The nerve! Doesn't he know he's being an uptight and paranoid control freak??? How dare Oregon be so standoffish with its fans! http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2012/03/oregon_ducks_to_close_spring_f.html

Oh the nerve! With only two BCS appearances and a Rose Bowl win in three seasons as a HC, who does he think he is!!

So if you win, closed practices are good, but if you are 7-5, then closed practices are bad.

Whatever.

and you get blown out by all the good teams a lot of what you do is bad. If you keep winning the league and going to the Rose Bowl and/or BCS bowls then a lot of what you do is good. Seems pretty simple to me.

I agree with this statement. Just don't necessarily agree that JT having closed practices has the impact some may feel it does in leading to that 7-5 record. FAr more important factors are at play.

Yup, cheating works.

add to the perception that Tedford is tight and coaches tight and that makes his players play tight. Chip Kelly can be accused of many things but being tight and having a tight team isn't one of them.

It's a fallacious argument. There is not even a correlation, let alone causation. Tedford has not had the success we'd all like, and certainly not the success of Chip Kelly. But, as the sane among us have been arguing for years, things like closed practices has NOTHING to do with it.

"If we zip up and close these suits, no one will know that we're really bears!"

I wholeheartedly disagree friend Poops. I believe what 82BigDaddy posits is a valid intangible one becomes aware of with experience of observing those things that you believe flow from visible causation and see correlation by holding up to the light. I believeTedford's recent downward lack of success, in small part, (as we apparently share definition of) is directly reflective of the closed practices and the lack of hoped for success. His coach drills are repetitive and too general.....without specific purpose.....

Look for both "down the line screen" and halfback dive plays in the upcoming season.

Yes. It seemed for years there were certain posters certain that JT's closed practices were a primary reason for our on-field results - usually backed up by some successful program who had open practices -as if THAT was the reason we weren't as succesful.

Well Harbaugh began closing practices at Stanford, I believe Kiffin has closed / limited access to practices, and now Kelly.

Doesn't seem like any of those 3 coaches have lost control of their team or distanced themselves from their fan bases in a negative way as a result of changing practice access policies.

I think its good JT has closed practices.

I wouldnt want the secret to our eventual fake field goal to get out. He's been waitin 10 years for just the right time to unleash it...

you can rearrange these words to get the hidden meaning:

"whatever you do is good when you win and bad when you lose" (unless you're Tiger Woods or Joe Paterno)

Haha. Seriously though, I think this is the reason people complain about the closed practices. It just seems silly to have closed practices given the lack of creativity of our offense. I'm no X's and O's guy, but it just seems that everything we run is on tape, so what's the point? Oregon is on another level. They have those secret cards. They run an explosive offense based on misdirection. Ignoring the results on the field, you're comparing apples and oranges.

.....which begs the question....why after all these Tedford years does he close practices?......I'll venture a guess because I do not get to see Cal practice....close practices prevent anyone from critizing the coaching anymore than one can from just watching the games...no?

to open or closed practices..other than say, personnel from week to week during the season - replacements - injuries that may need to be "disguised" from opponents. Washington ran a pass play against us this year for a touchdown that was in fact "a secret" play..One of the main reasons coaches close practices is simple - distractions. USC is a perfect example and even though we don't have Snoop and a gaggle or professional agents roaming our practice sidelines, having no distractions can be considered a big plus to a coaching staff. It has little to do with Oregon's playbook vs Cal's..Oregon's formations/deceptions/misdirections are all quantities known..their execution, quickness, and effectives has nothing to do with closed or open practices.

Tedford's offense is very creative. Anyone who remembers the old days should think so.

He's just had poor recruiting at the QB, OL, TE and WR position lately. Personnel dictates scheme. Let's see what he can do with better players.
Beardog26

Tough to argue with this, and IMO it, along with certain other factors, have far more to do with our run of medicore season records than does the coach insisting on holding closed practices.

The need to have the stars aligned (in having the 'right' players) to be relevant signifies an average coach.

JT's closed practices are not even in the slightest, teeniest way related to his team's performance. It's nothing but a very small number of people with nothing better to do whining because they can't have their way.

If people want to say whatever about JT's actual coaching, as in wins and losses, have at it. The closed practices/ "I don't like what he says in press conferences"/ Twitter conspiracy theories whining is pathetic and lame.

Will you guys knock it off on the closed practices. It's fairly well known that a reporter or someone posing as one blogged or took extensive notes on what plays the offense was running. Other teams might already know the general scheme of things but no one sane just lets the details out of the bag or left unprotected.

Ok I fess up, here is my intimate knowledge of the situation. Isi is not our secret weapon, I am. My code name is Rudy, coach promised to unleash my 5.3 speed (aka golden flash) in 'crucial games' (tier 2 classification. aka. Rose Bowl 2020) and to terrorize unsuspecting secondaries with crack back blocks (aka snooze time).

Closed practices, removing the stats off the scoreboard, never faking anything all speak to Tedford's mindset. These actions, in and of themselves, don't cause the bad play (ie. losses) but Tedford's mindset surely does.

If you guys don't get this then you've never played for or coached with a guy who has a stick up his butt. I have done both and it impacts the team.

No offense, but your team probably blew goats if it couldn't handle an uptight coach.

I always get a laugh at how much whining occurs on these boards over the closed practices. It has been going on with so many sports for so many years - at Cal and elsewhere. Many posters act as if this is the reason football has been down the last few years or that it proves it's a sign of something crumbling The reality is more schools than you'd like to admit close practices. Get over it.

but we weren't as good as we could be, just like Cal football. Uptight coaches usually cover a lot of detail and so their teams aren't horrible. It's just that in big games, against good teams they play tight. Sound familiar? Hey, it's not a scientific fact, there are exceptions, but in general that's how it works. Some coaches figure it out. I do hope Tedford does.

You are wrong bonehead....oh so very wrong.....hey, bub, you've never seen a practice so you absoutely have no basis or the teeniest bit of information to support your very weak stance......
