NFL Network is running a crawl indicating his career might be over. Pretty sad it was so short. I was at the Oregon State game and seated at the opposite end zone when I saw him leap to try to score. I couldn't believe how high he was off the ground after a Beaver pushed him after he had already jumped. That was his last Cal rushing attempt. I hope he will not have ongoing concussion symptoms and can lead a normal life.

This is good for him. I said this in the beginning and got blasted by BI posters but after the injuries he's gone through, Im happy Jahvid is retiring. The guy is awesome (took a few classes with him) and I honestly dont want to see the guy hurt himself more. Good luck to him.

I wonder if he has any interest in coaching. I am sure that Gould could find a spot for him.

I was in QQ when it happened right in front of me. I immediately thought the worst, and those were some excruciating minutes that passed before we saw any signs of hope. His last college play will forever be etched in my memory, along with all of the times he saw a sliver of daylight at the line of scrimmage and took it to the house. Best of luck to Jahvid.

Very sad it has to end this way. His run vs UCLA was legend. Here's hoping he comes back to Cal and finishes his degree (if he hasnt already)

that Javid find out this early that maybe he never did have the 'skull' to play football for a living. Luckily, I learned very early that I didn't have the 'skull' for boxing. A friend was teaching me how to box and the first time we sparred he hit me in the head. I saw stars. I stuck to hitting the heavy and speed bags after that. Good workout and they don't hit back. I still marvel at boxers who never went down even after repeated smacks to their melon. There just must be something physically different about their skulls and mine.

Hope his health recovers with no lasting effects.
Javid made a chunk of money and, based on other players' problems, maybe a short career is better than a long one.

Sadly Jahvid's career was over when the hit he took in the Oregon St game, he hasn't been the same player since. I hope he's invested his NFL earnings and moves on with a positive and productive life, he still and always will be one of my favorite CAL players!

Huh? I recall most posters advocating that Best shut it down after that horrific injury. No one wanted to see him hurt further.

It's a real shame his career was marred by injuries and concussions. I really hope he is able to lead a long and healthy life after football. He was one of the most exciting players to ever suit up for CAL.

Yes, we will all remember his last play, but the one that stands out in my mind was watching him hit the hole in the 2008 Washington State game on the first play from scrimmage and taking it 80 yards for the touchdown.

That Oregon State play was the first and only time I've been legitimately scared while watching a football game. I really thought he had paralyzed himself.

He's a smart kid and will be ok.

We kind of new (and hoped) his career would be over. Concussions are not something to play around with.

I agree. He had many great eye-popping runs but that run always sticks out to me for the sheer audacity of it. Straight up the middle, break the safeties ankle with one cut, and then gone for 80 yards. I think he did it again very early in the 3rd quarter too.

I think this was a year ago, when he had another concussion. A few posters were making remarks about how we are not his coach, we are not doctors, blah blah blah, and that we should "just let the guy play".

Evidently retirement is difficult for many athletes, mentally and financially. One can only hope for the best.

My seats were down in that corner and I was at that game. Hands down most frightening moment in Cal football history for me, glad he was able to recover for that. Sad end to a promising career, but better that he walks away healthy and doesn't keep at it and risk making it worse.

I hope Javid gets the balance due on the contract. Either way, he did get a nice nest egg.
As to life after football ... Javid was a very humble guy and wasn't into himself.
He's a bright guy and should have a great future after football.

Maybe an unpopular view, but I think they should let him play. No, concussions should be not treated trivially. I think they are serious. I also think CTE is also serious. I also care for Jahvid Best.

But I also imagine that concussions happen all the time in the NFL and many athletes do not go on and kill themselves.

I think every athlete that plays in the NFL understands the risks. These guys have dreamed of playing in the NFL and playing there is fulfilling that dream.

People die freeclimbing but it's not been outlawed. The same goes for motorcycles. There are just naturally very risky sports/hobbies out there where you risk death or severe injury. Playing in the NFL is one of them.

I wonder why he's being singled out. Maybe it has something to do with the Seau family suing the NFL?

I was frustrated the system allowed him back in the game so soon after his previous concussion. ..and then osu happened.

I still dont think the docs and coaches should have let him play... a lot of people then said doctors know best, and quite clearly, now, we know no one knows **** including doctors, except that we have known for a decade that multiple concussions are terrible for your health.

It might actually help him that his career was relatively short -- he didn't have as much time to get full of himself and used to spending tons of cash.

It's a shame. Generally I don't care about any athelete's individual success aside from wanting Cal players to succeed to benefit recruiting, but Best was one of the few exceptions. He was a blast to watch and a great person and role model off the field.

I don't see how he is being singled out; the article says that he has failed to find doctor that will clear him to play football. If he eventually finds that doctor (which doesn't seem likely) and nobody will sign him, then maybe he was singled out.

Here is Jahvid's NFL highlights, the Lions were a different (much better) team with him.

Sad I won't see new highlights from Best, but happy he will be healthier.

In my opinion he is perfectly situated to make a run at making the US team for Rio in the 200m and 4x100 (I don't think he could make the 100m team individually). I've been a proponent of this for the last year actually.

I'm glad he's able to retire now before he suffered any additional injury. I met him (and Shane) at the Cal Football Fantasy Camp a few years back, and they were both two of the most down to earth, intelligent, well spoken, and nicest kids you could ever meet. I was thoroughly impressed.
