Having gone to Cal
3. Living in the Bay Area
4. Establishing a Big name in Football but no experience or interest in coaching.

The thing i like about this criteria is that it should be easy to fill coaching vacancies.

The really great thing about this criteria is that when we do hire a coach we can count on loyalty from the person.

Just thought of a guy who fills 3 of the 4 categories and also has experience as an actual coach

Tosh Lupoi! Oh wait!

Jerry Rice is a longshot, but he has long worked with young WRs (Cal receivers used to train with him when he was on the Niners, he worked with Desean Jackson before the draft) and he is a big name that any recruit would love to learn from.

As far as the guys being Cal alums, I think that goes a long way to making us better in recruiting, as Tosh demonstrated before he was lured away by a lot of money. It also adds stability to have guys with some loyalty to Cal, likely have family in the area, and guys that know what housing prices are like in the Bay Area and think it is worth it (versus a mansion in Alabama, say). I don't think it is a requirement by any means, but I think it is smart to include Cal alums on the search list and to consider some of the benefits they bring. I also like that we give our own opportunities to get into the business. Having lots of coaches in the business with Cal ties is a good thing. Makes it more attractive to play for Cal if you have in the back of your mind coaching as an option.

When it comes to a job like OC, I just want the smartest guy we can find, no matter the school they are from (but a lot of smart guys do come from Cal).
