and unfortunately he didn't do well but he stuck it out, got his degree, didn't complain.

It's easy to measure the winners and tag the losers but life is a bit more complex then that.

Life is full of winners and losers. Joe did not make it on the field. But apart from that he is a winner in the game of Life.

In some ways I have more respect for Ayoob than for Sweeney who left Cal to play for a Div.2 school.
He passed up a scholarship at Cal.
What does he get from playing Div. 2.
Maybe some temporary satisfaction of being on the field a year or two more.

If I were Ayoob's parent, I would be more proud of a son that graduated from Cal; than of a son who played a few years at a Div.2 school.

Great post!

At Fan App Day, his senior year, I shook his hand and told him that all of us thousands of REAL Cal fans would be cheering him on and pulling for him to succeed. He seems like a great guy.

I don't know Sweeney, but maybe his parents are proud of him because he is a good person who makes other people feel good after interacting with him. If the price tag of your parents being proud of you has a degree from a certain college attached to it then earning the pride of your parents seems hardly worth it.

It's not inconceivable that Sweeney would want to follow his father and grandfather and go into coaching after college. If so, the experience of competing for QB1 (even at D2) would be invaluable. At best he would have been 4th string this year, which would not get him the reps or time with coaches to develop his knowledge of the game.

The individual choices made by Ayoob & Sweeney may have been the right ones for them. They are members of the Golden Bear family who do not deserve our disrespect or ridicule.

Cal would have beaten UCLA at Pasadena as well if our special teams did not keep punting the ball to Maurice Drew and have only 10 players on the field when UCLA faked a punt and ran the ball on 4th down. We rushed for 330 yards and Joe passed for 215 yards on 18 completions out of 35.

Joe played well enough to win that game. In addition to ST problems I recall some TE blunders. Ayoob had great potential but was pushed into action (due to Rodger's early departure and Longshore's untimely injury) before he was ready. One can only speculate what could have happened with time to learn the system and adjust from the very different CCSF spread; however, there is no dispute that he is a first class guy. I know many of us wish him success in whatever endeavor he chooses.

Words of wisdom. Joe did well for himself in the school of hard knocks. Any complaints about his play on the field should be directed at JT. What was he thinking?
