I'm trying to get a quantifiable sense for where things stand with our fanbase now. If yes, you want Tedford back, can you please explain in a reply your rationale for wanting him back (and I'll reiterate, leave the $ out of it).

I'd also like to respectfully request that nobody on the "anti-tedford" side uses this thread to rebut the reasoning put forth by the "pro-tedford" crowd. If you want to state your case for having a new coach, please start a new thread to outline your position. I really want to enable the "pro-tedford" posters to make their case in clear view without this thread turning into a back and forth. Thank you!

I think it depends on what happens during the year. From the other poll this AM it looks like the fanbase would support him as long as he gets at least 5 wins ... 4 or less and there's going to be some real unhappy bears out there.

http://www.bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63578

As for me ... I could probably stomach a 4 win season depending on how we win and lose. I'd love to see what Tedford can do with Kline, Bigelow, Treggs, Harper, R. Rodgers, Cochran, etc in the next 2-3 years. But if we go 3-9 this year I'd start to get nervous about putting that talent in the hands of Tedford and would prefer we find someone else.

I'm still "optimistic" about this year though -- I think we can still pull together 5 or 6 wins (if that's optimistic) but it has to start this w/e vs. ASU and we need Galas and MSG back on the line ASAP.

I appreciate that other poll, but I'm trying to keep it simple, thumbs up or thumbs down. Let's get a tally of where things stand with the fanbase right now.

It might be better if you add a third option ... "check back with me at the end of the season".

I don't think it is possible for me to edit my poll to add an "undecided" category. There are 8 games to go, so some opinions are going to change based on what happens the rest of the season, but I'm trying to gauge where the fanbase stands right now.

Also, with 11 years of data to look at, it is hard to imagine there are a ton of undecided voters left on this subject.

Since I believe that, barring utter disaster (3-4 wins or less) the AD is likely to bring him back for at least one more year, to me this question pretty much boils down to: do you want a seriously losing season, or do you want Jeff Tedford? And I don't want an utterly crummy season- I think that would be much, much worse for us than one more year of JT. Next year, with all the facilities in place for the whole run of it, and one year closer to the end of his contract, firing him for continued mediocrity (5-7 wins, including a bowl) becomes much, much easier. The cash involved is less, and the economic argument about lost revenue will have sufficent data behind it to be compelling to the non athletic admin people who'll have to ok it.

He's mastered the art of "caring without caring" at this point.

Tedford is just living in trance now when it comes to his work. He's just getting by every day without really thinking about it, not really paying attention to details anymore. That's why he fails to see things that are very obvious to outsiders, like playing Bigelow more.

...90% of BI wants him gone. That is truly amazing and really captures the sentiment of the serious, if mentally crazed, Cal fan pretty good!

Wow, I guess this won't be seen around here any more....:tedford

Jury's still out as there are still lots of games to be played.

I had us losing to OSU and SC. Nevada was a trap game to me. I was underwhelmed without SUU performance.

Playing SC is tough and it's hard to gauge progress of our offense against a team that has so many weapons on defense.

I think we'll get a better picture the next few games.

Maybe Jeff Tedford is the great unifier! I can't imagine coming up with another subject where we could get to 85% agreement.

The one thing bad about this poll, you do not have an answer from the other 40-60 thousand fans that come to see the games, so it is not telling us very much about the majority of the fans feelings (i voted yes).

Top 25 recruiting classes
Recruits who choose the program because of his reputation for integrity
Getting players ready for the NFL
Clean program

It's worth noting that the recruiting classes have been improving lately, even with the Cal posting mediocre records. We all expect the next two years to be better than this year.

That can continue if Tedford has the support of a good fan base. The hostility and negativity drives some fans and recruits away.

We lose the recruiting momentum and many of the program's positives if we lose Tedford.

(I did vote yes. If I'd voted no I wouldn't have disrespected the OP with a post to this thread.)

I know many of these kids want to play in the NFL, but we are NOT the minor league for them. I don't care about that and it shouldn't even be part of any discussion. If he wants to point out to kids his success rate, great, but sorry I still harbor the sorry delusion about student athletes. Most of your other points are valid, but as far as recruiting we will be losing the battle to schools that are now improving (like ASU) if all we do is win 4-6 games the next 3 years.

I agree that the nature and disposition of the fan base is important. It's clear that the negativity from the fan base is getting into the heads of players whether it's "appropriate" or not for them to pay attention to such stuff it's human nature. If our players are aware, I imagine our recruits are as well.

Anyway -- I don't find this poll very helpful or compelling. There's a lot of football left to be played and from the other poll it's clear that opinions will change based on the W/L record for the record the remainder of the year. If we go 6-6 or even 5-7 then 91% won't agree on anything. This poll just confirms the other two polls ... most people expect us to win about 4 games this year and that won't satisfy most fans. If the team exceeds that expectation then opinions will change.

A change in administration is bound to cause us to lose recruits. At the same time, a new face with new energy and a different way of producing results can influence other recruits. I believe, above all else, kids commit based on what they see as playing time. That is, the better recruits react this way. UCLA just capitalized on a change in coaching, as an example. The Furd didn't do badly either.
