ummm....I have to admit to being kicked out of a Cal-UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl (and in the Cal section) after the security guards came to ask my friends to sit down. One of the security guards "overheard" me telling my friend that he was just being a "rent a cop with a power trip." Guess he didn't like that. I did object that it was no grounds for expulsion. The two 300 pound gentlemen that thrust me into the aisle, pushed my face into the cement steps and handcuffed me disagreed.

normally 300# people are not very mobile.

Just walk around until they get tired and need to sit down. Then throw rocks from 15-20' away.

As a dinosaur fan who rarely ventures into a stadium for live events, I've often wondered when standing (like you're part of the action?) came into vogue. I know Texas A & M students have a long history of standing but, it seems to me, it's relatively (in my case, relatively might be as much as 25 years or so) recent elsewhere. At last Saturday's UW game, one young guy was standing just in front of me. Seated immediately behind him were an older couple (she wearing a Stanford hat!) and her male counterpart tapped the guy on the shoulder and asked him to sit down. The young guy gave him a look that said "WTF?" and remained standing. The older gent then tapped him again and repeated his request, at which point the young fellow sat, perhaps noticing he was the only standee in the immediate area. Seems like it's a "when in Rome" issue. If those around you, as in the student section, stand, OK; if you're in the assisted living section, sit.

agree about the "wehn in rome" comment. i personally like to stand, probably because during my tenure at Cal, it was the norm for the student secion to stand for the game.

but obviously if no one around is standing you'd have to be an idiot to block the view of the person behind you.

...at Army and Navy in my mind really started it and many of us "way back when" thought it was really silly. Unfortunately it has become an incredible annoyance and I think it is really prevalent at Raider games from what I can tell.

I consider it, along with grunting from female tennis players, one of the reasons that attending a live sporting event is now devalued. Don't get me wrong here...when at a Cal game and EVERYONE stands up, I am on the bench yelling too. 3rd downs in front of our section or end of game heroics for instance or at huge moments causing game swings. BUT, to believe that some joker wants to spend his time standing in front of me so that I have to stand up for 3 hours to see anything makes my ticket worthless in my opinion. That is why they call it a "seat" and not "standing room." In fact that is what Jerry "the Jerk" Jones will give you at TexASS Stadium now, standing room instead of seats, so maybe there should be a section for people who never want to sit down at the new Memorial also....sounds good to me!

So, I applaud the good folks in Cleveland and hope that attitude spreads. Of course, the people that stand are all part of the "rules and laws are made for you, not me" crowd and believe that they can do anything they want and everyone else be damned.

Was either 1968 or 69 when Cal Played UCLA. And nobody stood. For some reason , they were able to make noise sitting down.

Cal needs to do something when the new Stadium opens so that people that do not want to stand for an entire game don't have their view blocked.I plan on buying season tickets but if I get in a place where this happens, I will not renew. My group has discussed this and we will buy single game tickets as an alternate option. we are all over 60 and couldn't stand for three hours even if we wanted to (and we don't).

Knowing how Sandy Barbour responds to suggestions, I doubt she will even care or consider this potential problem.

Ahhh Veder Bear has started his post with the Infamous Ummmmmm...

That was the taunt in the student section back when I attended CAL ('63-'67) meant to discourage standing. We also had to wear white, wore reversable rooters caps that projected a bolck "C" to the other side of the stadium and did baloon stunts in addition to card stunts. Things change!

One of my most prized Cal possessions. As I started Cal in 59, I was there for the intregraation of the rooting section (women allowed). There was some resistance in the form of pelting coeds with Orange gremlins, but nothing too serious.

I think Baseball has had Standing room only for a long time. Also, I have been to several events where there was standing room that were not sports (eg Ballet).

Interesting you single out Jerry Jones and Texas..

Actually, the "integration" was pre-fall of '59 although I'm not certain of the actual year (fall of '57?). During my time at Cal (ended in January of '59) a student was expelled for grabbing the cheerleader's mike and saying something like "Let's get the broads out of the men's rooting section".

...except when I attended Wimbledon in 1973 and stood through two semis, but I was only 23 and I'll bet that standing room section of it is long gone for high paying seats.

I also agree that I may buy season tickets again, but at 62 have no intention of standing and if my view is blocked, forget about it! However, I used to be in Section U and outside of one idiot, we all seemed to move our butts up and down together so it really was great, but that side will not be remodeled and I am unsure how it will all work next year and of course if the economy still sucks, I have other uses for the cash

Way back just after dinosaur fan was a student (I assume 59bear graduated in 1959) I began attending Cal FB games.

At that time we were asked to stand during all cheers; and during crucial 3d down plays; during any goal line stands; and during All Hail and Hail to Cal.
And any other time the yell leaders said "everybody up"

...gosh, I hadn't thought "everybody up" in a long, long time. Sort of like the water balloons from the giant rubber band when everybody had to grab a piece of it to stretch it far enough to pelt the opposing band or anyone else it was directed at.

As a Freshman, I loved it when the yell leader (using the megaphone) would start: "Everybody Up for a 'CALIFORNIA' spell out!"
Still one of my favorite cheers but not used enough.

The long version especially:
C-A-L-I-F-O-R-NIA

NOT:

C-A-L-I-FOR-NIA

A couple of seasons ago there was a nearly a fight because a guy wouldn't sit down at Memorial. Lots of jawing and barking. He was a Cal fan but not a reg season ticket holder. Security came and told him to sit down or he'd be removed. He sat down. It happens everywhere.

Similar thing happened at the 2007 Tennessee game in my section (west side). Couple non-regular Cal fans refused to sit. They got booted a couple minutes into the game. I hope that was worth the money they spent on the tickets.

I find it amusing that students stand during the game and sit during halftime while the alumni does the opposite: sit during the game and stand during halftime.

The tell people to stay home if they don't want to stand. Most people on the other side would never ssay this. If we all stayed home therre would not be enough revenue to support the program. Just a thought.
