RIP Steve...

great speech also at Stanford. Did he have any ties there, and if not, why not do the honors at a Berkeley commencement?

I don't understand your intense desire to discredit Job's accomplishments or refusal to acknowledge his contributions to society. Quite frankly, if you are a Cal student or Cal alum, I am disappointed in you for your insensitivity.

wow. so a company's value to society can be measured by how many times it's been sued?

apple has been at the center of many lawsuits. they've also initiated many lawsuits themselves. many are patent infringement cases. the fact that Apple has patented so many designs/tech/etc. has irked many companies. and yet, it's exactly due to the patents that give rise to competition. Android and other OS/platforms have to think outside of the box in order to give consumers newer and better products. Apple has only helped in that regard.

why are you bitter that Jobs was a successful capitalist? b/c he was filthy rich and you are not?

why even bother responding to that idiot?

He lived in Palo Alto. He was always a Silicon Valley guy.

But he did spend some of his teen years in Berkeley (as the clip I posted above -- of Noah Wyle -- shows).

A visionary, a genius, simply a great man.
He will be missed.

RIP Steve Jobs. He did some good work.

On a side note, it's a little scary that every message board (I'm guessing) had a thread about Jobs the minute his death was announced. Sign of how fragmented the online world is? "In case you spend all your time on this board and don't ever come up for air, here's a news flash for you - Steve Jobs passed away."

Don't feed the troll.

The main player in flight charts even has an iPad app to support this:

I know this is a tangential point we're fighting over, but if you're going to troll around and provoke people, you might as well have your facts straight. And if you're going to argue that it's not an important enough topic to discuss in an OT thread on this board, you're also going to have to argue it's not an important enough topic for the president to release a statement on: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/10/05/president-obama-passing-steve-jobs-he-changed-way-each-us-sees-world

PS. I also mourn the death of Thomas Edison, GE's founder, every year. Do you?

If I was alive when Edison died in 1931, I would have mourned his death, definitely.

I have a pretty good comprehension of Jobs and Apple, Inc. They have been sued many times.

This do no harm mantra is marketing junk.

Jobs was a capitalist, and the only good thing he gave me was a good internet telephone.

I should know better than to feed a troll, but I must point out that "Do no evil" (incorrectly written as do no harm in the original post) is a Google motto.

I have a couple of points.

1. Sucks that he died. He changed the world as few others have.

2. 93gobears has earned a spot on my ignore list

3. Apple under Jobs (regardless of innovation etc) became more evil than Microsoft was at its worst, and did it in a way that makes people think it is still the pure for-the-consumer company (contributing to it's evilness).

When I heard he died it actually ruined my day Amazing how such a smart guy with so much to offer, and so much money could die so "young." Although, its not how long you live, its how you live.

Michael Dell the true visionary...

Quote:

And at the Gartner Symposium and ITxpo97 here today, the CEO of competitor Dell Computer added his voice to the chorus when asked what could be done to fix the Mac maker. His solution was a drastic one.

"What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders," Michael Dell said before a crowd of several thousand IT executives.

Its not that he invented all those nice improvements to phones and computers. Its that he managed the corporate bureaucracy in such a way that those inventions actually made it into products and were easy to use. That sadly is not the norm.

Nicely put.

And only to be ironic, do you mean that Steve Jobs didn't invent my c@$k?

I am not trying to persuade anyone of anything on this topic, but my personal opinion is that the world lost a visionary and the tech industry and bay area lost a leader, and won't quite be the same without him

I tip my hat to Steve. He is an inspiration.

We forget a lot of times that technology is not an ends to a means, it's an enabler of greater things...innovation in physics, chemistry, education, biotech, etc. His achievements help lead others to achieve great things. You don't have to be mother teresa to be remembered and mourned.

If I had to guess, he's probably ignoring you because based on your posts, you seem to be a bitter hater that's rejoicing in a man's death for no apparent reason except to garner more attention on a stupid message board.

I've never purchased an Apple product in my life, so don't think I'm one of these Apple fanboys. Steve Jobs was never my idol or role model. At the same time, the company he helped build is kind of a big deal, and his death is newsworthy no matter what you may think. I said before that your reaction is peculiar. Now it's just sad.

As is often the case, Sarah Palin provides the most memorable eulogy:
Quote:

Certainly he's touched all of us and changed in such a positive way the way that the world communicates. I know personally for us, I was thinking about Steve Jobs this evening, that he touching our family with his ingenuity, with his work ethic, in the invention of the iPad. Our youngest child, he's not able to speak, he communicates via sign language, but he loves his iPad, and he loves to play this Talking Tom game on that, and he's able to kinda communicate with us through that. So, just a personal touch that I think illustrates that Steve Jobs was certainly not a singular man, he was not an isla.. he was an island that touched so many people and he will surely be missed.

Clearly you cared enough to take a cheap shot. No one is saying he was a likely candidate for sainthood but his impact on us in several meaningful ways (technology, music, movies) has been significant. In my case, there was a career impact as the company I worked for insured Apple from it's startup phase into maturity and I spent several years in which it was the single most important account with which I was associated. It was a great organization to do business with, although I never interacted with anyone higher up the food chain than the risk manager.

This is an interesting piece in Slate by a guy who has what Jobs had, an islet-cell tumor in the pancreas, which he takes pains to note is different -- and substantially more curable -- than pancreatic cancer (adenocarcinoma of the pancreas)
