If you are a Washington fan, I have a simple message for you.

I might be furious at the way Lupoi betrayed Cal. I might be disappointed in Tedford. (But hey, I give a HUGE, full-throated shout-out of support for all Cal recruits who come here--may they all succeed hugely as Cal students and athletes.)

But...to any of you Washington fans...

There is no way--never, ever--that I can look at Washington, without being revolted. This is not college football, it's just money, betrayal and the triumph of unethical behavior.

If Cal taught me one thing, ANYTHING, it was that there are things bigger than your college degree, or your money, or your salary. There is who you are as a person, your soul. Whether you are liberal, conservative, whatever, people at Cal know that there are themes in life bigger than just us.

So--no way, ever, would I want to "win" by engaging in this level of betrayal and probably tortious or unethical behavior.

And btw, Washington football fan--"congratulations"--Washington may now be hip-deep in claims and lawsuits, an ESPN "funfest" of scandal-reporting into future years, and a have a football team that will be rooted against in ways you haven't even realized yet.

I will never say Cal is perfect, or that I don't have my doubts and disappointments, but hey--there is a certain threshold of decency for which yes, I am very, very proud of Cal.
