playcalling doesnt help. 3rd and 5 you are in 4 down territory why not run on 3rd and 5? especially with your back up qb

We've seen all Maynard can do. Bridge already better.
Now if he can just get reps and have some reasonable routes installed for the receivers.

I was happy with Bridgeford given the circumstances. In what little I've seen, he shows some promise.

That 15 yard dart AB delivered when he stepped up was better than almost anything ZM did this season. Just makes it so much more infuriating that JT didn't develop a guy that could you know... actually throw a ball.

Yeah, he didn't look that bad for a guy who had to come in cold.

Imagine how poorly we would play if we weren't fortunate to have a QB guru as coach.:sarc:

He will get lots of reps last two games.

I don't have big problem with play calling. For all I know he had other reads and focused on first read only.

Lots of freshman will get reps. I just hope we have enough guys. To finish season.

Yep.

I noticed too that we opted for a 10 yard pass from the 50 at the end of the half instead of the obvious hail mary. I assume Maynard can't throw it 50 yards. Didn't Boller once chuck it through the uprights on his knee from the 50?

LOL at the OP. That's by Maynard plays? Bridgford was vastly superior coming in with approximately zero snaps in months. Down by 8, game on the line, he marched the team up the field. Last few play calls sucked.

Kept his composure - improvised to Powe for a long gain (called back due to penalth) but then hit Rodgers for the big first.

Good pocket presence too -stepped up when he had to and didn't take a sack. He did make two overthrows but he came in cold with no practice at all - liked what I saw.

The fact he stepped up 'into the pocket' and threw the ball and not ran for the sideline at the first sign of pressure, was impressive.

He should have been playing the entire season. Simply no question he's better than Maynard. My dear departed Grandmother is better than Maynard.

I also liked what I saw. Damn Tedford for refusing to give him playing time this year.

That's because he did it in high school when he was good, before JT got a hold of him and ruined or didn't develop his play...JT simply needs to answer to the parents of 3 kids who WERE good QB's before they came to Cal

I thought AB looked OK. I thought he looked terrible last year when he got his chance, but his misses during the Nevada game seemed like near misses. Made a couple of throws tonight.

Managed not to throw a pick or fumble!

Stepped up in the pocked and stayed composed even though he would get hit after releasing the pass.

That last pass to CJ wasn't a bad pass... if CJ had run up the sideline instead of running out of bounds, he probably would have gotten PI called.

Yeah, I don't get the title of this thread at all.

Maynard looks like a guy from Revenge of the Nerds playing QB.

His demeanor, his throwing motion, his apparent leadership looks and has always looked HARRIBLE.

And that has always, ALWAYS left me and other fans feeling demoralized.

Imagine what it's like to play with the guy.

Maynard, on the other hand, looked brimming with confidence, looked like he was TRYING to take charge.

I don't mean to wish injuries on anybody, but I look forward to the Post-Package Deal era.

Yes. What I've been saying since the Nevada game.

People need to watch the plays again and see why they think he's so terrible. Of course, you'll get the standard answers of "he fumbles the handoffs" or "he can't put zip on his passes" and "he floats his passes" and "he's got no mobility and would get demolished behind our terrible OL -- that's why we're better off with Maynard."

So stupid.

Aslong as Tedford is calling the plays doesn't matter who the qb is. But Bridgeford didn't impress me other than 1 throw

People who have been advocating Maynard over Bridgford are as blind as Tedford. FFS, his throws were amazing under the circumstances. If he had two season of experience he'd be ten times the QB that Maynard is instead of just five. Cheers to Bridgford for looking respectable.

Seriously, it was the only thing that got me excited all night. Imagine a QB that can sense the pocket collapsing and step up instead of roll left every single time. Image a QB that can deliver a strike instead of wobbly ducks. Imagine a QB that actually looked like a Div 1 QB!

There were a few other throws that AB made that receivers dropped or was very well defended by Wash. I don't see Maynard making any of those throws.

Exactly. After one year starting at FBS Buffalo and nearly two full seasons as Cal's starting QB (adding up to probably 30 or so FBS starts in his career), Maynard is still a f___ing terrible QB and always will be at this level.

Compare that to Bridgford who hasn't started a single game and clearly has a lot more talent than Maynard, and you wonder what these clowns are thinking when they quickly dismiss Bridgford as terrible.

Jesus Christ, give the kid of a chance to show us what he can or cannot do.

Bridgford was 2 for 7 for 26 yards. If Shamburger didn't get the pass interference call we would've been off the field much sooner. Its obvious Maynard is no All American but he made plenty of good throws tonight that recievers simply couldn't hang on to. Theres no way I can say that Bridgford is better than Maynard nor state that he gives us the best chance to win based off what I have seen in Spring Practice, Spring Game, Nevada Game, and Tonights game.
rathokan

it almost doesn't matter whether or who's the better QB... Maynard is the known entity, and we know we're no good w/ him behind center.

We may be worse w/ AB, but there's also the chance that we'll be better. The way the season has gone, it was time to take the chance for better for worse.

Looks like Tedford will be forced to make the change for the last two games. Looking forward to seeing what we've got.

You apparently don't know much then, if you think Maynard gives Cal a better shot than Bridgford does, after seeing that garbage from Maynard for almost two full seasons at Cal.

First of all I hope Zach is OK. His knee was wrenched. Get well Zach. That said, he is very inaccurate. That throw to Bigelow behind the line was just an example of how erratic he is. He was like that all game. The best throw he made as the throw to Shaq. What was he looking at? AB does have zip on his throws and he seems to have pocket awareness. That said, I think Hinder or Boehm would be better.

It doesn't matter. Time for something new. New coaches please. All of them. Get well Zach. Thanks for playing hard for us.

One of the downsides of the end of the Maynard ere -- whenever that happens -- is that you're probably going to see fewer of those miraculous Harper catches trying to reel in inaccurately thrown balls.

The fact that we are even throwing backward passes with Maynard is a serious head scratcher.

Bridgford is 17 for 48 on his career. He is unathletic and has a slow delivery and weak arm. He has sucked every time we've seen him play and he sucked in HS in playoff games against good competition. He benefitted from playing on a dominant HS team and doing well at camps. He hasn't been able to beat out Maynard or any other QB ahead of him since arriving on campus. There is no reason to think he is the answer. There is no statistical category for "almost completions."
