Wonder what would have happened if we waited longer. Would Dykes have gone harder for the Lubbock job?

Oh boy, I hope this doesn't cause Dykes to back out. Does anyone have any public statements from Dykes re: Texas Tech? If I were TT's AD, I'd go hard after Dykes -- the roots run deep.

That was my first thought. Dang. But c'mon, Lubbock vs. what we got here?

But still Lubbock is where he's from and Texas Tech is his alma mater

And where his dad coached.

I think this will turn out like when Mike Montgomery took the Cal basketball job weeks before the Stanford job opened up.

His father, Spike Dykes, is the former coach at Tech and is a bit of a legend down there. Like I said in the other thread, really hope we have his name on a contract.

Spike a legend at TT. Sonny will create his own legacy at Cal.

Spike -- not his real name -- is Texas Teech's winningest coach and Mike Leach's predecesser.

He coached TT from 1986 -- when Sonny was a teen in high school -- to 1999.

There was already a 5-page thread on Sonny on the TT board since his hiring.

To loosely quote Bruce Feldman, "Tommy Tuberville had been trying to leave Lubbock almost as soon as he got there. He had interviewed for numerous other jobs including the Miami job way back when Al Golden got it".

Dykes and anyone else that is plugged into the College Football world knew Texas Tech was going to have an opening very very soon. If he were interested in the job, he wouldn't have accepted this one. This is where he and his family want to be.

RT @BFeldmanCBS: No truth to rumor Sonny Dykes isn't signed at Cal. He signed term sheet before presser. He's excited abt where he is now

FootballScoop Staff @footballscoop
Sonny ain't leaving Cal RT @RandyRosetta: @footballscoop You know if Sonny Dykes has put pen to paper at Cal?

Also, his dad has a long shadow.

Here's the TT board's Sonny thread.

BTW, the TT board is dancing in the streets over this.

No, and the Big 12 still has issues--but it is his hometown and alma mater.

I think he is committed to Cal at this point. He and his wife have probably been looking at homes and are excited about living in the Bay Area. No looking back.

You need to be a pipeline to TT because Tech officals said they were completely blindsided by Tuperware's decision according to ESPN.

Just because you grow up in a place doesn't mean you want to live there. I grew up in Orange County, and although I love going back for the occasional weekend trip to visit the folks, I will never live there voluntarily.

Further, if Sonny wants to coach at one of the marquee programs (Ohio State, USC, Texas, Florida, etc.), I tend to believe the University of California is a better launching point than Texas Tech, more resources, more localized talent (and for the record, I'm not worried about those marquee programs calling, he has a lot of work to do before he gets to that level, and we will see if he has that level of coaching acumen).

The fact that Tuberville is leaving a Big 12 job for one in the Big East should tell you all you need to know about the Texas Tech job.

TT officials were not being honest. Tuberville wanted out of Lubbock and his wife is very unhappy there. A contact of mine in Lubbock says that there've been all kinds of issues with Tuberville and his wife there including an incident there where the wife was driving drunk and it was covered up.

Not that this makes the move any more logical but Cincinnati is pushing hard to leave the Big LEast for the ACC

Sorry for re-posting this from another thread. But since this seems to be the main thread for this topic.

Stewart Mandel interviewed Dykes 2 months ago for his podcast.

Listen here:

This is what Mandel tweeted Wednesday:

I'm a Mandel fan but I'm wondering if he thought before tweeting this. Dykes had to have known that TT would open up soon. He clearly patiently waited to get 4 offers before taking Cal's, why not wait a little longer for TT?

ANY other coach and this wouldn't be an issue.

But the Dykes family is beloved in Lubbock.

Searching Sonny Dykes on Twitter, and everybody is saying that's his dream job.

Man, it would be funny (in a sad way) if he left.

I went from being slightly disappointed to being totally pumped by this hire.

I don't believe he'll leave. I'm sure Tech is a sentimental favorite but it's a much much worse job. I have to think he's a rational guy.

He can't leave until he gets us a Rose Bowl win damnit.

Man that would be very Kiffen of him to leave after everything he said about the Cal job. If TT offers him some ridiculous salary I'm sure he'd be out the door though.

I don't think TT pays well. The Big 12 school with all the money is Texas and they don't share. There is a reason Tuberville is leaving for the Cincinnati job and that job is not better than the Cal job.

Does he get a raise 2 days into the job?

By the way, here's Spike Dykes' coaching record.

My comment is that TTU must have really sucked before Spike got there because that record isn't anything to be pumped about. They probably love him just because he is a Lubbock good old boy who at least gave them a fighting chance. They are always behind UT, Okie, OSU, TAMU when it comes to recruiting....probably Baylor too now.

FWIW, his wife Kate also graduated from Tech and is a TX native.
