JT had to leave Cal for multiple reasons.
How he does in Trojanland with all the resources they have and at OC says nothing about what needed to happen here when he was HC.

There is no question the he would have a lot more talent to work with at USC. But the biggest problem the last few years wasn't raw talent per se. Rather, it was twofold:

1) his inability to develop raw talent. We had plenty of 4 star QBs (and 1 5 star QB) that he was never able to develop.

2) his utter predictability as a play caller. Pac-12 defensive coordinators knew exactly what was coming.

I hope he gets the opportunity to go to SC. I also hope he is successful--except against Cal. I watched highlights of Best and Desean last night. Tedford's teams for five and a half years were worth more than my season tickets cost, and all the travel expenses. Watching both of them against Tennessee reminded me how great things were--and how much they fell off after Oregon 2007. Thanks coach Tedford.

On point 1, one never knows how much better he'll do coaching with a better team of offensive assistants.

On point 2, someone made the point recently (Our Dominion?) that JT's offensive was not premised on fooling anybody. It was based on having a good enough OL to impose will, even if the opponent could predict the play. That is why Cal fell apart completely with no OL. I think the situation will be different at $C. $C, with the kind of personnel they have at OL, should be able to impose their will. It is interesting, however, that the Trojans didn't win the recruiting battle for OLs last year (Stanford) or this year (UCLA). They may have some troubles down the line imposing their will.

Suffice it to say, I don't think the team of LK at HC, JT at OC and CP at DC is going to strike fear into the hearts of pac-12 opponents.

I couldn't disagree more about point #2. If that were true, his playbook wouldn't have been so long and complex. Tedford called quite a bunch of trick plays, his formations were always complex and shifting, and there was a lot of misdirection (screens, draws, counters, etc.).

Unfortunately (and despite the largest playbook in the Pac-12), the Pac 12 defensive coordinators seemed to have his number for a good while now.

Kennedy Pola out as SC offensive coordinator. Officially today. It's been rumored on the green board for days though.

The other thing mentioned on the green board is Tedford coming in as SC's OC.

I don't see it happening but we'll see....

We've taken to calling him Lane Hackett.

Kiffin is flaining around the way JT did for a few years before getting canned. Replacing DC and OC in the same year is a sure sign the HC isn't getting it done and doesn't have any clue how to fix the problem.

These sorts of things usually go very bady. JT would be a good fit as OC for USC, but this year he would be better finding a comfy job in the broadcasting booth and waiting for that SC train wreck to run its couse. Kiffin *might* turn things around, but usually these sorts of "house cleanings" make things worse, not better, and there goes JT's marketability. I wouldn't bet my career on Kiffin righting this ship.

This makes plenty of sense to me. Kiffin was not going to give up playcalling duties to someone he did not respect. Tedford is available, is respected (yes, especially by the SC folks) and will have the confidence of Kiffin to call plays. He also probably trusts Kiffin. Which counts for a lot.

JT and Pendy are very good when they have above average talent. They will have that in LA.

I imagine that they will do very well.

It is interesting that Lane made the statement that he was not getting rid of his OC earlier in the off-season, and then, as soon as the settlement with JT comes through, where he gets to keep any salary he makes below 1.5 million per, he possibly moves to SC. If they pay him his million, then that is pretty good for a guy who just got thrown away.

Kiffin needs some adults around, and JT is a good recruiter. I think this makes SC a much tougher competitor if true.

I think this would make sense if Kiffin had a longer leash, but if I was JT, I would not want to be the OC for SC next year given the short leash on Kiffin.

True - it would be a big deal for JT if he went there and they sucked and he got canned immediately. He would have to have a multi-year deal, I would imagine. He is good at that.

I agree with you all the way. If it happens it could come back to haunt CAL in the long run. JT and Pendy might just be what Kiffen needs to bring SC back.

SC saved a million dollars a year by switching from Monte to Pendy. As much as I would love to see Tedford at SC (which I am very confident would result in the worst SC offense since Hue Jackson), I'm sure they can hire better. Pendy, on the other hand, I think will end up having the most dominant defense in the Pac at SC and may save Kiffen's job.

Would SC even be able to field an offense for the next few years while they absorb the intricacies of the play book?

I say that had to have been Calumnus' observation about JT's offense, not mine. Sounds like something he would notice over the years and he's spot on.

thanks anyways.
