Evidently UW grads don't leave the NW where it's considered a "great" school. I too have never worked with a U Dub grad.

top tier universities --- it's an "OK" school, not "lame ass", but by no means "special"

Still (to play devil's advocate), how many non-Cal affiliated and non-academic people (e.g. laypeople) in the Bay Area (or CA) consider Cal to be a great school either? The only state/public school (and non-service academy) that probably gets that kind of recognition from its residents is Texas (and having recently lived in Texas I can tell you that many Texans do have a high esteem for UT academically, not just for football/sports).

I may be wrong but I think that it has more to do with Texa$$'s sense of superiority and ego more than anything else.

OskiMD;684602 said:

Cal is obviously one of the top universities in the world, most likely top 10 globally. Most CA residents know that Cal is 2nd only to Stanford in academic rep (in CA). Cal Tech is great, but too focused in one area. Analogous to a MIT versus Harvard debate.

More importantly, OUTSIDE OF CA AND THE US, Berkeley (b/c that's what people refer to us as) is well known and thought of. That's not true of UT and certainly not UW. It's not being snobby, it's just fact.

I myself am a former SF resident and I always kinda liked Cal, and Berkeley. Our schools were never really that huge of rivals, but now with the formation of the North division and this episode to fan the flames, this is shaping up to be quite the entertaining rivalry that's taking shape. How many UC campuses have professors who won Nobel prizes for the work they did while at the school? Including UCSF it's SIX (Cal, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, and UCSF) and a UCR alum won one, too. I think it's the fact that all the campuses are great that makes it hard for the layperson to differentiate. This is quite different from most state university systems where the flagship campus is far and away the best.

If one looks at the rankings, UW is actually considered better than Texas, which is surprising. One thing to consider is that Texas has a huge endowment. I have met more than a few grads from Texas who, granted, were among the best students Texas has to offer since they ended up getting grad degrees, but in my experience Texas grads can be smart and capable. I still haven't met a UW grad. I did work with someone from Seattle, but he went to Harvard. No, his last name was not Gates.

For fun, here is how the Pac-12 ranks in Nobel winners counting only those who were on the academic staff before or at the time of the award:

Stanford (39)
Cal (28)
UCLA (7)
Colorado (4)
Arizona (3)
ASU (2)
USC (1)
Utah (1)
OSU (0, but Linus Pauling did undergrad there)
Washington (0)
Oregon (0)
WSU (0)

Note:
Texas (1)

UW is an excellent school and the actions of the football team does not change that. It is a very good university but probably only 5, 6, 7, or 8 on the West Coast.
Whereas Cal is by some quality reporting agencies 1, 2 or 3 in the World.
(except for that rag USNWR).

It is fair to boast about this when talking to recruits and their families. It is a selling point. Tell me that stanfurd is not touting its academic reputation when talking to recruits. It is a much of a selling point as the facilities or the weather or the surrounding environment.
