All have left the program after “internal issues” arose in the last 10 days.

It's odd how these types of issues seem to be following this kid everywhere he goes.

Too bad for Martin and Cal that it didn't work out. He could have been a terror coming off the edge at OLB for us this year.

He only has to survive till 3 years after high school and he's NFL draft eligible. Some sorry excuse for an NFL team will take a look at him. He'd find a home and plenty of mentors.

Are there many examples of guys not playing any college ball and making it in the NFL?

The guy's got plenty of talent, but it seems like he would be so far behind physically (particularly at OLB or DE) plus lack of coaching.

Ferric Collons much?

Collons was on the Patriots and was listed as a Cal alum. I remember him at Cal - most particularly when he wore a red shirt in the student section. I don't think he ever played a down at Cal. I am not sure if he went to a JC or some small school after Cal, but then he ended up in the NFL.

He will never play a down again anywhere. Even the NFL has standards and discipline...............

Matt Cassell.

But no, not many examples, and I don't see any way CM could make it in the league if he's not disciplined enough to make it in college.

sucks that it didnt work out here for Martin, He definitely would've helped our D. If it were somehow possible and he was somehow agreed to some special circumstances I would not mind having him back. He is way too talented to be out of football, seen too many talented kids let off the field situations keep them out of the sport. They raved about him in Gainesville when he was there, he was a monster on their scout team.

he obviously has some mental issues that he needs to deal with and i highly doubt he will ever make any nfl roster including the raiders

I have to think that things would have been different if he stayed in berkeley. Tedford keeps a very good handle on his players.

Reminds me of the old Al Capp cartoon character, Joe Btfsplk, who went around with a perpetual rain cloud hovering over his head:

I doubt it. Tedford demands a lot of self-accountability. Take for example Clay this year. While we don't know what has transpired, Clay broke a rule, and his future is uncertain according to JO's latest entry. Martin already has a misdemeanor for marijuana position. I guarantee that would be a dismal without any questions in Tedford's book. "Good Citizens" is always stated after every Cal game by Tedford, afterall.

No, it wasn't different at Cal at all and I doubt it would be if there were a 2nd try. That short tenure was not good by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't think so. Leaving 3 schools in 1 year does not bode well for his next stop, especially one where he angered just about every player and coach on the team. Plus he has too many of his bad influences nearby in Oakland who were the reasons he left the state in the first place! Face it, the kid is not higher learning institution material.

One of the few NFL players to never attend college. Claimed to have attended the University of Mars.

Actually, Otis did not claim to have gone to U of M (as it were). It was one of the announcers on MNF who came up with that crack. Was it Karras? Dierdorff?

In any event, as I recall, it was a spontaneous comment, as the camera was panning the Raider players and the announcer was giving their names and colleges. When Otis popped onto the screen, with his classic demented look and bald head (not that common at the time), the magic words came out.

Truly funny moment.

Only when he first decided to commit to Cal and then helped to recruit other players. Then it all ended.

Martin can play arena football, or join one of the many pickup teams around the country, or try Canada ... but COLLEGE football is for STUDENT athletes, even if it's a joke at the football factories but not at Cal anymore with Tedford running the program. It is too bad that he couldn't visualize a bright future and let whatever problems he has overwhelm him. I hope he can get his head straight before it's too late.
