Have you noticed that the staff and football players seem to have Cal clothes that seem to be unavailable to the rest of us, unless I am looking in the wrong places. I brought my grandchildren up for campus visits a couple of weeks ago and went into the student store (both men's and women's) and literally had to ask if they had any sweatshirts or tee shirts that had "California" or "Cal" or even "California football" in blue and gold or grey and blue. No, there were many, many "Berkeley" tees and sweats to the exclusion of Cal stuff.

Sorry, I am an old-timer, and we fought UCLA over not having the UCB moniker. I love the academics, but associate with "Cal" and not "Berkeley". I know why "Berkeley" is popular, but we are, after all "the University of California". Period.

I refuse to wear any Cal paraphernalia that has Berkeley included in it. The town has done no favors for the school nor, have they been partners, the stadium retrofit being prime example #1.

Players and coaches will always have exclusivity to their uniforms and apparel. The Bearants if I recall also have a few items unique for them. It's whatever is negotiated with the licensed supplier, in this case Nike. I believe the student store is only carrying left-overs from the 2011-season. The new stuff (at least Nike) probably won't hit the shelves until Sat and more of it as the season gets going. I was there last week and the racks and walls have gaps, Gameday shirts are available though. Pretty vanilla.

All the cal clothes that I have that say "california football" were all team-issued. They definitely do have a huge stock of team and staff-only clothing that isn't available to the general public

Interesting that the student store doesn't have shirts that just say "california" i used to see a ton, especially with the Nike-exclusive section they have (unless things have changed since I left two years ago).

If anything, there are a ton of stores, like bear basics, bancroft clothing, etc. that sell a lot of Cal clothing

There was a Cal store at Bay St in Emeryville with tons of California stuff. Not sure if still there.

The problem with "University of Califonria" is that most people associate that with the UC system.

So technically that Colorado shooter is a University of California alum (Riverside) so is my little sister (Irvine).

The "Berkeley" word is what gives it/us prestige.

It's a local vs a global argument. Berkeley has cachet in the world outside of California. Cal, in state.

I'm with you. Screw the city of Berkeley; they have done Cal no favors over the years, and have gone out of their way to make life difficult for the campus. I wear lots of Cal apparel, but none of it says "Berkeley".

I'm wearing my Russell Athletic team issued shorts from circa 1998 right now. They say "Cal Football" on the left leg and "Hit Squad" on the right. My favorite (and most enduring) piece of Cal clothing.

I think you're looking in the wrong spot. I went to the student store the other day and there was tons of Cal and California branded clothing. If you come up the stairs from the women's/kid's section, it is sort of a u-turn to your right. Lots of Nike stuff, especially, none of which says Berkeley.

Also, yes, there is lots of team issued gear that is available only to the team and those close to it.
