At the end of the season . . . FAIL.<br /><br />I am sure Joe feels this is sufficient to get the heat off of him. He is wrong. <br /><br />The pattern here is obvious. In the face of horrific crimes against children a group of men has consistently underestimated what should be done. <br /><br />McQueary saw the crime and didn't stop it, didn't call police. All he did was tell Paterno. FAIL<br /><br />Paterno, knowing his friend and former assistant sandusky is a child rapist, didn't confront him, didn't call police, didn't try to find the children and help. All he did was tell his supervisor. FAIL<br /><br />Curley and Schultz, knowing one of their emeritus coaches was showering with a child, "horseing around", Fondling, or worse, didn't confront him, didn't call police, didn't try to find the child. All they did was tell Sandusky he couldn't do that sort of thing on campus any more. They didn't even bar him from using the same showers! They only barred him from bringing children. FAIL.<br /><br />Spanier, knowing one of his former coaches was barred from bringing little boys on campus anymore, didn't ask any more questions and fully supports Curley and Schultz. FAIL.<br /><br />The Board of Trustees looks like the community's last hope for someone to step up and do the right thing. Place Paterno on leave until you decide how his tenure will end. Fire Spanier. Fire McQueary. <br /><br />I don't think Paterno should "coach" another game. The Board must remove Paterno now. Whether they fire him, allow him to retire, or ask him to resign, I don't really care. If they (The Board) allow him to "coach" the rest of the games then they are as gutless and complicit as the rest and they should be removed.

he doesn't coach past this weekend. He and PSU will be crucified in the press and it will be a circus at OSU next week. If anyone at PSU has an ounce of sense Paterno will 'resign' sometime next week.

Totally agree, Drunk. 9 of the top 12 posts right now on this site are about Penn State. That's absurd. I realize that fan apathy is the highest it's been in a decade but surely there are other things to talk about.

I would imagine there are lots of threads on it at every school's board. It's dominating websites like Deadspin, it's dominating ESPN's airwaves, etc. It has nothing to do with "fan apathy".

the pattern is 100% predictable. The only difference between this and all the other scandals we read about is that this time the crime is indeed as bad as the cover-up. Paterno won't leave before Saturday because that would be "admitting" wrongdoing and PSU wants to pretend that no one other than those charged did anything improper. Then after a media circus on Saturday, he will "take a leave" before the next game (or, perhaps, the game after that) and quietly retire at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Spanier will resist calls for his resignation, but as soon as things quiet, will retire to "spend more time with (his) family."<br /><br />And PSU won't understand why they are being crucified in the press and elsewhere.

For all those who have knowledge in this area, what are the financial consequences between resigning and being fired? If the coach is fired this week, will he get full retirement and is University exposed to lawsuit by him?<br /><br />I know financial matters seem trivial compared to the crimes but I'm sure all sides at the University are thinking about this.

It is the difference between an ingrown toenail and a traumatic brain injury. I would assume the only worse thing would be if a team was found to be sacraficing freshman and eating their hearts between games...<br /><br />This is as big as a scandle gets. Couple that with members (JoPa) being as much modern College Football as the forward pass, and it becomes one of the biggest deals in in the country, let alone sports.

After all the trashing of the Cal football performance as of late, this Paterno story puts the whole matter in a sobering perspective. It also makes us all reflect when some programs make false gods of coaches and programs.

He should not be allowed to dictate the terms of his departure. They go through this "will he retire?" issue every year at PSU and he always comes back....because its "Joe Paterno". <br /><br />I think the Board of Trustees are probably sideways with this. Ultimately, though, you can't wait till the end of the season. The circus will just go on and will dominate every headline for the next few Saturday's. They will likely ask him to resign, which he won't do because he's already announced his retirement. They will need to fire him. A terrible, but perhaps deserved end to his career.

Can we bring this back to football? The failure of the PSU Trustees to bench Paterno is EXACTLY analogous to Tedford refusing to bench Maynard. He met his legal responsibility to report what was reported to him. Fine. <br /><br />What is in question is whether he should lose his job over this. I contend that he should and that he should not be allowed to determine, on his own, when he should step away. You believe that tenure prevents his firing. I believe that this is the issue that the Board of Trustees is deciding, along with firing the university president.<br /><br />To me, the choices are:<br /><br />1. Let him finish it out as the head coach.<br />2. Let him finish it out but not be on the sideline or the booth either at home or away.<br />3. Fire him and face a lawsuit. They probably had the "force him to step away/resign" option taken from them when he announced he would retire at the end of the season. <br /><br />In my opinion, this was a very d*ck move on his part as he is now forcing the Board of Trustees to make a decision on his terms.

It's a lot bigger deal than some football game. That's the point that the Pennophile State people don't seem to understand.
