What was the breakdown of Harbaugh's pay relative to his assistants at Stanford? He's a guy who always seems to have a solid staff around him wherever he's at.

I can't bear to read all the threads on this awful news. I'm sick at heart. But look guys, time to face reality with California. Used to be a high quality of life- no longer. What we get for our money (taxes) is damn little. Our state government is broken and has been for years. Cal will continue to suffer from this fact unless we the people vote differently and insist on change that will grow the economy, and bring business here. Right now its fleeing- even technology companies are out of here asap. <br /><br />I can well imagine trying to contemplate a future with a low salary living in this area. What would they do- live in Richmond, Hercules, Tracy or Livermore. Commute two hours each way? <br /><br />Until we fix the underlying problems, our university will suffer. And we better face the facts that high taxes, high cost of living, crumbling roadways, and crappy public schools is not a high quality of life. <br /><br />We also have to start asking why Cal is always at the bottom of the UC heap in terms of available cash. Do you know that our budget per square foot for maintenance is the lower in the UC system? <br /><br />The only answer in the short term is private money. The tactics of Sandy with baseball, gymnastics, rugby et al have not endeared her to those that would give. We've got to step up and contribute if we want to keep talent. I think Stanfraud comparison is not good- suspect that assistants there have other amenities to make it feasible including on campus housing. Would be good to know. Maybe this crisis will help the Cal faithful wake up and realize that if we want top notch program, it costs.

the harder question: to what degree attendance affects the salaries. 5k more people at the Presbyterian game covers what, two-thirds of Tosh's raise?

because schools with deeper wallets have fans who go to games to support the home team, not worry about the opponent.<br /> I used a small example-now, multiply 7 homes games(or 6) X 10,000 more per game-and this is an even playing field for assistants?

Really, there's no one to blame but yourselves.<br />Your stadium holds 71K. You average about 36K.<br />If you sold out your stadium, you'd have an additional $10.45 million (based on $300 season ticket package) per year to spend on coaches or whatever your heart desired.<br /><br />I know I'll get vilified for this post, but it is a cold hard fact. SEC teams pay their asst coaches more than any one else. They also sell out their stadiums every game. Support your team and maybe your talent won't bail on you everytime a raise in salary comes along.

The $$ is not the issue and JT and SB are lying through their teeth about it knowing that several of us are gullible enough to believe it. This is all on Sandy. She doesn't have any problems asking fans to pony up but she balks when it's her turn. She's a fundraiser and nothing more. I want an AD at Cal who is willing to go to war for the football program. Is that too much to ask?
