i think we're more talented than FSU, but our "heart" is what has been a question mark in recent seasons.

i hope we show some on Saturday and come out of the Stick with a good win.

Last year, Nevada came out like gangbusters and I think we got rattled early and never really got settled in. If I see that kind of dynamic early on in this game, I will really be concerned.

I like how milton knox has become the voice of the "big boys" and tying us in with UCLA.

Senior qb and home crowd remember

Yes, and a Nevada team that's much better. But hey, Fresno will have the home crowd, LOL. Never underestimate the power of a chip on the shoulder. Don't worry, Pat Hill will be playing the "Cal has been scared of us, disrespected us and think we're necks from the SJ Valley" card. I think this is some effective motivation. We're going to have to be ready early. I don't think they'll just sleep walk like CU did against us last year.

Heart? What if your style is impetuous and your defenses inpregnable?

I want your heart

Wait until the Presby posters come over to this board and profess that they will win because they believe in God and Cal doesn't. Will that be the perfect storm?

I can't wait (or maybe I can).

After last season, Cal has something to prove....and that begins with pounding Fresno into submission....if Fresno wins it won't be because we have no heart, it will be because we have no talent or are outcoached.... the fear of getting beat by the Bulldogs should propel us to clown stomp them....

The story is headlined "M. Knox says Cal will overlook Dogs" Really it should say, ucla overlooked Dogs.

Knox is quoted as saying that when he was at ucla he and his teammates overlooked FSU.

"I know they're probably going to look down on us. Me, coming from a Pac12 school, we looked down at Fresno when I was there in 2008," said Knox.

Pat Hill who knows JT personally has a different take.

"UCLA should look into that because they've been beaten the last two times. Cal is going to be ready to play. There's no doubt in my mind. Their players will take it very seriously. I know our players will take it seriously. I think it's a must win for both teams," said Hill.

I think we'll be plenty motivated ourselves coming off th 5-7 season and the longer than average layoff.

I hope so. If this were at Memorial, it would be a no-brainer. But playing at Candlestick, it's a variable we have not dealt with, so I don't know what to expect (esp. if Fresno has more fans than us). I hope it's not like the US men's soccer team playing to partisan Mexican crowds in the U.S.

It won't be because we have insufficient talent.

Seriously. It seems like an attempt by a Fresno State player to stir up his teammates and fanbase, but I don't think it's based in reality. I don't expect a team that went 5-7 last year to overlook its first shot at redemption.

right....in other words, I can't see how we could lose this game unless JT screws it up somehow...

from what I have picked up..not just coming off the 5-7 season with alot to prove, but there are some real depth chart battles going on..Also, alot of first-time game players - jitters? yes. motivation problems? Definitely no..I don't think Candlestick makes that big of a difference first game of the season..They will be jacked! We just need to make it loud for them from the get go!

Eh. It's still the bayarea and fresno isn't very good. I have no worries about motivation for this game. Colorado on the other hand.

It's not really our motivation I'm worried about. I'm worried that Fresno St. will have hatred in their eyes and will play like wounded animals for the way we've "dissed" them over the years. I'm sure Pat Hill has told them that this is their one shot to show Cal who they are. Anyway, I think we will find out in the first 10 minutes whether we should be concerned. We knew we were in a for a long night about the first 10 minutes into the Nevada game. Just like the first 10 minutes of the Oregon State, $C games and Furd games. We tend to fold when we are pushed back. Or at least we did last year. I hope this team has a completely different character. Go Bears!

I'm worried about our motivation. One of the few ways FSU beats us is if we come out flat. If we play with motivation it doesn't really matter how fired up FSU is; we should handle them, barring a bunch of dumb mistakes.

Unfortunately, it's hard to say when a team will come out flat. Remember UT in Knoxville? The external factors all pointed to us coming out pumped for that game. Turned out, not.

Veteran leadership needs to come to the fore because I don't think of JT as an exceptional motivator. Before the game, Cattouse, Kendricks, Holt, Marv and the other upperclassmen need to grab some facemasks and make sure guys' heads are in the right place.

I guess we're their little sisters of the poor. I hate to see what happens if such a sad-sack team as Cal somehow manages to beat them. :chainsaw

actually i think it's an excellent example, but for the wrong reason. Tenn was coming off a 5-7 season and they came out on fire. as bad as herbstreets predictions generally are i remember his for that morning and it was something to the effect of "they've been hearing all off season about how they aren't good anymore and how Cal is going to beat them at their home and I think they are going to come out and upset the bears." and i'm not sure we weren't up for that game really. we played them decent early. but when we went off the rails we went WAY off them. if we were playing at fresno with 90+K fans i'd believe you, but this is only what 30 miles from campus? if anything we are tenn in this situation.

We played them decent early? If you mean the first play of the game for like 30 yards, then OK. After that, it was a buzz saw. That game I believe wasn't about motivation, it was about nerves and being a little scared.

We were scared stiff. Three things I remember being there. One: two of our players running on the field doing the whoop it up thing with a towel to incite the screaming 100,000 opposition. That was not a smart move. Two: in the first quarter, Longshore threw a great pass down the middle which bounced off a receiver's chest (Hawkins?) around their 20; three : Young Syd Q, Dead Man Walking.

Don't read too much into it. It was just an example to show that sometimes we come out flat when we otherwise should have all the motivation in the world. I would name a bunch of conference games where we came out flat so you could find an example you liked, but unfortunately I have blocked the specifics of those losses out of my memory as a coping mechanism.

Our coming out flat and unfocused is probably FSU's best hope. If we come out with intensity and stay away from the really dumb mistakes, it won't matter much how fired up FSU is. A fired up FSU doesn't scare me nearly as much as say a fired up UT because of the disparity in talent and depth. We just need to be ready on our end.

As I recall, Craig Stevens got a bad concussion on the opening kick return. I know Stevens was considered one of, if not the, toughest players on that team - especially as viewed by the players. I have heard, but not from a player personally, that the knock-out shot to Stevens had an effect on the team, and then when the offense sputtered a bit following that first long td play with SydQuan's cast, it just fell apart for us. We stayed close in score, but you could tell in watching the game that things weren't going well.

IQ
Class
Girlfriends that aren't relatives

Oh, but doesn't FSU have our old ST coach??
