I don't think anyone is trashing Maynard. We just want to know what is going on, and SOME people (not everyone) are speculating it might be academics.

Not sure why the powers that be would be immersed in a cover up. What is to gain in not making this public if it's true. I've been critical of Maynard at times, but he's always seemed like a pretty good kid. If true it would certainly make for some interesting dynamics next year.

It seems pretty clearly to NOT be an academic issues, as the rules applying to that would NOT give a 4 game suspension. It would just be get your house in order by the summer / fall and you are good to go.<br /><br />If it is an injury, that is one thing. If it is another eligibility issue - like, for example, something did not work on the transfer, an NCAA issue, then that is something else. But academics does not work this way - a 4 game suspension in 9 months? Ridiculous. Particularly since Cal is underway with it's new semester before then.

So it sounds like it's academic. This makes more sense than injury as calling it exactly at 4 games doesn't make much sense.<br /><br />Time to put in the Bridgman!!!

Bummed on Maynard not cutting it in the class room... He let down the whole Cal Family with this one. Hopefully he can pull through and evade suspension.

I found the "old" rule (6 units) on the current NCAA site. I wonder why they haven't put up the new rule.<br /><br />With that said, it seems a little odd. Why a 4 game suspension? I thought these things were either you were academically eligible or you weren't.

Are they talking semester units? They should parenthetically state the units for quarters. And for summers. I can see a student turning around a getting the solid 19 units but not with full participation in Spring ball. And as a coach I can tell you players who will be missing game(s) are sent to the scout squad so their team mates will be readied for the games.

In doing so, I was commenting that Cal does not offer many classes which are traditionally considered easy should a student find themselves needing to take 12 units in the spring and 7 in the summer to make up for some perceived shortfall with existing course load. I have no idea why 19 units is some magic number to be achieved for that matter. I have no ill will towards Maynard and I hope he succeeds both academically and athletically at Cal. Under Armour All-American Game, so that means it's time to go position-by-position and look at the top performers from each team.<br /><br />Here we take a look at Team White (Blur), which features excellent talent on the defensive line and some risers at wide receiver, offensive line and running back.

<br /><br /> Quarterback<br /><br /><b>1- Zach Kline, Ramon Valleyne, Danville (Calf.) San </b><br /><br /><b>Kline, a Cal commit, has been by far the top quarterback on either team during the first three practice sessions. We feel like he has the strongest arm, the most compact release and continues to fit the ball well into tight spaces. On Tuesday, he showed the ability to keep a play alive with his feet, making an accurate throw rolling right to the sidelines. Kline is a quarterback that doesn't have to have his feet set and balanced up perfectly to make throws. </b><br /><br /><br />2- Tanner Mangum, Eagle (Idaho)<br /><br />Mangum has looked best in the intermediate passing game. He changes ball speeds well and does a good job of picking up blitzes and finding hot routes. The BYU commit does not spin the ball as well as the other quarterbacks on his team, but still has a high skill level in other areas. <br /><br /><br />3- Jameis Winston, Hueytown (Ala.)<br /><br />While we expect him to be much better in a game setting than a practice setting, the Florida State commit has struggled with consistency all three days. He's been erratic in the passing game and this setting does not lend itself to him making big plays with his feet<br /><br /><br /><b>While Winston was balls out in the game...both CAL and FSU have future star QB's in their future.<br /><br /><br />I'm loving all the BE...OTCHes (USC, Oregon, Washington, UCLA even ASU) bitching about CAL being a team with no future.<br /><br />CAL is a good QB away from being a contender and a Great QB away from winning a BCS game.<br /><br />Beginning in 2013 ... CAL's "D" will outscore some PAC 10 teams "O".<br /><br />It may take a year or two...but CAL will be waxing USC and Oregon... and the rest of the PAC.</b>
