I think the riot gear deal was the 1999 BG, following Cal fans exercising their First Amendment rights in a rather emphatic manner on the field after Cal lost the 1997 BG.

I don't recall seeing much fruit being thrown when I was a student, but chances are I was drunk at the time.

I do recall the 1979 BG at the Farm, when Stanford had lacrosse players around the Stanford banned to catch the fruit and send it back into the Cal rooting section.

I did have to credit them for ingenuity at the time.

Good clean fun as pictured in the official 1972 Cal Pregame Program.

yes this was something close to what was going on next to me at a U$C game. It took a crew of about 6 guys to man it because others would brace and hold down the ones holding the sides and the one pulling on the center would also be pulled and held back by surrounding students. The frozen oranges were launched and easily made it to the west side corner where the U$C band was. Ahh the good old days...

Thank Oski someone still has a copy of that photo. I'm in that picture, and I'm not giving out any more details.

OldenBear,

Now I'm really happy to have posted this photo from the Big Game Pregame Program (handed out for free during BG Week).

I love this photo. Every single person in the picture is so happy. It shows why I have loved rooting for the Bears even in the down years. There are times when a powerful wave of happiness sweeps over the stadium which cannot be duplicated in any other place or event. Hope we have more of these moments this Saturday.

Yeah, it's one of my better memories at Cal (but certainly not the only ones). Enjoyable day, great weather, we may or may not have been winning (but didn't really care). I think at that point we're rooting on 'target closeness'. Almost nailed Woody Hayes at one game (oh, what a cheer). I agree, PRD, there's nothing like a great day at Memorial - and in the 40 years since, I've been to a lot of different college football stadia.

Let's see ...... early 70s ....... yeah, we were ...... 'happy' ...... I'll take it!

Thanks for the post.

I work with an ex-SC band member who mentioned to me that Cal always threw oranges.
