I know we are all upset by what we perceive as poaching by UW and perhaps some less than ethical behavior by one of our previously favored sons, but we should show some class regarding UW as an academic institution. I have seen several derogatory references to UW as a "second-rate" school in the myriad of threads regarding Lupoi-gate. UW is an excellent school and the actions of the football team does not change that. For your reference I present the Academic Ranking of World Universities - a ranking that we Cal Alums often point to as one of the better ranking systems out there:

<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp
http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br />
Take note that UW is ranked the 16th best university in the WORLD and the 4th best public university in the United States.

2 Tiers - what would those be, the top 5 schools in the world for tier 1 and the top 6 - 15 for tier 2? When people put down schools like UW it makes me think of Stanford grads putting down Cal. It just makes you like like a snob or insecure, or both.

And honestly dude, I have learned quite a bit in the business world over the years about ethics and handling crisis. The last thing you want to do is publicly bash your opponents. It makes you look petty and weak. We want our recruits to see Cal as a strong institution that can weather any storm - and in the grand scheme of things losing a few position coaches is not a major storm. There is nothing we can do to change what has happened except take the high road and improve our coaching staff.

UW is a good university - one of 10-15 interchangeable public schools where one can get a great education IMO, if that is one's desire.

It is also one of these schools like USC (though obviously UW was never as bad as USC) that were not always that great and have made serious strides in rather recently (30 years)... so when you get into the older alumni, there's no guarantee they aren't brain dead.

So obviously there is enough variance from person to person that you can't reasonably assume someone from a higher rated school A is better than someone from UW (or any other of the top public schools) like you can usually do for someone form, say, ASU. But huskies are so isolated up there in the NW many do have a strange sense of self importance that should be taken down a peg.

UW is one of the top 10-15 or so schools in the entire Pacific Northwest...cut 'em some slack. It will be interesting seeing Tosh trying to sell that program both academically and athletically as he did with Cal. There WAS love, passion and sincerity...along with substance. I have seen several derogatory references to UW as a "second-rate" school in the myriad of threads regarding Lupoi-gate. UW is an excellent school and the actions of the football team does not change that. For your reference I present the Academic Ranking of World Universities - a ranking that we Cal Alums often point to as one of the better ranking systems out there:

<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp
http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br"" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://www.arwu.org/ARWU2010.jsp<br />
Take note that UW is ranked the 16th best university in the WORLD and the 4th best public university in the United States.

Us News and World Report has UW ranked at #42. That sounds about right. If you can't get into one of the top 41, it is a good fallback school.

Go ahead and bash away. In the end, this is nothing more than a bunch of people arguing on the internets. I myself am a former SF resident and I always kinda liked Cal, and Berkeley. Our schools were never really that huge of rivals, but now with the formation of the North division and this episode to fan the flames, this is shaping up to be quite the entertaining rivalry that's taking shape. I personally am looking forward to another 20+ year long winning streak against you guys. <img src="<img src="<img src="<img src="" />" />" />">

I honestly don't know where Cal is ranked there and don't care as that ranking has zero credibility in my mind.

Lower than I would rank us, but not egregiously low (I'd put us around #10).

Sorry, but having spent over 20 years in Seattle, I am totally unimpressed with the education and work ethic of the majority of UW grads.
Take a look at Dawgman and you'll easily see the level of communication skills of Mutt fans.
The majority could not get through bone-head English.

Their written and oral communication skills are sadly lacking.
Their analytic skills are minimal.

UW is what it is but isn't close to the level of Cal on any basis.

After Washington beat us in football one year in the late 80s, I remember a Washington student actually tried to taunt us by saying "you berkely pussies study too fucking much."

That quote says everything I need to hear about Udub.

If you believe UW is the 16th best school in the world (based on those rankings), you are delusional.

As for most subjective rankings (in schools, in sports, etc.), only the top spots are really valid. Most can agree what the Top 5 schools are in the US. Order might be a little different and maybe 1 or 2 schools are switched out.

Grad schools are even more consolidated.

Once you get to discussing what the 30th or 40th best school is, then you're getting a lot of variability and differences in opinion since it's subjective (even if some variables are quantifiable).

Cal is much better than UW in academic reputation. That point is not debatable. It's not being a snob to state that fact.

UW is not that great of a school, but not laughable either. They are known for their excellent medical school mostly. It's in the top quartile of large state research universities and probably middle of the pack in the Pac-10. 16th best university in the world IS laughable. We don't get many UW grads down this way so I have yet to meet any professionally, which is odd in itself given how many other quality schools are represented at my employer (which employs lots of engineering and science PhDs.) I imagine they all stay in the Pac NW.
