Cal and Arizona go undefeated in the regular season this year (just play along). They face each other in the Pac-12 Championship game. Winner goes on to play in the National Championship Game....loser plays in the Rose Bowl.

Would you want Cal to lose the game?

The question as I see it is not "Would you want Cal to lose the NC to make a Rose Bowl?" Why would a Cal fan ever want Cal to lose?

The question is "Which game is more important to you?"

It is extremely important that Cal return to a Rose Bowl and I would take more satisfaction in that than playing in the NC. If Cal won 50 NC's and never played in the Rose Bowl again I would not be satisfied with that.

This is exactly the situation a +1 avoids. You win the Pac-12 Championship, you ALWAYS play in the Rose Bowl with a shot at being invited to the National Championship game if you win.

Or, have a +2 where the Rose Bowl winner is always one of the 4.
