I wonder then if he knows that all sunshine pumpers here can now be categorized as different classes of negabears?

If you are reading this coach Tedford...be wild and fun. Take chances and coach like it was your last year here. Make it a party! Play different players. Coach like the good ol' days and smile and laugh...

and you had his ear for 10 mins this week ? ... no smart answers seriously .. something simple.. ?

How I would like it to go:

"Coach, I hate to say it, but it looks like you no longer care or you're burned out or something."

"What makes you say that?"

"Your actions and expressions seem very matter of fact. You don't seem to have any life in you. If something good happens, you don't show excitement. If something bad happens, you don't show anger or disappointment."

"So what, even if it's true?"

"It has infected the players. Is that what you want?"

How it would actually go:

"Coach, I hate to say it, but it looks like you no longer care or you're burned out or something."

"Who are you?" (As he turns on his heel and walks away).

if you could all have a private chat with the coach. I have been fortunate enough. You wouldn't want to ask him about his "nut sack" or he would easily deck you..The man is human - he's doing what he thinks is right and it's not working. Ever happen to you and someone off the street or even the Bear Insider (which he could care less about) comes up with questions or suggestions about your job performance? As a teacher, parents are constantly filling my head with "suggestions" with my class, but have never stepped into my shoes, faced what I face. Me? "So Coach, tell me about that California Bowl victory when you were at Fresno State?"

Does he know it's not working? There's nothing that seems to indicate that he does. The first step in an "emperor's new clothes" situation is for the boy to jump from the sidewalk, pointing at the naked ruler. Plenty seem to be doing that, but I don't see the regonition.

Instead, he seems only to be circling the wagons. Is he getting counsel from anyone or is there too much pride?

I'd try to show kindly concern for him, as a person. And, to help him see the connection between his demeanor and a team full of 18 to 22 year olds. If you're going to be the stern taskmaster, you better make it pay off with wins for the kids to put up with it. They can only motivate themselves so much, despite what you may think they OUGHT to be able to do.

I don't and won't defend Tedford's recent lack of success, but having coached myself for 40 years, I think he probably "knows" what's going wrong, but we may only see a piece of that, and what he is trying to do about it. The doctor who f*cks up a medical procedure in the same way more than once, who is normally very successful, might find it too late to go back to medical school to correct his error or lack of knowledge..and might change careers, or get out of the profession altogether.
