510, I really don't think it's 100% on JT & Sandy, nor is it 100% on TL.

JT was ultimately responsible for a policy that offered no additional compensation for great recruiting. That's on JT.

With JT taking TL's recruiting for granted, and with TL being under-compensated relative to his value in the recruiting process, TL was willing to take a 2nd look when UW offered the big bucks.

I don't fault TL for accepting the 1st offer from UW.

From there, TL messed up horrifically -- going back on his word to JT.

Then he used a Cal visit to recruit for UW, and wooed Shaq to UW -- apparently before notifying JT that he'd accepted UW's counter-offer. That's double inexcusable.

TL had a lot of options on how to play this, and chose badly. Very badly.

So much of what made TL effective at Cal was that he was so passionate about his own experience at Cal. I think he's torched his credibility. Badly. Parents who used to believe him can't be so sure now.

SO - Before we got LOIs from Treggs (yah!), Ford, and Lawler, I thought we had an excellent class, especially when you consider the timing of all the TL bidnis. Even though some services had us ranked down in the 30-40th range, it's an amazing accomplishment, IMO, that JT and the entire staff responded as well as they did, and kept the young men that decided to stay -- despite the tumult.

Adding Treggs, Ford, and Lawler makes this a phenomenal class. I'm also excited about the new coaches, and anxious to see how the team does this fall.

My compliments to JT and the staff for an unbelievably positive LOI day -- far beyond the expectations of many.

I just hope that the lessons have been learned. Recognize and reward excellence. And when you make that counter-offer before the other team makes their first offer, you can get by with a lot less.
