From today's press conference. Turns out we were all wrong and that Maynard is doing great!

* * *

"Zach's done very well. He hasn't forced the ball."

"Last week's interception was a total fluke. You never see that happen on a wide screen. You're supposed to cut the (defensive) end. It's a blind throw, really, for the quarterback. The end didn't get cut. You never expect that. You're not reading the defensive end on a wide screen."

"For the most part, Zach has done a nice job of not forcing the football. Has made some plays with his legs. When he's got outside the pocket, he's been accurate with his throws. I think his managemenet of the game and protecting the ball has been good."

Maynard hasn't played up to his late 2011 season form, but he hasn't been bad. The misses to wide open TB and FB out of the backfield has got to stop.

The Maynard bashing is growing tiresome. This team's problems are not with Maynard. O-line and defense are the real issues.

Maybe Teddy's building up ZM's confidence for the OSU game so that he can point at that skinny arm again?

The receivers ran the wrong route clearly.

Actually it was the opposing defensive end that ran the wrong route. He wasn't suppose to be there according to Tedford.

Why is the QB never a problem in your opinion? You always blame the oline no matter what the performance.

Because I watch the games and can see where the problems are with this team. Oh, and I don't find every excuse to blame everything on Maynard....but that's just me.

That defensive end was supposed to be cut / blocked. Even the announcers commented like that interception catch was a fluke, most unlikely to be caught by such a huge defense player. I give credit to Maynard for tackling him and preventing a TD (not sure if that DE is fast enough).

Maynard is not perfect and he made a couple overthrows, but you can't blame it all on him. I agree that our defense unit is a problem, OL is questionable, and coaching has issues. But this is the team and the coaching staff we have until the rest of this season. You can keep bitching or you can get behind our team and root for them. I choose the later.

GO BEARS!

Yeah, he'll probably be on the Heisman watch list after the Ohio State game.

Yeah this is essentially what Tedford said, but its rather pathetic he is making excuses for Maynard's doo-doo.

Watching Palmer on the Raiders Monday and he had an easy swing throw to a wide open McFadden that he totally threw too low and had problems with other passes to the flat to backs. My point is even a past Heismann and pro bowl quarterback might have some flaws and it's just not that easy with all the moving parts sometimes.

So. The massive overthrow that cost us a td was the oline's fault? Underthrowing easy tds the oline's fault? Anything Maynard's fault in your opinion? I didn't see a qb running for his life. Did you?

Yes, you can blame him for the throws that didn't hit their targets....your problem is you can't give any credit for the passes he does make.

Again, if you look at the Nevada game or the S. Utah game, was it really Maynard that cost us the game (or kept it too close against S. Utah)? Did you even watch the defensive side of the ball? Did you not watch the O-line get manhandled against Nevada?

Maynard is completing 65% of his passes, averages nearly a first down every time he attempts a pass (not completes a pass, attempts a pass). His QB rating is ranked 35th in the nation. So no, on the whole, I don't think Maynard is the problem.

I do have serious concerns about this defense. Against weak competition, Cal is ranked 53rd in yards allowed per play and 67th in passing yards allowed per att. According to you, that would be Maynard's fault too, right?

This was the same frustrating pattern of Riley and Mansion. Couldn't consistently hit a
7-yard pass to a back---how in the world can this not be improved by decent coaching? High school QBs make this pass every week, time after time, for crying out loud. It truly defies logic.....

Can't hit a 7 yard pass, yet averages 9 yards per attempt. Hmmm.....

Do you hear yourself type? Kennan can't make plays unless the QB gets the ball to him.

Let me ask you straight up....is the bigger problem Maynard or the defense this season?

No he wasn't. Tyndall was supposed to have blocked him. That pick is why offensive lineman exist in the first place. The fact that we let a FCS level lineman into our backfield is issue #1 that this play revealed.

That people on here are equating that pick to Maynard's skill, or lack thereof, is ridiculous. Only superhuman reflexes would have prevented that.

His overthrow of Stephens was on him, not this pick.

His TD to Keenan hit him in stride on his drag route. Jus sayin'

Maynard is fine. The team needs work. Let's be honest, if all units performed as well as Maynard, we would be 2-0.

Remember the good times...when Kyle Boller threw the ball too hard for Division 1 receivers to catch yet lanky little high school kids pulled them down at will when he was in high school....

We will look back on this and laugh. Remember when Maynard repeatedly threw shitty passes his receivers damn near died to catch...wait remember when he was at Buffalo, oh yeah nobody does...ok, remember when he was throwing nerf footballs to KA in the living room...****, i dont know what my point is other than Maynard is shitty. Keep throwing up his stats but i choose to watch him play and see his emotions and reactions. A decent QB guves a **** and i dont see Maynard giving a **** about anything except his bicep. By the way, Cal Strength and Conditioning Staff do not approve of his biceps.

Clearly Bridge and ZM are not on the same swole plan.

There are 100 QBs in college that can simply get him the ball.

They both are terrible. Once again one unit sucking doesn't make Maynard a better QB.

I would say your anti-Maynard agenda has clouded your judgement, but I'm not convinced you ever had good judgement.

I won't reason with you (because you are unreasonable), but just take it as fact that Maynard has NOT been terrible. His numbers stack up with the top third of all QBs in college football. That is far from terrible.

Defense has been terrible. They were the reason we lost to Nevada and the reason we allowed S. Utah to stay in the game.

I agree with there being MUCH bigger issues than his numbers right now. But let's hold off on evaluating his stats till he's played more than a MWC team who just lost to USF at home, and some FCS team.

Oh c'mon, a competent QB would have either 1. not thrown the ball because there is a defender there, 2. attempted to pump fake, then pass, 3. or, side arm the throw.

Oh that's easy to say, harder to do? No actually it is easy to do, that's why embarrassing interceptions like that rarely happen!

That was purely a boneheaded decision to throw, and a terribly thrown ball because Maynard didn't lob the ball.

My goodness, that throw wasn't even made under pressure...I am almost afraid to think what Maynard will do this Saturday against OSU's D, because his flaws will only be magnified.

I agree....my point is the defense played the same team as Maynard did, yet their numbers are (relatively) far worse. Doesn't bode well for the rest of the schedule.
