This is a real problem...

"Even to this old conservative, the fees now charged are obscene. No one can do it on their own, as many of us did (being totally self-supporting) by working during the school year and full-time in the summer."

No one can do it on their own. Previous generations subsidized you and me. Now, we say to the young: "Screw you! You're on your own." Don't be surprised when at some point in the future these generations gut programs for seniors, saying: "Screw you! You're on your own." It will be no more than we deserve...

The young generation is also getting royally screwed on Social Security as well. It's going be completely dry by 2036 they estimate now.

Currently with an 18% youth unemployment and lowest labor force participation ever recorded (59%), it's not like many will be paying into the system anyways. :facepalm

I went to a community college my first two years and then to Cal for three years, getting my BS in '57 and MS in '58 (Mechanical Engineering). The "Incidental Fee' (what they called tuition in those days) was $40 per semester my first year and went up $5 per semester each subsequent year. It was announced during my last semester that it was going to go up to $60 per semester in '59. I remember thinking, "I'm glad I'm out of here. Who could afford $60"?

Books were about $45 a semester and my room and board was $900 a year. (I lived in "White Manor," which along with its sister house "White Shingles" was located where Etcheverry Hall is now.) The Athletic Card, which got you in to any game on campus in any sport cost $10 a year.

$100/quarter fall, winter, spring and $80 for the summer quarter. I started at Cal in the summer to save myself $20.

1992-1995: Tuition and fees ~$4000/yr. And since I couldn't establish residency (international student), add another $12K-$14K per year

Yep...That sounds about what everybody from the late 80s to now is reporting for In-State costs sans textbooks, supplies, health insurance, food, housing, membership dues and student tickets...What a shame.

I wonder what out of state tuition & costs look like these days.

I graduated in the fall of 1985 and I believe the final semester had increased from something like $700 to $900. That was all tuition and fees. Books and living expenses were, of course, extra.

When I started in 2006, was $3800 a semester, the fall semester after I graduated (Spring 2010), it became $5500.

77-81 - I think fees were 212.50 or so per quarter.
The $50 RSF fee didn't start until 82 or 83. I know that I voted for it with the knowledge I would not have to pay the extra money for RSF construction.
1 BDR apt at durant near Berkeley High was $180 a month - and rent controlled.

and Talking Heads and Greg Kihn Band played for free on lower sproul.

This is what I remember. My parents paid a little over $4k per year when I attended from '96 to '00. The rise in tuition since I graduated has been ridiculous.

I think totalt costs ended up being around $14k when taking into account room and board. Rents always felt high, hard to come by and of very crappy quality.

1 year I shared a 1 bed with 2 other guys where 1 guy got the room, 1 guy had the living room and the last guy slept on the coach. Rent was cheap but, man, those were some cramped times!

$212.50/quarter in 1974, think it was $262.50 when I got out of grad school in 1979. Someone else mentioned it, additional $50 added for the RSF.

Undergrad 1975-1981 = $212.50 / quarter
Boalt Hall 1981-1984 = $600 per semester
Fall sports pass = something like $30
Memories = priceless

I am trying with humble contributions to pay back such a wonderful education, good times and boundless opportunities.

You have your check stub? I also found mine and how about cashing $5 a week checks to eat for a week? God bless Co-op, saltine crackers, hot dogs, and mac/cheese.

Nope - in 1983 it was about 625 per semester and in 87 it had grown to $850 per semester. The dorm in 83 was 2650 for a triple in Putnam. After than, rented a house in Oakland with 3 or 4 other guys for $900 a month.

GoBears - I completely agree. It is absurd to spent so much on people (like me) who are no longer productive. I am 67, and all I do is raise my two kids (20 and 13), and read and putter around. Anyone my age or less than 85 lived through times of unpresendented prosperity - if they didn't do well it is their own damn fault.
Why should I have such fantastic heathcare when children, who are our future, struggle? Nobody has ever called me a bleeding heart liberal, but this just doesn't make sense as a society.

It was about $3700 a semester when I started, and $4500 when I left. Fortunately, I was able to find some pretty well paid jobs on campus to pay for tuition and rent, but at the current rate of $7000+ I doubt I would have been able to pay it all myself without taking out student loans.

Southseas: I was there in the late 70's as well, and that is exactly the number I recall paying every quarter. (We were on the quarter system then.)

Come Back Inn was also THE PLACE to go on Thursday and Friday nights. Particularly Thursday nights.

I was there from fall 75 (I think it was 212.50/qtr) to Jun 79 (pretty sure it was 242.50). But can't be positive in my old age.

I'm guessing during your time and mine we were in quarters. i think 1969-73..approx $150/QTR..so $89/qtr could be right.

was there 1967 to 1974. quarter system just started 1966-67. 1967 was $73 a quarter and then chapter 6030 changed the fee schedule from incidental fee to registration fee in 1968 so fees went to $100. a quarter in 1969. then by 1973 -1974 it was 212. a qtr. 1994 a professional fee was added to the professional schools of $10,000. now it is 10,000 a year. this is in addition to the regular student fees. i would still be paying off my tuition if it were todays fees. glad my kids all got through college earlier than now.

I also was 1975-1980 ( took 2 qtrs. off ) that sounds right. I think I spent more on Beer than tuition... Also worked at the then Super 7 Gas station for min. wage on College and Alcatraz. Right acrosss the street from the Massage place and that huge liquor store. (College Ave. Liquor ) )

I started in Fall of 1959. Tuition was $64 a semester, and for 10 bucks more, you could buy an athletic privilege card, which got you in free to all the home basketball games, and all the home football games for the year, except the Big Game, which was $5 extra, I think.

Life was good.

In my freshman year of 1965-66 the tuition was $125/semester. The next year Cal switched to a quarter system.

Cal keeps blaming reduction in state funding for its vastly higher tuition today, but that is only part of the story. Another important factor is that Cal had a much smaller bureaucracy in those days--and big bureaucracies are not cheap.

I didn't have to pay anything...5 years, totally free...Maybe that is why I didn't get an actual diploma...just herpes.

IIRC, $166.50 per quarter in '70.

Then $212.50 per quarter in '74.

First job out of college paid $750/month.
