I like the attitude! That said, I did NOT need to be reminded that Kevin Prince ran for 163 yards last year. SMH

Just sure tackling to bring him down right away, please. As soon as you try to "put a hurtin'" on a guy like that, you will wiff. Keep balanced, keep your feet under you and keep your eyes on his beltbuckle. Like a cutting horse, not a Brahma bull (see how easily the rodeo clowns evade him).

No. We need to hurt him every time he runs the ball or pretends to run the ball. That's how we slowed down Oregon.

I'll be surprised if Brax carries it more than 15 times this week. Depending on how effective and healthy Jordan Hall plays, it could easily come down to the 10-12 range. But I can understand a defense's intent to beat him up and wear him down. Hope it doesn't matter of course, but our backup (Guiton) is quite solid FWIW.

On the Kaepernick mention, Brax is probably close to twice as athletic as Kaepernick. Sounds like lofty bias, but I've seen both play plenty and I'm being honest.

You really would. It is so baffling. Are you telling me that our players are some of the most un-disciplined in all of football? Or is the preparation and coaching crappy leading up to these types of games. I can understand Kap with Nevada. But Kevin Prince?

He's made a monkey out of every player who ran at him full steam with the intention of puttin' a hurtin' on him. As did Prince. As did Kaepernick.

If the guys just play their responsibilities and keep their wits about them, he will shake and bake his way right into their arms. A few sure tackles will lead them to a different strategy. Or, to befuddlement.

I'm sorry, but you are honestly being absurd.

- Can he run two times faster?

- Can he jump twice as high?

- Can he lift twice as much weight?

No, no, and no.

I get you're saying he's "a lot" more athletic. You're going to have to come up with something more reasonable than "twice" though.

Look, I am sure he is going to kill us on Saturday unless he gets food poisoning before the game. But you just described someone out of a comic book, not a real human being.

LOL. I don't think you've seen Kaepernick play recently. He was doing things this pre-season that were pretty amazing (not to mention his run during the packers game). He was making plays this pre-season where he was rolling out on a dead sprint and throwing bullets across his body. Besides maybe RGIII and maybe Vick, I don't think there's any other QB's out there who have his combination of speed and arm strength (whether he can actually play the QB position is yet to be seen). If your QB can actually run and throw as well as Kaepernick, then congrats, you guys are going to be national champs this year.

I didn't like picking him in the 2nd round (thought it was way too high), but it looks like harbaugh is going to prove me wrong yet again. damn you harbaugh!

So true...Kap was amazing in the preseason. He was accurate both in the pocket and on the run. He was putting balls right on the numbers and of course can tuck the ball down and run for miles of yards...the dude is a baller.

avoid a hit right after he hands the ball off or pitches the ball. The problem comes when the outside backer tries to make a play on whoever he thinks (!) has the ball. I'm saying that some (most?) of the time the outside backer needs to go directly at the QB and hit him immediately after (or while) he hands the ball off or pitches the ball back. We hardly ever do this. I will agree that once the option QB keeps the ball he is usually hard to get a clean shot on (ie. these guys are usually pretty good at avoiding big hits when they are running with the ball).

PS. as my screen name suggests I've watched a fair amount of option football over the last 20 years. DLS runs the veer.

The thing with Kap though was his decision making and expert knowledge of the offense with 4 years of experience... Miller might be more athletic, but i'm thinking at this stage there is still some thinking/hesitation that will be the difference

Hit the qb every time he he leaves the pocket to throw, run and especially when he hands off or pitches.

Our d smothered Oregon when they played that game. And Ohio ain't no Oregon.

Hell, Tedford has IT, the formula for humiliating you BuckEyes

"It's just a matter of dealing with the game environment and being comfortable with what we're doing and being poised and focused. And not being too amped."

oh, is that all hey, no problem, Jeff

See ... all it takes is being comfortable with what we're doing (hmm ... still not apparent that guys know what they're supposed to be doing ... oh well)

and being poised and focused (oh oh)

and not being too amped (hey, we haven't shown much "amping" yet so no sweat on that)

Right, you just made a pithy meaningless comparison that has no actual basis in fact. Sorry for calling you out on that.

I think you're underestimating Kapernick, personally. Of course, Kap shredded us, and I expect we're likely going to get shredded on Saturday too.

C'mon elpbear, you're not listening Our friend from Indigenous Peoples, Ohio said "close to twice as athletic", not "twice.". So, perhaps assume 1.8x as your athleticism multiplier, but using 2x is obviously a bit silly.

The OLB ain't gettin' to the hand off point that quick. He's got to play contain until he's sure that the ball is handed off or not. And, he's got to TRUST in his teammates to make the tackle of the RB if it is handed off. He can't disrespect them that they can't by cracking down the line to make the play on the RB himself (before he is sure that the RB has the ball). This is what McCain got sucked into in the Nev game, first half, at least.

If the QB pulls the ball, then the OLB is in position to close on him and force the play. The Pistol rarely has a pitch man after the QB/RB exchange.

No worries mate. The majority of posters have been quite cool and some rather hilarious. We /boring/ Ohio types are much the same. A generally chill state overall...except when it comes to college football (mainly scUM).

Worth noting...Braxton has left a game early this year for cramping in his calves as well. Lost an entire quarter+ due to that!

Oregon at home = we ball up and either make it close or win.

Oregon away... right now... = we get smoked.

Heart currently says we make it a game tomorrow. Head currently says... nothing, because its not allowed tos peak until 1pm pacific or so tomorrow.

I agree with this but Cal seems short on badass mofos this season. Last truly menacing or psycho mofo was probably Mr. Pain Train. Cal has had some great all-round LBs like MikeMo and Mychael Kendricks and great DL since but no crazy man and in the 3-4, LBs are the attack dogs.

Anyone think Tedford/Pender will put a spy on Miller? If so, what young LB shows up big tomorrow?

Sadly, I don't think we will, although I think we should. Instead I expect we will require our LBs to be in position all of the time with sad consequences.

If I were to put in a spy (not that I know anything) I'd be intrigued by the combination of speed and size Scarlett has. He's very fast and big, at least twice as athletic as any other LB we have (see what I did there), and if anyone has a chance to spy on Miller it could be Scarlett. I seriously doubt we will find out though.
