I've never heard of any of them. Are these just warm body walk-ons?
Also I noticed David Aknin #32 is listed on the Spring roster at calbears.com but he's not on the Blue/Gold roster. Does anyone know if he's gone?
Here's the story on Idarre Coles WR #83. I should know (he's my son). Yes, he is a walk-on. He's a red-shirt soph. He was on the CAL track team (Decathlete). Final year stats coming out of high school for track were:
100m (10.83), LJ (22' 0"), TJ (47' 0"), HJ (6' 9"), Member of 4X100Relay Team, State Qualifier (3 years). His Senior year CA State pre-season rankings were #2 in High Jump and Triple Jump. As a member of CAL track team (after he was converted to a Decathlete), he was injured (PCL tear) during his freshman indoor season, and redshirted his outdoor season. He did qualify and competed in the USATF Junior Nationals (Unattached) Decathlon in Oregon (2011) 6th place (while suffering another injury/strained index finger[shot put injury] 2 weeks prior to the Jr Nationals). All this in his first year as a Decathlete and coming off (2) injuries. He is tough and a fighter.
When he was a junior (16yrs old) his football combine stats stats were: 4.41 40yd (hand timed, on artificial turf with football cleats), Broad Jump 10ft 0", Vertical 30".
*COS skills camp Article:
College of the Sequoias coaches Tony Perry and Curtis Allen hosted a skills camp at the Mineral King Bowl in Visalia. Many of Central California's top young prospects competed.
Tony Perry sent 19 players to D1 schools while the defensive back coach at Fresno (Calif.) Edison. Last season, his first at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, seven of his defensive backs signed with four-year colleges, including four with FBS. He is widely respected by D1 college coaches as one of the top defensive back gurus in the nation.
On the offensive side of the ball, Redwood had two receivers who blazed by the competition in drills and 1-on-1's. Ranger receiver Idarre Coles may be the sleeper in the 2010 class. The 5-foot-11, 155-pounder ran a 4.41 forty, the fastest time of the camp. Despite playing receiver on Saturday and starting at free safety last year for Redwood, his future could be at corner.
The reason he left track to compete for a spot on the CAL Bears Football roster, was because even though he loves track and field, his heart has always been in football. He loves CAL Berkely and he loves the football team.
Almost 30 days ago he made a big decision to leave track and participate in the walk-on tryouts. For him to even be there this Sat was a huge accomplishment for him. Even though he didn't play, he knows that he has his foot in the door and is going to go all out and work hard to earn a spot on the roster this season, if not, then next season. He knows that he has to pay his dues, and is willing to make the sacrifice.
Even though he is my son, I know the odds are stacked against him, but he's a fighter, a winner, and always achieves his goals. Plus, he's an athlete and he can only get bigger, faster, and stronger. Go Bears.
