I don't know about either side's chances since it's a road game from CMS.

I may have to side with the Blue team just because of Avery Sebastian.

Can all of you who are going please give some love to Avery for what he did for us during the Tosh coupe de gras?

Bouza , bostock , hagan and Wark all have three years along with bridgeford in tbe offense, Maynard only has Harris with less than a year of playbook experience and if Steve Williams shuts down Harris where does he go? Richard Rodgers (our next Cal All American in my opinion) is playing with a sling on .... plus Hagan has a cast , so there might not be much from the TEs in the passing game on either side, I just don't think Blues have the weapons ... Especially with no Keenen

It did a quick breakdown by position - not worth it to post it here, but it's going to be an interesting game I think. You can get a real sense of how thin we are at certain positions without the new recruits and the injuries, with WR, TE and DB being clearly the thinest positions. The guys who are playing are going to be gassed I'm sure, especially the DB's. The gold team looks especially thin in the defensive backfield.

Bridgford and Kline on Gold.

Maynard, Hinder and Boehm on Blue.

Will Maynard be playing? If so, could this mean that Kline has moved ahead of Hinder and Boehm as the #3 guy?

If Maynard plays, then we see who comes in first for him and, especially if that guy plays more than the third Blue, do we have a 1-5 pecking order (at least de facto)?

And then -- and I hate to even bring this up -- does that #5 guy maybe want to go elsewhere to get playing time?

It's illogical to pick either side because we have no previous data.

I noticed the Blue/Gold roster has several names that are not on the official Spring roster at calbears.com:
26 Ikem Okwudiafor DB 6-00 192 SO* HS Hayward CA Mission San Jose HS
32 Jose Contreras WR 5-10 175 SO JC San Leandro CA San Leandro HS/Laney Col.
33 Tanner Mohr FB 6-00 235 JR* HS Davis CA Davis HS
83 Idarre Coles WR 6-00 165 SO* HS Visalia CA Redwood HS
85 James Grisom WR 5-11 173 SO* HS Lynwood CA Lynwood HS

*Has used up a redshirt season prior to 2012
I've never heard of any of them. Are these just warm body walk-ons?

Also I noticed David Aknin #32 is listed on the Spring roster at calbears.com but he's not on the Blue/Gold roster. Does anyone know if he's gone?

In one of the videos of jt being interviewed released this week, there was a #32 walking past in the background. White stocky kid, pretty sure it was him. Don't know why he's not on the blue/gold roster though.

I think some or all are track guys who came out late, Okwudiafor, for sure, a speedy hurdler.

Here's the story on Idarre Coles WR #83. I should know (he's my son). Yes, he is a walk-on. He's a red-shirt soph. He was on the CAL track team (Decathlete). Final year stats coming out of high school for track were:
100m (10.83), LJ (22' 0"), TJ (47' 0"), HJ (6' 9"), Member of 4X100Relay Team, State Qualifier (3 years). His Senior year CA State pre-season rankings were #2 in High Jump and Triple Jump. As a member of CAL track team (after he was converted to a Decathlete), he was injured (PCL tear) during his freshman indoor season, and redshirted his outdoor season. He did qualify and competed in the USATF Junior Nationals (Unattached) Decathlon in Oregon (2011) 6th place (while suffering another injury/strained index finger[shot put injury] 2 weeks prior to the Jr Nationals). All this in his first year as a Decathlete and coming off (2) injuries. He is tough and a fighter.

When he was a junior (16yrs old) his football combine stats stats were: 4.41 40yd (hand timed, on artificial turf with football cleats), Broad Jump 10ft 0", Vertical 30".

*COS skills camp Article:
College of the Sequoias coaches Tony Perry and Curtis Allen hosted a skills camp at the Mineral King Bowl in Visalia. Many of Central California's top young prospects competed.

Tony Perry sent 19 players to D1 schools while the defensive back coach at Fresno (Calif.) Edison. Last season, his first at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, seven of his defensive backs signed with four-year colleges, including four with FBS. He is widely respected by D1 college coaches as one of the top defensive back gurus in the nation.

On the offensive side of the ball, Redwood had two receivers who blazed by the competition in drills and 1-on-1's. Ranger receiver Idarre Coles may be the sleeper in the 2010 class. The 5-foot-11, 155-pounder ran a 4.41 forty, the fastest time of the camp. Despite playing receiver on Saturday and starting at free safety last year for Redwood, his future could be at corner.

The reason he left track to compete for a spot on the CAL Bears Football roster, was because even though he loves track and field, his heart has always been in football. He loves CAL Berkely and he loves the football team.
Almost 30 days ago he made a big decision to leave track and participate in the walk-on tryouts. For him to even be there this Sat was a huge accomplishment for him. Even though he didn't play, he knows that he has his foot in the door and is going to go all out and work hard to earn a spot on the roster this season, if not, then next season. He knows that he has to pay his dues, and is willing to make the sacrifice.

Even though he is my son, I know the odds are stacked against him, but he's a fighter, a winner, and always achieves his goals. Plus, he's an athlete and he can only get bigger, faster, and stronger. Go Bears.

Ha, sorry for the "warm body" comment, everyone has a story! But yeah it looks like an uphill climb. Looking at the roster, it seemed to me that until the touted freshmen WRs arrive in Fall, they were going to be short on WRs for Spring practice, hence my warm body comment. But it sounds like Idarre is a fighter, so good luck!

Great stuff here, great achievements. Welcome. The track&field experience produces winners, which is probably one reason these guys can be invited to get out there and play. Unlike the so-called team sports, the T&F experience is more individual, where it is you versus yourself and the world, so it requires calming the nerves, dealing with the butterflies, control, discipline, all the while knowing it truly is up to you, nobody else, you have to perform or you fall flat on your face. Football has that, too, but just sayin', you are by yourself on the track or in the pit. At the highest levels, like USATF Junior Olympic nationals, you are in front of a large crowd and you are nervous, sleepless, dealing with anxiety, what to eat, drink, what time is it?!- after sitting around waiting for your event, etc., producing mental toughness and a learned ability to deal with nerves and turn on performance when you have to. [Okwudiafor, Langford both recognized T&F names around here locally by the way, with more on the roster also (sorry leaving people out).... -T&F is a great crossover.]

None taken on the warm body comment...ha ha. He knows that he came in at the right opportunity. At the tryouts he was given a choice to work out in the skills position and then they assigned him to the WR's group. I think that DB would be his ideal position, but for now he's willing to put in the hard work and dedication for the team. For now, he'll be content to play on special teams, if given the chance. He knows that no matter what, there are many variables when making the roster i.e. skill, speed, size, knowledge(playbook), injuries, academics and the unknown(heart). GO BEARS!

BTW great videos on the CAL scrimmage, and the pics of the SAHPC.
