Since we're still in the bye week, here's a part off, part on topic question:

What Cal games did you not attend that you wish you had? What other events did you not attend that you wish you had?

Cal games:
For Big Games, I wish I could have attended the 72 and 75 Big Games. In the non-BG category, I'd put the 2003 SC game (friend's wedding) and the 1991 SC game (away at law school)....and if any of you want to pay me to not attend this year's SC game, I'll also point out that I missed the '85 win over SC while I was a student at Cal.

Events other than Cal games:
It's not even close...I wish I could have been at the Band's "Last Waltz" concert on Thanksgiving of 1976 at the old Winterland in SF.

Cal games:

I wish I was at the Citrus Bowl game. I wish I was at the 93 Cal v. Oregon game. I wish I was at the Cal v. Duke Sweet 16 game. I wish I was at that 3X OT game v. Oregon where Amit when for 39. Did make the 2 OT game with Leon going for 40 against Oregon at Staples.

Other:

I wish I was at Live Aid to see U2. I wish I was in South Korea to see Korea beat Italy and Spain in the knockout rounds at the World Cup. I wish I had seen game 1 of the 1988 World Series at Dodger Stadium. Instead I was in a dorm room at Cal with some other Dodger fans. I wish I was at Super Bowl XIV to see my L.A. Rams v. the Steelers. I wish I had seen Sandy Koufax pitch. Well, Clayton Kershaw is probably good enough for now.

I was working on Encino Man in October 1991 and couldn't make it up to Berkeley for the Cal-UW game. I also skipped the 2006 Holiday Bowl because the parking for the 2004 HB was so screwed up I didn't want to give those bastards my money again. In retrospect, it would have been nice to see Marshawn's last game as a Bear, as he's my favorite player (along with Vinnie Strang) from the Tedford era.

I regret never seeing a Boston concert while Brad Delp was alive. Had a few opportunities, but work always seemed to get in the way.

My senior year I attended the '75 Big Game and afterwards attended the Stephen Stills concert at Maples (Neil Young showed up). At one point Stills scolded the Furds during an acoustic set: "Just because you got your asses kicked in a football game, you don't have to take it out on me. Shut up or I'm outa here."

SI ran this cover on its issue dated two days after the 75 Big Game:

At a rock concert? In 1975? No way......

Hmmm. I've been to a lot of great ones....Big Game 82, Big Game 09, Michigan State 02, Arizona 83, Arizona 93, Oregon 85, Oregon 93, USC 03, UCLA 90, and in Basketball UCLA at Home 86, Villanova at home around then, etc.....

I think I'd have to go with the 38 Rose Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, and I think for games I really wish I'd missed it would have to be Washington State football 84.

Was that the first night game at CMS, in the pouring rain? That one definitely sucked.

I wish I had been at Cal vs. Oregon in 2006, just because everyone still seems to think that was the loudest Memorial has ever been (not sure how they know, but I'll just go with it, man)

Non-Cal events? Kind of a broad question. It would have been cool to be present at the Big Bang when the universe was created....

Cal games-
'67 Big Game win (listened on radio- dad got us bg tickets the next year, partially because we followed the game so well, and proved we were interested enough. It was an exciting game and I wanted to be there.)

'68- win over ucla. Last one before "the streak." Listened to that one with my mom and grandmother.... by that point, *very* frustrating being a fan and not being able to *be* there for what I knew was a big win. And frustrating for years afterwards, not being able to say I had been there for the last win before the streak... when my brother was!

If we're allowed to choose games before we were born- the '38 Rose Bowl- no doubt.

other things-

Well, I'd like to see an Olympic opening or closing ceremony in person before I die, but I can't really say that there's any particular one I wish I had seen. There's really only one event I can think of, that I wanted at the time to be part of and still, all these years later wish I had been: the candlelight march from the Castro to SF City Hall in 1978, the evening of the Milk/Moscone murders. I was 19 and just out- but home ill with mono. I remember watching and crying, and crying, and crying, and thinking, "*Why* am I not *there*???!!! I should be there! I *need* to be there."

1982 Big Game... home sick with the flu, but did get to listen to Joe Starkey's call live. Had almost no idea what was going on from his play by play, (some things never change!), but his excitement was incredible.

2009 Big Game... living in Texas by then, so had to settle for watching on TV. And of course I wear my Cal gear when watching.

1990 UCLA... ending the 18 year losing streak. I was working in DC at the time and of course it wasn't televised back there.

That first poster in this string made me remember that I had tickets to the Last Waltz at Winterland and didn't go. Not even sure why. I did go the Dead's last shows at Winterland in 1974 and they were killer. I was at the 1975 SC game and the 2003 SC game. Its all good when you are a Cal Bear for life!! GO BEARS!

Good choices. When the Rams moved to St. Louis, did you/do you continue to root for them?

...the 1938 Rose Bowl so I could say I once saw Cal win a Rose Bowl. Second would be the Play, but my son was a newborn and that took care of that year, so i would have enjoyed being there too.

Was 8 years old. Heading back from Marin to Berkeley heard Starkey. Told myself I'd never miss a BG again.

'03 USC
'07 @Oregon

'87 Lakers @Celtics (Magic's baby sky hook)
'88 World Series Game 1

Cal:

2003 vs. USC

Other:

Either Woodstock or any of the Summer of Love free concerts in Golden Gate Park. I was just a year or two too young, and just a bit too musically conservative back then. Looking back, though, I would like to be able to say I was there.

Any event ever ? Ever ? How about some of the following:
- Liberation of Paris
- Wright Brothers Flight
- Small step for Mankind

I have watched a lot of terrible Bears' games over 30 years. On the other hand, I feel pretty lucky in that I been able to attend all the following games:
1 '82 big game - the play
2 '90 copper bowl
3 '91 trampling of U$C
4 '91 Citrus bowl
5 '02 Baylor dawn of JT-era, who are these guys ?
6 '03 $C - 3 OTs
7 '03 Insight Bowl - Va Tech shootout
8 '06 Oregon beat down in Berkeley
9 '06 Holiday bowl
10 '07 Tennessee (DJ's punt return)
11 '09 Stanford (Mike M intercepts luck late in Q4)
12 '10 Cal / ASU bball pac-10 champs

Guess I would have liked to have seen the Bears with Jason Kidd beat Duke in the sweet 16 in person rather than on TV.

Since I read the posts fast, and you didn't quote my post, I am confused what "cover" you are referring to but if it is the Muncie SI cover, that cover is dated November 24, 1975 and the Big Game was played on November 22, 1975. If you are talking about something else, never mind.

'71 was in LA; '68 was the last win @ home before the streak. You're right, I should have been more specific- the streak of home losses was actually longer.

Cal related events I would like to have been at:

JFK's speech at Memorial
Mario Savio's speech on Sproul
The march of professors against the loyalty oath in the 50s.

In the 80's, I missed so many games selling wine to tourists up in Napa. I remember being unable to respond to a customer moments after Cal broke the UCLA streak. I also remember standing in a flooded Candlestick parking lot after the NY Giant game and deciding not to get in line overnight for NFC Championship Game tickets. Conditions were horrific at the Stick that night and we just KNEW the Niners would lose to Dallas. So close to The Catch. I'm probably the only Niner fan who doesn't claim to have been there that day.

On a non-football note, a couple of days ago I was in London and attended a black-tie dinner for about 100 people at Windsor castle...I even met Prince Edward...It was an amazing and surreal experience to be able to wander around the place...it wasn't an amazing historical event per se, but I can now add it to my bucket list and cross it off at the same time...I'd still take any Cal football event (especially the big one) any day of the week...

I missed "The Play" Big Game because of a wedding. I can't begin to describe the irrational anger that ensued against this couple. When they finally divorced I was convinced that my own fatwa led to their marital demise for depriving me of a defining experience.

Tried to go to Woodstock with a girl friend. We were stuck in traffic for hours, looked at each other and made a Uturn. We had sex and took drugs but it wasn't in the mud with Jimi playing the Star Spangled Banner.
