Web Camera?

Anyone know what's going on with the webcam? The last update was on June 6. Seem like now is a particularly inappropriate time to shut the thing down, with excitement building over the upcoming stadium re-opening, and with a lot of visible activity going on in the bowl of the stadium. ESP chairs are being installed, benches are going in, the field is being prepared or installation of the turf, etc. Seems like the AD is losing a good marketing tool with the camera down.

i know that feel. I wouldn't mind if I was at home and I could just drive over to the stadium myself, but I'm doing a 2 month internship in Washington DC and this has just been killing me

Yeah, it has been down more than a week and was clunky for several weeks before that. I don't understand the lack of priority.

I don't remember these types of lapses when the furd were building their stadium. Just say'n..................

This must be the highly reliable source for the recent article in the Chronicle that stated that the stadium won't be ready in time for the season opener.

I've been personally monitoring this site and there has been no progress at all on the stadium since June 6th. At the rate of progress I've observed over the past week, it does not look to me that much is getting done - the same seats are still there, nothing new added.

Maybe the season opener really is in jeopardy ...

Stopped by the stadium on Wednesday . I could see that the camera power cord was in place, but didn't see any video cable (not sure if the camera is wireless). Spoke with a construction guy about 10 feet from the camera and he said that a number of tech types were examining the camera in the days prior.
He said it may have been damaged/temporarily disconnected while the trailers were removed this week.
Sent an email to the "Gold Standard" folks to try to get an answer to this burning question. No response yet.

Just a guess, but I've been wondering if the camera was mounted on one of the office trailers and, now that they have been removed, perhaps the camera hasn't been repositioned. Hopefully it will be, and soon.

Agree it is a most inappropriate time to be out of commission. I've been checking it out every morning, without fail, since it went up. Perhaps an email to the right person in Sandy's office could get it going again...whoever that person is.

who is the Assistant AD / Facilities Management as well as to Bob Milano, Jr. and I suggested that the webcam status be posted on the CalBears website. No reply yet

Gold Standard response @5:31

Hi

Just got word from our media team.

'We discovered the problem a couple of days ago and are trying to determine the source of the outage. We've determined it is not power which was the issue before so it may be the camera itself. We hope to have it solved very soon.'

Hope that helps! That is our link to seeing what the newest updates are with the stadium as well (when we are not up there looking every week or so) so we hope it is back up live soon too!

Go Bears!

Tina

I received a reply from Mike Huff today with copies to Bob Milano Jr, Herb Benenson, and Dan Williams that stated: "Thank you for the notice on the Stadium construction webcam problem. I will forward the information to our project team. Have a wonderful day!" Hopefully, it will be back in operation soon.

The fact that webcam has been out of service for 8 days now indicates that it's not nearly as important to the athletic department as it is to many of us.

I am going to visit my son in the summer sessions this weekend, so will stop by and personally scout out the stadium. Maybe I'll post a few fotos.

Maybe their priorities are different than ours...yes, I'm sure of it. This is pretty far down the totem pole, especially this late in the year. They are working on it supposedly, just not fast enough for some.

Yeah, I've enjoyed checking the webcam almost daily, especially after the bench and chair installation and final field preparation began. It just provides visual confirmation that we really going to play a football game in CMS on September 1!

Darn I wish they would get that camera fixed. I want to see how the stadium is doing. It was getting very interesting, then ,boom, it was stuck on June 6.

Glad to hear I was not the only person to check the picture everyday - my wife thought I was crazy! I can't wait to see what's happened the last week or so.

From the latest Construction Update of June 13th, "The project web cam was mounted on the temporary trailers that were moved off the job site in early June. The camera is being reinstalled and should be broadcasting again soon."

So, thanks for the update - I appreciate you are in touch with the powers to be - but what a cock-up by the Cal administration.

No one paying attention the the web cam and then little ability to get it on line after moving the trailers............ Sheesh, more like the gang than couldn't shoot. Trying to sell tickets and introducing their Gold Standard - what does all this mean? This is classic neglect - IMO.

+1. It shouldn't take a couple of weeks to re-mount a camera.

The camera was remounted onto the south stanchion for the Cal banner on or before June 6, with a power cord attached.

The June 6/7 pictures were taken from a position well above the trailers, which are staged and ready to be moved.

The issue seems to be a malfunction of the camera or a transmission problem starting on the afternoon of June 7.

Interesting. You'd think they could have diagnosed and fixed the problem in the intervening 10 days.

Progress! There is now a note on the webcam page:

Quote:

NOTE: The Memorial Stadium webcam is temporarily offline due to technical difficulties. Thank you for your patience as we work to have it restored.

One of my law school professors once went on a rant in class about how he hated it when people thanked him for his patience...he always wanted to yell, "But I'm not being patient!" And trust me, he wasn't.

Oh well...I'm trying to keep my eye on the big picture here, even if we can't see it for the time being. The stadium renovation is happening, and I can't wait for September 1.

Seriously...It's really not that difficult to keep a webcam operational.

I'll personally go there with a Go Pro Hero HD 2 and walk around there every morning and post up daily videos for Cal sports. It will actually look much better than the live web cam. All I ask is to be paid in Top Dogs (plus flight, accommodation and a little stipend to cover by sabbatical from work).

It would be fascinating to watch a time-lapse sequence of the webcam, given that it has been mounted in the same location and aim direction for many months. One frame per day, using the standard zoom-out view. It would certainly be best to do some sort of brightness & contrast normalization, as the weather and season affects the image so much.

I am too unskilled/ill-equipped/unleisured/lazy to take on that task. If no one in the athletic department is doing it, or paying for that service, perhaps a BI volunteer could take it on. Or maybe it's already been done and I am anti-boothed.

I was sort of expecting the school to put something together, but with how they've bungled it, it won't look right with 2+ weeks of progress not saved...

The camera has been out of service for 2 weeks now. Absolutely pathetic! Hard to believe that this is such a mind-boggling problem to solve. More likely is the reality that the athletic department just doesn't give a damn.

I'm serious they could have just deputized one of perhaps thousands of willing Cal alums, some of whom probably have professional equipment, to set up a cam or video the progress, while they are down. Yes, doesn't seem much hope for a HD sparkling video of a construction time lapse. Another lost chance for good stuff to be shown, by Cal athletics marketing. All this stuff counts for your image. And our image on this matter has taken a beating for years now.

Agreed, Hey Cal marketing/PR peeps (and I know for a fact that you read this) seriously, get this ish together. Must we always be playing catch-up?
