Standing / Sitting

Fans entering Memorial Stadium are asked to enjoy the game from the comfort of the seat indicated on their ticket. Please keep in mind that when you stand, you block the view of others. We encourage fans to cheer, but continuous standing in the seating areas will not be tolerated. Standing or sitting in the aisles, on the ramps or in the stairways is not permitted. Standing on seat backs, standing on bleacher seats or stepping over/on seats is also prohibited. As a courtesy to fellow guests at Memorial Stadium, we ask that fans wait for a natural stop in the game before entering or exiting the seating sections.Strollers

Dislike. If it's such a big deal, I wish there was a "standing-friendly" section where you didn't have to worry about this.

Search here for the para titled "Standing". Followed by OD's accidental "Strollers" title inclusion:

Quote:

Strollers
Cal Athletics welcomes fans with strollers. However, their use should not (in any way) inhibit fan movement on the concourse or block any aisles. Smaller, collapsible strollers can be stored underneath a seat as long as they do not create an obstruction for other fans.

Plus plenty more snits and giggles (obviously written by lawyer-ly talent) in no particular order..

Quote:

Safety Warning
The nature of live sporting events presents the possibility that objects (footballs, playing equipment, etc) could enter the seating areas from the playing field. For the safety of every guest, all guests are asked to remain alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times (warm-ups and the course of the game) while visiting Memorial Stadium.

Quote:

Cal Kid's Huddle
Starting when gates open until the end of the 3rd quarter, all kids are invited to the Cal Kids Huddle, the brand new kids fun zone area! Located near the "kid friendly concessions" on the North Concourse, the Cal Kids Huddle offers inflatable games, trivia, face painting, pictures with life cutouts, dress like a Golden Bear try on station, coloring booth, and much more! Opens: 2 hours prior to kick off. Closes: End of 3rd quarter. Cost: Free admission for kids of all ages with valid game ticket. Location: North Concourse behind section XX.

Radios (AM-FM)
Only hand-held radios for personal use are allowed in the stadium as long as they do not distract from the enjoyment of other guests. The use of headphones is required.

Psuedo-random grabs from prohibited items..

Hand Cuffs
Derogatory, profane, scantily clad (DARN), or offensive clothing (See Dress Code)
Artificial noise making devices

Quote:

Football Return Policy
Footballs that enter the seating area must be returned to the field.

Quote:

Field Access
Fans are reminded that attempting to enter or access the playing field without the proper credential may be considered criminal trespassing and is grounds for immediate ejection and arrest.

Quote:

Bad Vibes
Negative thoughts of any kind will result in immediate ejection (what a bummer ma'an).

Quote:

Cell Phones
Cell phones are allowed inside Memorial Stadium as long as their use does not interfere with other guests' enjoyment of the game.

Child Locator Wristband
Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring their child to one of the guest services locations to receive a child locator wristband. The wristband will have the child's seat location as well as an emergency contact number in case the child is separated from the party.

BEST OF ALL..

There are seats in CMS where one can stand as often as they like without blocking anyone's view. I'm in such a spot, I'm happy to say...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitting_disability

A Sitting disability is a condition in which a person may not be able to sit....., It is also known as "reduced ability to sit", "sitting problems" or "inability to sit".

Sitting disability has generally been an unrecognized disability.[1] The term "sitting disability" is not a well known expression although it is a term used to describe notable symptoms for people with severe back pain.

So..... who here as a sitting disability?

My best friend has been permanently disabled and unable to work since the age of 29 due to the inability to sit without assistance or significant accommodations. I just can't sit at Cal games, so I'm much better off.

My pop is in his 70's and has back issues. It helps him a lot to stand at times; and he does so during much of game, when he can (like TV timeouts and halftime).

With these seats he can stand at his heart's content and not have to worry about blocking anyone's view of the game. I'll probably stand more too as well, just because I can, lol.

Does anyone know if this was in the policy before? I'm typically a stander and have gotten into a couple disagreements about standing before. I'd hate for them to be able to point at a specific rule.

Hopefully they only apply this to the ESPers.

If you all have not done so, google some of the relevant language here, and see what you get. It seems to be pretty standard, and with that, this might not be new for us...

In the past, when I didn't have seats where I could stand when I wanted, I was always very courteous to those behind me, and stood or partially stood, just enough to see for myself (others in front of me had stood).

Those who truly feel that standing is part of the game should try their best to get seats where others will not be impacted; or at least sit in a section where this would be seemingly less problematic...

Is this "rule" even new? Or has it been sitting there in fine print somewhere where nobody noticed it?

If it's just for the ESP areas, I don't see why it's a huge deal....that's what they all want anyway.

Really? I have ESP and think the rule is stupid.

Curious how everyone wants stadium upgrades and donations but many are quick to disparage those that step up.
Cal89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I totally get the rationale for the rule. It is about common courtesy and respect for others.

There have been times when someone in front of me suddenly stood-up during a big play, and I missed what happened. I of course stood-up too, but often not quite quick enough. This is particularly so when using binoculars...

This is clearly understandable when the person in front of him did the same, but often that was not the case; the guy just stood-up, not out of need to get back a sight line, but just because...

Our society is based so much upon freedom, but to an extent, to where we don't negatively impact others.

I selected our seats with this in mind as I want my dad to stand all he wants (me too for that matter) and at the same time not compromise anyone else's enjoyment of the game; which I find to be very important.

I didn't mean it to be disparaging. If I did, I would have said "the rule is an outrage and we need to take it away and make all those old blue-haired idiots learn how to be real fans" or some such whatnot.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "all of them" want the rule. But it's probably safe to say more people in those sections do want it, because they're older and what not. And it's out of my respect for their contribution to Cal athletics that I think it's "not a big deal" to have a rule that accommodates their preferences.

I could be wrong in speculating that this is what most of them want. I don't sit there.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oh lord not this issue again. Standing during the entire game doesn't make you a "real fan". Going to games year in and year out despite the sometimes horrific level of play makes you a fan. The students stand during the game, but how many of them will continue attending games after they leave school? So are they "real fans" until the time that they aren't? And we've all seen attendance in the student section and the young alumni section (where I guess they do a lot of standing as well) wax and wane with the fortunes of the team. While attendance in the gold zone stays pretty consistent (where we don't stand all the time).

I stand when the circumstances provide. But my three knee operations don't really let me stand for the whole game. Not that I would be inclined to do it anyway.

I will put my Cal "real fan" bona fides up against anyone's (sitting or standing). The nerve of some of these "fans" who have shown up in the tedford era are getting annoying, and we'll see how many of them are in the stadium if god forbid the team were to record a couple of 5-7 seasons.

Go Bears!!
