Is Tedford an evil genius?

Remember Major League? The owner's objective was to lose enough games to drive away fans so that she could move the Indians out of Cleveland. Maybe Tedford's figured out that by losing enough games and p*ssing off enough fans, it'll cost us more to keep him than to fire him. Here's what Tedford's done this season.

1. Sits Maynard to start the season due to a missed tutoring session and in the process loses to Nevada.
2. Refuses to play a game breaker like Bigelow who would help him win games.
3. Allows Bigelow to get a couple carries a game to remind us of what we're missing out on.
4. Close loss to tOSU and beats UCLA to show the team has talent and promise.
5. Gets whipped in the Big Game and against USC.
6. Reaches new low in APR/grad rates.
7. Guarantees a losing season with a pitiful performance against Utah.

On top of all that, he drove away his top recruiter and has left the cupboard bare as far as assistant coaches go so that there's no hope for a successful interim coach to take his place.

Given all of the above, I don't know what more he could've done to warrant being fired so that he can collect a paycheck without lifting another finger. I'm not sure he could do anything different if he were intentionally trying to get fired.

If I was trying to get fired I would do the same. Only thing left is to burn kline's redshirt for no reason what so ever.

hmmm ... could be. Let Kline take a couple of snaps, then become the holder for FGs (not many opportunities to hold for extra points).
Yeah, that would be enough to use a year of eligibility.

Bigelow will be a Junior next year since he played enough last year and this to use two years of eligibility.

hehe ... who called JT incompetent ... JT's getting back at Sandy for something she did to him.

Maybe she talked to him after the Furd disaster and he told her: "incompetent, you call me incompetent ... F U bytch ... I'll show you incompetence ... see how many seats you sell"
and JT did just that against Utah.

Yeah, Sandy's going to have to pay JT BIG BUCKS to get rid of him.

I've been saying this for most of the season. If he's not trying to get fired, the only other explanation for his decisions going back to game one is that he had a stroke or some kind of mental breakdown and is pretty much running this team as a vegetable. There are no other logical explanations.

I strongly believe that the mutual decision for his departure has already been made.

JT has over the past few years come to realize that his true love is the X's and O's of the game not the added duties that come with the title of Head coach. His $ earned over the past years and the buyout terms assure him of financial security and the added bonus of being able to become an OC in college or Pro football at a salary of 300-500 k and simply spend around 10 years enjoying what he believes (and maybe rightfully so) is his true calling.

Seriously. He may have been an X's and O's guy in his prime but I think the average high school coach can out duel him in any aspect of the game now.

I don't agree. what tedford has shown us isthe same thing others have shown. You can't be an OC and a Head coach for more than about 3 years. At that point the added duties infringe on your ability to stay up to date with the game.

JT would take a year off and then he would be able to come up with a job- maybe at a much lower salary than what i stated above but when he turns his full attention back to what he knows and loves best i think he might be a capable OC.

Think back to his early years at Cal. No one complained about a predictable and boring offense. But as time passed and he was no longer able to keep up and insisted that whoever became the OC be tied to his playbook than the problems arose.

I don't think he is a genius at all.

His offenses were never fancy or innovative. He was never particularly good at exploiting mismatches.

Tedford is the kid in class who gets straight As by studying 60 hours a week.

Sure he's smart, but he was successful as an OC and in his first few years at Cal by working his butt off. Teaching fundamentals, scrutinizing every little detail. Sleeping in his office, if he did get any sleep at all. It was good enough to get a team that had woefully under-performed to play above its expectations by transferring that tireless work ethic to his teams. His straightforward play calling allowed Cal to do what it did best. It wasn't creative, but it didn't need to be.

I think he's tired. It would have been impossibly unhealthy to work like that his whole career. His attempts to pass his duties on to his assistants has largely been a failure. The kids he's recruited lately maybe aren't as easily motivated as the team he took control of in 2002 that was desperate to win. There are lots of reasons for his downfall and it's clear he doesn't have the answer.

Best quick explanation I have read. Thanks.

The bay area is probably the only place in the world where this is considered a negative attribute. Here it's fashionable to tell people you hang out at the winery all day and have made a fortune with a brilliant new start-up when in reality you're just living off daddy's trust fund.

I have a feeling the coach everyone on this forum is looking for is going to be a real piece of work.

No one is denigrating the value of hard work, but the problem is that our coach appears to have burned out. Working harder and longer is not going to solve the problem. Talent and skills are necessary, along with hard work.
