Bah. They can pass a resolution of no confidence on the chancellor. Basically career ending. My guess is that the President would accept a resignation letter and thank said Chancellor for his/her service by the end of the week. It would take a while (faculty NEVER moves fast) to get to that point (3-4 months of wrangling and rear guard action) but that is what would happen if....

A) There was an academic/criminal scandal in the AD
B) Neither the coach, the AD nor the Chancellor acted

Frankly the academic scandal I don't THINK is that much of an issue. The NCAA acts pretty much as a partner in those instances. The bigger issue would be a "win at all cost" football coach confronted by an off the field scandal with a star player. Again, the problem with a coach with solely experience at, for example, Alabama vs. UC is that it is unclear that they will reflectively make the "right" call.

If you think the non-athletic wings of the university don't have power WHY is the AD under so much pressure to cut costs/raise revenues/reduce Chancellor subsidy? It is because while Barsky is an outlier, there are a LOT of faculty who are none too pleased their offices are not being cleaned while we just built a tajmahal gym up on the Hill.

I don't think it, I know it. And I know it from personal experience teaching and researching.

The reason that the AD is under pressure to stop losing money is because it is a serious issue and the UC is broke. It has nothing to do with Barsky. The faculty cannot shut down football. And with few vocal exceptions, they don't want to. They want to do great research, teach their classes, and not lose funding. Football does not drain their money, so they don't have a problem with it.

There seem to be a lot of people on this board that think the faculty make winning football games difficult or impossible. That just isn't the case. The faculty are the reason that a lot of the football players come here. They like being at a top ranked university. And the reason that Cal is a great university is because it has great faculty.

Not to be a prick but unless you teach in the UC System I don't think you know what you are talking about.

And no. barksy is a symptom not a leader. The point is that at many schools a Chancellor would tell those gripping about "being broke" to pound sand. Look at SDSU (a program MUCH further in the financial hole and which is equally "broke" but whose faculty is not as strong relative to President as UCs from a governance perspective). Weber told the critics to "eat dog do" and they did.

The UCB faculty doesn't want to shut down the program because Tedford "gets" the boundaries. He enforces/recruits for them. But seriously, do you think for a HEART BEAT that if one of our star players beat up his girl friend and was arrested on domestic violence charges said player could, as he would at the SEC, get away with a hand slap? If not thrown off the team, the faculty would go ballistic. THAT is the difference between coaching in the SEC and at UCB.

...ron riviera-his ability to field an outstanding hopefully youthful staff with nfl experience makes him a unique candidate along with his 1st hand experiences of a cal graduate; would play to win for sure; comparisons to joe kapp are pointless as joe surrounded himself with his friends not successful asst coaches; once on a bears roll, we would view cal as a dream job ...

In fairness to Kapp, one of the numerous major problems with hiring a coach with ZERO coaching experience at any level (not even as a high school assistant) is that his list of contacts for coordinator and assistant positions is rather sparse. Rivera as former DC for several NFL teams has regularly attended coaching conferences and clinics and currently knows many more active coaches than Kapp did.
