How is it feasible for Washington to pay so much for coaches?

Sark already makes a lot relative to other coaches and supposedly will be paying a lot to Wilcox, Lupoi, and Kiseau. How is it possible for them to pay their coaches so much? Does Washington cut the budget of other sports programs or shaft their educators and students. Something just doesn't seem right.

Also, UW is a public institution so will these numbers become public sooner or later?

on top of that they should be paying over $1M next year to the coaches they just laid off since they all had another year left on their contracts

The answers floating around are "P12 TV money" and/or "rich donors". No idea how credible either of those is. But it has to be coming from somewhere, and unless Sark just robbed a bank...

How much would you bet that recent donations to UW came from a wealthy Stanford graduate? Maybe one who has a grad degree or a kid at UW?

Yep.

1. They bring in way more revenue from football
2. That revenue supports ~ 9 fewer non-revenue sports
3. Duck Derangement Syndrome has made them desperate

Of course, when zero wasn't enough, they closed down the academic portion of their school since it wasn't being used anyway.

So why not steal some coaches from Oregon, why just us.

Oregon also has been conference champ three years running, so probably harder to pull assistants away. And Oregon has Nike money to keep assistants happy.

They are also getting a new stadium built but who knows how much of that is from private funds.

UW makes $9 million more a year in profit from their football team.

The UW Basketlball team is more profitable then the Cal Football team.

The UW also has a new stadium coming in 2013, that is privately financed and doesn't rely on the TV money as much as Cal's (The UW was required to present a proposal that would still pay for the stadium bonds even if attendance decreased to 50k).

UW averages on a bad year 5k more fans then Cal. On a good year it'd be 10k

UW is a more valuable sports property then Cal

UW grossing $8.5M more than SC from football? $12M more than Oregon the year they played for the NCG? Really?

The funny thing is that the state of Washington doesn't even have any state income tax. Just goes to show you the EPIC mismanagement of money by California and how Cal SUCKS DONKEY NUTS at grooming future donors. When I was at Cal the school did absolutely nothing to give me ANY reason whatsoever to even consider donating in the future; hell, it's almost like they went out of their way to make sure I wouldn't donate....

It's quite unfortunate that many of my fellow Cal alums are doing quite well but have been a bit jaded by their experiences too.

If we could, with all of the U.C. and C.S.U. schools getting an equal share of the pie, it would be chaos. Poor Oregon, whose total population is 1/2 of the Bay Area had it's major football programs languished until Uncle Phil started to pony up for the Ducks, and the Reser family upgraded O.S.U.'s facilities. The mangy Mutts and the Coogs don't have to worry about that, neither do the Sun Devils or the Wildcats. Besides that fact, UW has fewer sports to support, so they have a lot more money to throw around. It won't matter in the long run anyway. Sark (who was schooled by Carroll at $C) and the out of control Tyee Club, will get the Fuskies on probation again post haste. When that happens and Sarkisian is fired due to their delusional fan base, Benedict Lupoi will have nowhere to go - over priced for his position, and not enough success or experience to be a Head Coach somewhere. Best of luck to him.

RealDrew2;681450 said:

So why not steal some coaches from Oregon, why just us.

Cal is a threat to UW and its attempts to recruit in NorCal. Tosh Lupoi and his ability to sell Cal were UW's biggest obstacles, not only in recruiting but positioning in the Pac12 north. They hurt a rival and improve their recruiting in one scoop. I have no idea why UW goes after Kleisau other than to go after Payton and Dozier.

This is a big blow to Cal, but not a fatal one, assuming the leadership had contingency plans in play. I have defended Tedford in the past, but he appears like a chump in all this. That may not be fair to him.

I have no doubt that Lupoi's reputation will recover. He will be able to spin that he received more duties with game planning. Lupoi is charismatic, does well wijth the parents, and families of recruits realize this is a business. They don't like it, but it is what it is. Lupoi will do just fine where ever he is, anyone thinking otherwise needs to take off the blue and gold shades. He is hard working, resourceful, and kids love him.

I hope Cal can get back in front of this. Or else all Tedford is doing is stocking the pantry for the next coach.

It's simple. They don't have as many non-revenue sports programs to fund. Cal effectively chose to continue funding its men's and women's gymnastics programs while UW chose to spend its money on grabbing a better football recruiter.

I've said this previously and people pooh-poohed the issue: football's need for more money will continue to grow and ultimately the other sports programs can not continue to to be welfare recipients from football's revenue stream.

They also get tuition waivers which do not count. For example, at Cal we have 850- student athletes. The athletic department pays tuition to the University for those students. That is counted against the Athletic Department budget. Total amount of that is close to $14 million per year. That is the big difference.

They also have a garbage dump and a big parking structure that they rent out to raise revenue for the athletic department.
