It's not owned by the athletic department, it's campus wide.

UC is great and all, but UC Berkeley, Cal, University of California Berkeley, or whatever you want to call it is better. Who cares about the weird C thingy? If riverside uses it, then do we really care? Cal will always have something different to designate that we are not the same as the rest.

I disagree with this sentiment completely. It's the job of designers and other creative people to come up with sh!t, and in fact with a job like this, there was a selection of proposed logos to choose from. It's the committee of idiots that approved this crap that needs to be strung up and flogged.

If by "dumbed down" you mean "translated," then I have two replies:

1) You can't expect the lesser UC schools to bother learning a simple Latin phrase. They aren't Berkeley.

2) By your definition, the Latin is itself "dumbed down" from the original Hebrew - "Yahi Or."

I like the logo. I just don't like the color. I think tradition should mean something in college marketing. And maintaining the regal Berkeley blue is the best way to leverage that tradition.

Douglas Adams had it right - All marketing people to be told that they're going on a free vacation and then loaded up on a spaceship and sent directly to the sun. "Leverage"? WTF is that? This logo is tacky, stupid and pointless, period, and the color is only a small part of the problem.

Embarrassing. What's with all the color variations (even red and yellow!). Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised with the new efforts to offer more and more on-line courses. We are becoming a correspondence school (like the pseudo-universities owed by Regent Richard C. Blum) and now have the logo to go with it.

If this is the new UC system-wide logo, can we take back exclusive use of the old seal that was designed and created when were the one and only UC?
