I hesitate to bring up this shooting... Hopefully people will be able to NOT politicize the topic.

Anyway, this USA Today article about the shooter says he went to "a University of California" school for undergrad, before moving to Colorado to pursue his PhD.

Please let him not be a Cal grad.

UC Riverside I believe.

Had he gone to the Univesity of California, it would have come out right away. Chances are if the reports said he went to "a" UC then it wouldn't have been Cal (or maybe even UCLA).

UCR from SD. Went to Westview High

Won't lie and say I am not tempted to "politicize" this... but this could have been prevented/limited to a certain degree.

My condolences to the families

Since you brought it up....what could have been done?

And that's why we tack on the "Berkeley."

Yeah, it's great to say we went to the "University of California."

But most people don't connect that to our campus. They connect it to the entire UC system.

I bet if someone in the theater has a conceal carry permit and was strapped....

ah I won't even go there.

I'm not even a conservative, never shot a gun either, but it does make you wonder. You look at the all the smuggling from Mexico and how well the war on drugs is going, and is it even possible to stop the flow of guns to the US, which are then sold illegally. And of course, you have to look at how guns get to the rest of the world - and most are made right here.

Now on another political note, I'm really thinking the suspect will be diagnosed with a severe mental condition... which says to me we should spend more money on helping those with mental issues. I dunno.

No matter what comes out about the reasons, it's a terrible day for a lot of families.

his second amendment rights were not violated, so that's a relief to all right? So, we are good, we can skip political discussion...

Not sure if that would have made a difference in this case:

"Chief Dan Oates said the suspect wore a gas mask, a ballistic helmet and vest as well as leg, groin and throat protectors."

Im waiting for more information as to where he got the ASSAULT rifles (which apparently are legal for anyone to purchase in Colorado).

Coincidence that the NRA is lobbying it up (hiring more lobbyist) today? They did the same after Columbine.

Here's an interesting account of what happened, relayed by the brother of the only identified (so far) fatality -- a sports journalist named Jessica Ghawi.

I wonder if a concealed weapon could work amid all the chaos and tear gas.

Naive. Bad guys are going to get evil looking guns regardless of bans

Could have worked, but the guy was wearing armor. If the smoke was bad, coulda made things worse

Just learned that one of the 12 reported fatalities was a 4-month-old baby. How tragic. The bastard who committed this heinous act should be executed today!

Money and drugs generally flow here, guns go the other way. Lots of ignorance in this thread, and its not even to pg 2

Absolutely tragic. You know, I'm really glad that the President and Romney both said that today is not a day for politics - but CNN is already trying the "we'll have this debate in the coming days" BS. I'm left of center; never have fired a gun and don't plan to. I have no clue how things like this can be stopped. If some nut is hellbent on doing something like this, he's probably going to succeed, unfortunately.

A) I did said that the US probably supplies most of the worlds guns

and

B) if the US bans the sale of guns or even the manufacturing, is there any doubt that they will flow back in through some underground channel?

Please explain what you think an assault rifle is.

I think you would be shocked if you learned what the difference between rifles in California and Colorado were.

Yes, this should be good. I remember a pundit who, in the wake of some other tragedy, talking about banning all those dastardly assault weapons that can fire a bullet every time you pull the trigger. I have a Davis P380 that only fires about 60% of the time I pull the trigger, and all I want to use that POS for is as a drag anchor.

The US does not even supply the US Military's guns.

Most of our small arms systems are made by Belgium, Italy, and Germany.

Even our beloved M-4 and M-16A4's are often actually made through license by companies overseas.

Even Springfield's HUGE seller "XD" line is manufactured in Croatia.

The US buys most guns; we produce very few, and the ones we do produce are only produced here because of strategic needs (ie, Beretta's plant in Maryland) related to national security and low production models.

There are VERY few American gun makers that make guns in the US now.

If we stopped producing guns entirely, there would not be a shortage of guns.

I wonder if the survivors at least got a free movie ticket out of it. The interesting part of the story was that many in the audience initially thought this was part of the show and didn't exit the building when the gunman fired at the ceiling. Amazing.

CA state senator Leland Yee, who is running for mayor of SF, waited ten hours before using the tragedy to trumpet gun control and aid his political campaign. :bigpuke:

Stop the flow of guns to the US? My impression is the flow mostly runs out. Plenty of domestic firepower available here, so no need to import heat.

I shot chickadees at the town dump with a .22 when I was 12 -- poor tiny things just disappeared in a cloud of feathers. I found that the act of murder, even of a lowly 3-inch long bird, was deeply revolting. Haven't touched a gun since, and don't understand those who love them. I guess they make up for some guys' perceived inadequacies as a man. The fact that they are so easily available to any nut is a major argument for control.

A lot of people say that, if we can keep our guns, there can never be a dictatorship in America. That's laughable, as most Americans are spoiled, gutless cowards who would roll over in fear and present ther butts to be ravaged by any aggressor. There will be a dictatorship here in the future, and the gun nuts will welcome it. Of course, once it is established, it will take their guns away. And that will be the one good thing about it.

Oh lawdy. :rollinglaugh:

Best joke in the entire thread.

My take. I was a concealed carry permittee (so was my wife) in Texas for over a decade (as soon as they passed the law after the Luby's shooting). I carried without a problem every time our family went out together for an outing, including to the movies. Now that I am back in California getting a permit is nearly impossible but I respect the will of the California voters, maybe someday. I am an ex-Army MP and I hit what I shoot at, although hitting a moving target is very difficult, even something as large as a person. Current doctrine is a double tap, two to the body, and if the shooter doesn't go down (body armor / PCP, etc), then to the head. I can tell you if I was in that theater, especially with my family, I'd have got him or died trying.

Didn't be use an AK? I really don't understand how people can defend the sale of military style assault rifles.

A. Louis Gohmert went there for you. Yes, that would work well. Everyone would have known WHO to shoot and been capable of taking them down in a dark theater panic.

B. Flow of guns TO the US??? Any idea where they are made and/or who owns the companies? One hint - here.
