24 years of following Cal football, not sure if I could be less interested right now

I mean even in the Holmoe years at least there was the Hit Squad and that provided some interest. The Nevada, ASU, $C and Furd games, were not only bad in terms of results, but they were just absolute bore-fests (unimaginative play calling, stop and starts due to penalties and reviews, lackluster and feckless play). Cal football is boring. JT is boring. It's as if he takes this game too seriously as if to preserve the soundness and integrity of the game. Forget that JT. Have some fun with it. You're on the verge of being fired. Watching Cal football is not fun. My uncle who is a Furd and who went to the Big Game said he was bored even in winning. I know the $C fans were super bored playing us. There was no reason to be worried or excited -- it wasn't like we were providing any kind of legitimate threat. I'll definitely wind up watching the Utah game, whether live or on DVR. But really, there is zero build up or anticipation. This is the state of the Cal football program. The thrill is gone.

I wouldn't say I'm bored, but I probably haven't clicked on 90% of the threads this week....of course, that'll change before and after we win/lose.

It's the way I feel, my wife feels, the friends I go to the games feel and it is the way an ex-player my son spoke with feels. Tedford is just same-old, same-old, by the book, day after day. My son's friend said it was like a business (and not in a good way) and it wasn't any fun. Now before everyone jumps on me and says football shouldn't be fun, I get that. But I think you know what this kid meant when he said this. It is a player's view of what KoreAm is saying.

Good observations, KoreAm.

I am bored also. Although we do have a united front (forthe most part ) in change, I just wrote how I am not renewing next year until I feel the experience may be better, and I feel they care about the fans andJT isgone. I e-mailed the Gold Standard athletics, they answered mea few monthsago saying they would get back to me but never did. Poor a$$ customer service

What?
You are not excited by the question of "will Bigelow finally get a carry here?" in every offensive play?

Sh*t happens. It is what it is. I don't like the current state of Cal football but I'm not a bandwagoner or fair weather fan so I'll continue to follow and go to Cal games.

The only caveat to this is I might not renew full season tix next year but instead eliminate the 2 games I always have to sell or give away any way.

I understand to a degree how people feel. You do what's best for yourself. I'm still showing up.

Tedford's brand of football is flat out terrible to watch... for either team.

The saddest part is how boring the team is to watch with as many playmakers as we have. Can you imagine if a team like Oregon State, Boise STate, San Jose state, Louisana Tech, etc. with talent like KA or Bigelow?

If I were living in the Bay Area, I would probably still show up as I love being in Berkeley period. But sitting in TT, getting baked by the sun for 4 hours, having to angle myself on the bench next to sweaty people so as not to touch too much, people trying to get through the row with literally nowhere for the mover or the sitter to go, at halftime seeing the aisle looking like it was just part of the student section merging to our section, walking towards concession and not making it back for the second half kickoff because things were so slow moving, was not exactly a fun experience apart from the game itself. Yah, I would still go but they should spread out the seats in the and consider ripping out a few of the bleachers to make it humane. Overall, notwithstanding the game, it was good to be back in Berkeley and the Bay Area, visiting friends and family, and enjoying the food (loved Comal and Cancun as well).

Yup a complete and utter waste. This program would have made Reggie Bush and Cam Newton sit for a few years until they mastered the playbook while the team suffered more losses.

I understand the distance thing. When I lived in SF I'd blow off game all the time or just not want to cross the bridge. Since I moved back to the East Bay it's quite easy, heck I can leave for the game 1/2 hr before start and make it. If I were dragging two kids and a wife from Sacto, I'd think long and hard about going every other week or so for a crappy product. However since I'm close I just go.

re: the bench seating...I think there's more room now. I think they added a few inches of room. Last season at CMS before the renovation in sections T and U I'd have a knee in my back the whole game, not the case any longer.
BearsLair72
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have to tell you that having sat over on the "other side" as I used to call it in UU, and seeing the NV game on the benches with backs and more room, I will not come to a game unless I get tickets over there on stub hub. I used to live what KAB described and I will no longer do it. In fact I think the whole renovation sucks because nothing changed for most of the fans. if Stanford can go down to 44k why should we stay up in the 60's? Wouldn't it have made sense to either put seats or the new bench backs in every reserved seat, save the end zones? I think far more people would show, even if the team stinks if it was a comfortable experience, instead it is torture for 3-4 hours and throw in the crazy times and days and a 100 mile drive to do it and forget it, I can watch on my TV if I ever get the Pac-12 Network.

Now...I'll tell you what this mediocrity has done to me. I would never miss a game on TV and always live and the rest of the humans that surround me be damned. This Saturday since I don't have the network I would have gone to a local sports bar and taped the Giants. Forget that, I'd rather watch the Giants live and look at the score occasionally on my smart phone...now that is a serious change brought about by Teddy and his boring, crummy teams.

The thought of returning to the renovated Memorial Stadium with expectation to improve from last year (returning senior QB, possibly improved O line, experienced secondary etc. ) really got me amped up for the season (I even donated for the tile wall) only to witness one of the most disappointing game versus Nevada. It pretty much went down hill from there, and decided not to return for the UCLA game, and missed the most exciting Cal game of the year.

I too, have lost some interest, but I think my loss of interest probably represents a defense mechanism from the unfulfilled expectations and disappointments more than anything else.

KAB, you sounded pretty excited before the Big Game fiasco, IIRC.

I think I will certainly follow next few games with lower expectations, probably like everyone else but still hoping for the best.

I was excited before the 115th Big Game. I thought the last two weeks v. UCLA and Wazzu represented a desperate but welcomed change in the playcalling and philosophy. Turned out people may have been right about UCLA that they pretty much handed the game to us (although we did look inspired) and that there was not much takeaway from a drubbing of a BDW. Yet I wanted to believe so bad. But no, uninspired, Peter Principle, fearful, boring, playcalling and gameplan, which came back entirely for The Big Game, has me now entirely disillusioned and resigned that Tedford will never change. The greater the stakes, the more he grips and clings onto the things that he is comfortable with. Yet these things have netted him mediocre to now downright failing results.

I think we're in for changes too and that makes it interesting.

I dot know if I agree. I was at CMS in 2010 when we shut down Oregon. Even though we lost I thought it was an exciting game.

Colorado and UW last year were exciting games.

tOSU this year was an exciting game.

I guess, for me, any close game is exciting. Any game where one team is totally outmatched can get boring. I was at Presby and SC last year which weren't terribly exciting (minus Biggie TD return).

I know what people are saying about the potential cataclysmic change that is at hand, but it's still hard to get too fired up about it at the moment because:

1) That $6.9M buyout is always there to possibly deter any movement (I understand that the resources are there but that does not mean it will necessarily be accessed);

2) Not sure who would be a successor and whether there are Harbaughs or other turnaround gurus are out there at this time;

3) Week to week the team's performance is hard to stomach and there is always the possibility or even probability that this is going to get worse before it gets better whether JT is fired after this season or not; and

4) the gap is getting greater between us and the elites of the Pac-12 (Oregon, Furd, $C and maybe for the time being, even Oregon State - I can't believe they are Top 10 with 2 star talent).

KAB, I agree with all of your points. All of us are tired of the uninspired product on the field and the poor results. As a Cal fan though, I can remember that not too long ago, we were in a very similiar position (at least performance wise) and the outlook for improvement was much more dark than it is now. If I'm being overly optimistic about an imminent improvement in our program if not an immediate turnaround, it's because it is the one thing that is keeping me interested.

This is really worse than tail-end-of-Holmoe for you?!?

I've been through this with Theder, Kapp, Gilbertson, and Holmoe. They've each been similar and the feeling I have now is the same: I don't even want to say/write too much negative sh!t because it's so obvious and so depressing.

One thing that's better now is that we're in a lot better position to attract a good coach that we have ever been in the past, but that doesn't make me feel better right now.

I have watched every game closely and will continue to do so. Part of it is a fascination to see if Tedford can try something different like playing Bigelow, experimenting with the Wildcat, or by some miracle seeing a different QB throw a pass. I guess I am stupid or a naive Bear fan to have some part of me think that these things MIGHT happen, but I continue to tune in with a sliver of hope.

Then, like last Saturday, I am just astounded at how inept the decision-making is throughout the game. At 21-3 at half-time I was absolutely 100% convinced that the Bears had no chance of making a game of it. I was bored, disgusted, and hopeless. Yet I still watched to see if ANYTHING new might happen. I was prepared to celebrate it like a win. But as I watched to the last play, hope was dashed.

I will do it all over again this Saturday. I wish I could simply ignore it and wait for next year, but I won't. I'm sure much of it will be no fun, and will be frustrating. But I'll have that sliver of hope, waiting for excitement, change, etc...

None of them came out and said this in so many words, but I got the message. NOTHING has changed in this regard in eleven years. My personal physician, who was a long time team doctor for many sports at Cal, told me the same thing ten years ago.

Not in my seats section II row 48. Can't get in or out unless the whole row gets up and leaves. I even took a measuring tape before a game and randomly measured the bench clearances on the west side and the row where we sit has 2" less clearance from our bench to the one in front than everywhere else I measured.

I have reasons to continue to watch the game in spite of our dismal performances this season - I know we all differ in many respects in terms of what makes us watch, and what makes us sick. If you accept that this season is a write off (I did that after Nevada), it becomes a different form of Saturday event: In addition, I am not a spectator sport person in general - find nothing interesting in any pro sport, and have loved only Cal football for 50 years. Saturdays this season mean - family get-togethers, my chili, and socializing either in the most magnificent Bay Area, or home around the TV here in Long Beach. The blue and gold colors, team on the field, band, brief moments of success seems enough this season..my family doesn't really care if we win or lose, and I have a hard time with that -- but I have good memories and down deep inside, know that the ugliness of this season will end soon - and next year..next year..a new page will be turned since we expect so much more now than 11 years ago, and expect more wins than losses, and could care less about entertainment on the field..just hard-hitting football from a program that devotes more energy into winning than to putting players into the NFL..

after years in the blue zone. We don't have as much room. I knew the money spent on the stadium would have no effect on our game day experience other than my wife liking the bathrooms (that is a big deal I guess) but I do like the fact that the stadium is safer. Not having as much room is an inconvenience but it is minor. It wasn't like the wooden bench seats were like sitting in a recliner.
