Serious question here: how on earth does Texas Tech have enough sway to be part of an expansion plan that involves UT? TTU is located out in the dusty middle of nowhere, with barely any significant athletic heritage, and boasting an academic profile that makes Mississippi State look like a veritable scholastic powerhouse. Look, I like John Denver as much as the next guy, but one famous alum doesn't make Tech a good expansion candidate.

Who does Tech have by the short and curlies such that they can carry this much clout in an expansion discussion? Someone in Lubbock must have nekkid pics of DeLoss Dodds complete with Mack Brown wearing Longhorn cheerleader leather chaps, because there's no other plausible explanation for UT's ongoing linkage with Texas Tech. What's the deal here?

Texass + TT is a political leftover. However it is not unbreakable. All of these legacy ties that bind become less and less influential over time. Five years ago I think people would have said the ties between TAMU and Texass were as strong as they were between TT and Texass. And now look at them.

Texass can be added into a conference without TT, but probably not in this round of realignment. But next year I think. Example: SEC adds TAMU and Mizz and sits at 14. P14 sits after adding the Okies. ACC sits at 14 after adding Syracus and Pitt. Texass decides to give LHN another year by staying with the merged remnants of Little7 and BigLeast. But after a year of completely lackluster games, there are still no major cable/sat co providers that carry LHN. ESPN taps Texass on the shoulder and says they are tired of absorbing LHN's massive burn rate. Texass says they are tired of hearing Texas home recruits say they want to compete against the best in the SEC and P14. Texass calls Larry and asks him to refresh the bid. Larry says, hold on I just made Kansas our #15.
