Oops Marica on college

Marica's is really good. Talked to the owner/chef one night. Get reservations. Small place fills up fast

I ate at Commis in December and it was one of the better meals I've ever had. We sat at the counter and were able to watch them prepare all the dishes. It's a relative bargain compared to similar restaurants.

Did you have wait a month for your reservation? What happens if on the day of your reservation, they serve something you don't like? Just wondering.

The Commis chef also has a place in uptown Oakland...Hawker Fare....we always get the short ribs....excellent value.

People seem to either love or hate Commis. We've eaten there twice and found it great. I prefer it to Chez Pannise, more creative and less holier than thou BS but you are in the hands of the Chef

Gathers write up sounds like something from a skit from an earlier season of "Portlandia".

Yes, pretty much

I'm one of those who didn't love Commis and really don't understand the hype. Far too much style, way too little substance. A bowl of rocks and mushrooms foraged from the foothills of Oakland is what I remember most about the place. Its not that the food is bad or anything, it just wasn't as great as others make it seem. It seems like a relative value at $75 for over an hour worth of dining, but I'd much rather my money go into the food.

I've been disappointed by just about every Michelin starred restaurant I've eaten at though, and I don't think its just unrealistic expectations. I didn't realize it was the same chef of Hawker Fare. I use to eat at the restaurant that was there before Hawker Fare, and then I tried it after it changed. I basically got the same dish, Gai Yang, that I use to get but paid more for less food.

To get back on topic, I love Gum Kuo in Chinatown and Ole Ole Burrito near city center. Cam Huong is my banh mi place also. All of these are pretty cheap eats but make my lunch rotation.

People in the city like to make fun of bridge-and-tunnel types but I really missed the East Bay having lived there so long and knowing a bunch of great restaurants.

I have always found it funny that these SF snobs who refer to us "bridge and tunnel" underlings tend to be people who have lived in SF for about 2 years. Usually born in Wisconsin or Fresno and living in a Marina apartment on daddy's dime. I don't mind the daddy's dime part but looking down on the east bay, one of the best places in the world to live, is just ridiculous. The good thing is these people tend to move back to their hometown after a few years.

From experience, I can say this this is often very true.

BTW, those places also spawn all the "hipster".

You think that's bad? Try living in NYC or LA where said phenomenon is even worse.

"Oh, I could never leave [Manhattan/the Westside], I mean [Brooklyn/other parts of L.A.] are probably fine for some people, but after living here as long as I have, I just have higher standards, you know?"
"Really. How long have you lived here?"
"Almost 2 years."
"And where are you originally from?"
"Nebraska."
