Hey Jeff, tell me what you see in Maynard

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I see:

Zero accuracy
A weak arm
No strength
Average speed
No ability to read a defense
Not particularly shifty
Cannot find the 2nd or 3rd receiver
Bad body language

I saw this last year. Are you seeing something different?

And how do you know the backups can't do better when you never play them?

Totally frustrated,

BTW, I'm canceling my season tickets if you're still around next year.

See ya later! Jeff isn't going anywhere! You guys are pathetic, you hate Maynard so much you will blame him for everything. He didn't lose this game. Blame for on the o-line.

A lot of us don't hate Maynard. He is what he is. Not a Div. 1 QB. Not his fault. We hate Tedford for playing him and not developing other qb's. I feel sorry for ZM because he is put in a situation that he can't win.

He obviously sees more in Maynard that he does in Bridgford. Then again, so do I and so do many other objective people.

I rate him as having above average speed/spunk when running for his life, and this is probably why he gets the nod--our O-line is so bad, we need someone with legs and the ability to throw on the run. I can't argue with your other points.

So you see Bridge as a huge pile of dookie?

Considering I have not seen a QB as wildly inaccurate as Maynard in my life, I find the idea that Cal has nobody better hard to believe. But I don't deny that there is an outside chance Maynard is Cal's best QB. But that would be some sort of historical precedent.

You have 4 highly recruited QBs, three of which were Elite 11.

All 4 were in spring ball.

It's hard to imagine that all 4 of them are worse than Maynard.

And if they are, then Tedford deserves to be fired.

Did you graduate in 02? Then you must not remember Ayoob. He was pretty bad, considering the stellar O line and backfield he had to work with.

Tedford either is putting a worse QB out on the field when the currently better one (NOT more talented, but better) is warming the benches, or he failed to develop the talent that is currently warming the benches.

The second possibility is more likely and, sadly, much worse for Tedford. It's why I want him fired.

Can't find your 2nd or 3rd receiver when you're getting sacked on your 1st read.

He's not a total stud but he's won us same games. He's not the best passer but he didn't really have much of a chance today.

Mayanrd's athleticism is severely overrated, and his fumble per carry ratio has to be one of the worst in college football.

This is the scary thing...if he sees Maynard as the best bet that means Bridgford and Hinder are questionable D-1 QBs also.

If Maynard is truly Cal's best QB, that just highlights how poorly this coaching staff has done in recruiting quarterbacks. Jeff Tedford is a quarterback guru no more.

I admit that he certainly had contributed to some losses rather single-handedly; today's loss, however, was not the case. I would place the blame entirely on JT and O & D lines.

A much better, and more delicate way to express Robocheme's anger. He is put in a situation he can't win, but I cannot envision him winning very often at the D1 level. ZM should not have been played for some time. We should have been developing some talent, and I would say any talent, other than ZM. There is NO upside with him, other than a positive guess about this year which goes unfulfilled 3 out of 4 weeks. Not too positive.

Again, like davetdds says, it's not Maynard's fault. He's trying to live the dream with his brother and can claim to be a starting QB for an BCS team.

For all the measurables of a QB, Maynard is average or below average. There is nothing he does particularly well, there is nothing in his physique that makes him naturally more talented. So why is he the starting QB? It's just mind boggling that Tedford has chosen to end his career on the shoulders of Zach Maynard.

Can't agree more. I am completely at a loss to understand why Zach Maynard is our starting QB. He appears to be a stick figure who has worked on his handoffs but not his reads or throwing accuracy. Enough of this lunacy. We need to bench Maynard and tell him he's not playing another game. I'd rather see Bridgford or Hinder for that matter.

:cry:ZM reminds one of Kevin Riley's travails. He had similar problems completing simple short passes tho he did seem to do a better job of reading defenses. Still folks called for a change b/c a Texan was highly recruited and was on the sidelines. KR did get injured and BM came in and it was readily apparent to all and sundry that greatness in hs doesn't translate to college. He was, to put it kindly, awful. Sadly, that may be the case with the 2qbs under ZM[don't waste ZK's redshirt on a lost season]. AB didn't exactly light it up against Nevada tho he was handicapped a bit by not being allowed to have reps with the 1st team-intentional? Still, one hasn't seen as mediocre a qb as ZM at Cal since the 60s. And yet he starts. So that does raise questions about why but mercifully, there are only 5 more games. Then, it will be on to the favourite Cal activity of 'wait til next year!', again.

Yes, the backup QBs may be worse than Maynard, but until we play them, we'll never know. At least, we'll give them some experience for next year.

Have you watched him sitting in the pocket waiting for Keenan to get open? That's why he can't find anyone else on the field.

Or there is another reason that ZM plays despite all his shortcomings having nothing to do with football but with recruiting him and others here. At least, that will be over with after this year. One can't really imagine worse qb play at this level, Oline problems notwithstanding.

Or Justin Vedder.

But unlike all those guys, who admittedly stunk it up for much of their time as Cal QBs, Maynard has character issues/flaws that make it more difficult for me to support or like him. The laughing on the sidelines after a terrible performance leading to Cal getting blown out, the biceps pointing after making some lame, routine completion, missing his tutoring sessions that led to his suspension, etc. Add to that the fact that he's barely community college material academically, and you get a complete package that drops him below guys like Riley, Vedder, and Ayoob in my and many others' opinions.

Yeah, the sad thing is that I wish we had Kevin Riley's level of play these days.

There's no mystery about what is happening with Maynard: he's a below-average Pac-12 QB who is simply overmatched against good defenses. Once in a while he'll pull a good effort out of his ass (like the Big Game last year) against one of these teams, but typically when he plays a good D the results are like this -- complete inability to do anything.
