Gentleman - none of this matters. Maynard is the QB - whether he deserves it or not. 2012 will be as routine and I exciting as your typical Bears season of the 60s, 70s and 80s. We'll go 7-5 or 6-6. We will slip back to mediocrity, Tedford will keep his job and the diehards will be pissed and the fair weathers will shrug and go home. It is what it is.

You do know that Cal can go no-huddle and get playcalls via sideline hand-signals to run more uptempo, right? They done it successfully from Week 1.

It doesn't take a troll like you to realize that Cal can go both huddle and no-huddle but it's up to the coaches to make that decision BEFORE the offensive series even begins.

Agreed, though the coaches can switch to no huddle during an offensive series. Why they chose not to do so at the end of each half is a mystery. I would hope that a coach who makes millions of dollars each year could provide a satisfactory explanation.

calumnus;661266 said:

Exactly. I cannot believe that people here actually think Tedford lets Maynard decide whether to huddle or not to huddle.

If you look at our offense, we huddle every play, then we go to the line, then everyone looks over to the sideline as a new play is signaled in, Maynard tries to direct people to the right spot, we rush the snap.... it is what we do.

I don't know why we don't just go no huddle with a standard formation and signal in the play to begin with.

The amount of time we waste before each play is baffling, and despite all the pre-snap discussion and manipulation (and the secret, closed practices) the other team often seems to know exactly what we're doing. Oregon has a far more effective offense with a huddle by holding up cards that allow the entire team to see the formation at the same time.

Cal_Fan2;661362 said:

Maybe because he never has been to San Diego and likes it...maybe because he thinks he is a lock at QB next year no matter what.....considering the fact I've seen him very pouty and frowning on the sidelines after poor play, I wonder why his change of disposition.

Maybe he was being a leader by attempting to console a despondent Calvin who spent most of his career injured and ended with an embarrassing loss. BTW, I also saw JT smiling after the game as he did following the Big Game.

SchadenBear;661732 said:

...I could certainly see how smiling during losses could provide effective team management and be considered a form of leadership.

Could be.

davetdds;661798 said:

I don't have evidence, but I have on more than one occasion seen Maynard, look pouty, disgusted. Clearly ZM is a D1, and Pac-12 Quality QB.

Most of his numbers are in the bottom half of Pac-12 QBs. Heck, the only QBs with a lower QB rating than him are Hansen, Hays/Wynn, and Tuel, which isn't exactly company you want to be around. Sure, if there was a ton of parity among the Pac-12 QB, being (at best) middle-of-the-pack might be acceptable, but when the conference is so top heavy with the likes of Barkley, Luck, Thomas, and dare I say Price, it really exposes the huge gap between Maynard and them. If Maynard was a freshman, he might end up being Pac-12 quality because there may still be room to grow, but the dude is going into his final year of eligibility. I think it's safe to say what we've seen from Maynard this far is probably what we'll be seeing next year. Serviceable as a stop-gap, sure, but not a longterm solution.

Maynard would probably be pretty good for a mid-major, and I agree he's D1 (albeit not in a BCS conference), but to say he's Pac-12 quality is a joke unless you hold the standards of Pac-12 QBs to be pretty low.

How bizarre is it that you never see a head coach smiling after a loss or a QB lauging after getting smoked - but somehow Cal manages to do it.

Sort of like I have never seen "illegal formation" on a field goal or multiple rolled snaps to a quarterback or a head coach who doesn't understand clock management- a lot of unique things about a Tedford-coached team...

Although the game with Texas was treated as a jihad on this board, bowl games are essentially exhibition games. For the players it's a reward and the dynamic is different than the regular season much as we would like to think it is not. Maynard's behavior can only be understood in the context of what was said to him that made him smile. If it was "man, at least you're still alive" I could understand the smiles.
