Did I miss something about Keni Kaufusi?

In the CC Times Tedford is quoted:

Eventually, Tedford believes the Bears will be solid at the three D-line spots. "I feel good about our top seven we're two-deep plus one," he said.

The candiates for those spots include Kendrick Payne, Aaron Tipoti, Viliami Moala, Deandre Coleman, Mustafa Jalil, Todd Barr and Gabe King.

Coming out of spring Kaufusi was listed as second team DE. What did I miss?

7 guys at DL is not good. Don't we have 7 QBs?!!

I recall hearing that he was injured, but I don't remember where that was.

I think you are mistaken about 7 DL's deep not being good. We only have 8 OL in the rotation to cover 5 spots.

who is the ex-baseball player. That makes 6 QBs. That makes it better. 6 for 1 position, 7 for 3. But I understand QB is much harder physically than DL so we need the bodies there.

Edit:
Oh, we have 7:

14 Brendan Keeney QB 6-04 220 FR HS CA Granite Bay, Granite Bay HS
8 Zach Kline QB 6-02 200 FR HS CA Danville, San Ramon Valley HS
22 Joey Mahalic QB 6-04 220 FR HS OR Portland, Wilson HS
6 Kyle Boehm QB 6-03 220 R.FR RS CA San Jose, Archbishop Mitty HS
7 Austin Hinder QB 6-04 200 SO SQ CO Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs HS
16 Allan Bridgford QB 6-03 220 JR 1L CA Mission Viejo, Mission Viejo HS
15 Zach Maynard QB 6-02 185 SR 1L NC Greensboro, Grimsley HS / SUNY Buffalo

Mahalic can't join the team until school starts.

Tedford also did not mention Puka Lopa and Antoine Davis who are listed on the DL. Also Austin Clark is injured, but I thought he is planning to be back at some point this year?

I just noticed we have 5 long snappers on the team! Must be an injury prone position. :p

Curious what he means by "eventually". I hope it's sometime in this decade.

But enough off topic in this thread. 7 DL is a solid two deep with an extra body. Once players like Kafusi heal up there should be enough depth.
82gradDLSdad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't mean to derail my own thread with a depth comparison between DL and QB. I don't remember him getting hurt and I was hoping he was still on the team and still in the mix to play. He seems like a good player ready to come into his own.

DL is the very least of our worries.

We will be able to get pressure.

Especially with Brennan Scarlett as our Predator.
McCain too.

Oh and Whiteside as the backup.

Injury news this season seems to be a quick reference from JT to someone is a little banged up and then moving onto the next topic. It's very easy to miss that, especially with someone like KK that hasn't made a lot of noise and it's on the edge of the 2-deeps.

we hold because of injuries on the DL. I know now is the time for conservative practicing but it does not bode well for our DL depth. Although nothing we can do about this now. I hope the injured guys come back to full strength soon. The lines are always the most important part of the football team.

Any position group that has 3-4 players out for one reason or another is going to have issues. A prime example of this is the WR corps in 2004, take out the two deeps and all of a sudden you're relying on a true frosh Robert Jordan instead of G.Mac and Lyman.

You missed the fact that the list was not a quote from Tedford, it was the writer's list. It also said that the candidates for those 7 spots INCLUDE those 7 guys, but that doesn't mean that any other name is EXCLUDED.

Now that we can watch the videos of Tedford's post-practice interviews every day, it cracks me up to see how people react to and parse his words as quoted by writers. They often miss his tone or misquote him. They'll often list a few guys and then Tedford will say, "Yeah, they're all in the mix there," and then the reporter reports that list, and everyone freaks out when someone is not in it.

Cut out the middle man and watch the videos for yourself. I bet this time, like many others, you'd come away with a different reaction than you did here.

Banged up was the report, not a long term injury. Like I said, that's as specific as it gets and I don't recall which day it was.

At least let him get through one recruiting cycle.

Howard was at UCLA from 2006 to 2010. Even if you want to assume that a position coach is the sole recruiter for his position (which would be dumb because initially coaches cover a geographic area), his signees at UCLA include:

2006: Did not join until February 2006. We'll ignore.
2007: 5* Brian Price (maybe you've heard of him?), 4* Akeem Ayers, 3* Justin Edison
2008: 4* Datone Jones, 4* Damien Holmes,
2009: 4* Keenan Graham, 3* Iuta Tepa
2010: 5* Owamagbe Odighizuwa, 4* Cashius Marsh, 3* Sealii Epenesa, 3* Wesley Flowers, 3* Derrick Bryant
2011: (Howard did not leave until after signing day 2011). Three more 3*.

That is Two 5*, Five 4*, Eight 3*. Over the same time, Cal had One 5*, Four 4*, Eight 3*, Two 2*.

If you include all positions in Howard's geographic location (L.A. City Section), you will see a wealth of talent across positions.

His unit also performed very well. UCLA had very good run defenses under him.

And rather significantly we were beaten out by Howard for Owa and Cassius Marsh while Tosh was recruiting them.

Now Marsh was flip-flopping all through the year but there are reports that Owa's spurning of us was definitely influenced by something Tosh did and not just because we got a commitment from Chris Martin.

Winning a head to head recruiting battle against Cal-Tosh is a good thing.

Probably like most Cal fans I did not realize how impressive Howard's recruiting has been at UCLA. Look forward to seeing what he can do at a major university :p. I hear this is not a good year for High School defensive linemen on the west coast but things can change dramatically from August to February. Let's get it on Cal.

Pet JT, he missed a lot of time in the weight room and has fallen behind. If Whiteside doesn't make progress, don't be surprised to see a blue shirt year. The dog house comments may be overblown, but I will leave it to those who have seen the practices to comment.

I only say doghouse b/c I've heard he's barely getting snaps in practice. This is a guy that played for a lot last year, forcing fumbles, showing potential. I do think eventually you will not be able to keep him off the field...assuming he continues to do all the right things.
