Does anyone know when Cal mails out acceptance letters this year for HS seniors? I have a cousin who still hasn't heard anything...don't want to ask her since I think she's kinda stressed out.

Nowadays, this is how high school students find out they got into UC Berkeley....

My understanding is that it should be this thursday. My son is waiting to hear as well.

By the way, that is when they will be posted. Emails that the decision is ready will likely go out and then kids can check on line. Letters will follow later. This has been the process we have experienced so far with other schools.

When I got accepted from Cal a year after getting rejected out of high school, first thing I said was "DA F*CK?" Never thought I would ever get in.

That is why I love my University. Getting in is really something to be proud of. Graduating from Cal is even more awesome.

Back in the day, getting that thick envelope from Berkeley in the mail was awesome!!!
Those videos brought back memories of raising my fist in the air and yelling as I read the acceptance letter.

I got in as a grad student and is still the most rewarding thing I ever did in my life.

Now, I'm hoping the daughter of a fellow classmate in Europe receives her acceptance to Berkeley this week. She's visited here and thinks it's great.

My story was pretty silly. I was in the bathroom (nothing gross in the story just the setting) checking my inbox when I saw there was a new message at my cal account. Well I signed in and the first thing I see is the big congratulations! Title. Needless to say I was in no position to celebrate the right way so I just started yelling "I got in" over and over. Thankfully my dad heard me and we both celebrated through the door. Then I remembered where I was and knew I had more immediate business to take care of.

It's insane how hard it is to get in nowadays.

Back in the day, sure there the genius-types, but a fairly large percentage of the incoming freshmen were just very solid students from Northern California. No longer.

I shouldn't be complaining: My Cal diploma has never shone so brightly. However, I gotta think that, down the road, my son and daughter won't have a very good chance of following in their Daddy's footsteps

Depends on how old they are now.
I remember reading that the population of college-age kids is projected to peak in the next decade, and then start to decline.

I remember the morning I got mine, I had received acceptance emails from two other schools as well. A small part of me was hoping Cal would reject me so my final decision would be that much easier.

Coincidentally, the Cal decision was supposed to be out at 4PM, then got bumped to 6PM, and I think it finally came out around 8PM. Made for a very nerve-wracking day.

I kept the letter/package I got from CAL when I got accepted in 1994. Still remember the day I got it in the mail. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear back from CAL!

I pretty much had the same response when I got in. After being denied from UCLA and I had already pretty much accepted I was going to UCSD, I saw congratulations with my girlfriend at the time, and starting YELLING!

Such a great memory, kind of wish I did record it!

Even though it was fairly recent (2006), I was surprised to receive the acceptance letter the day of the online confirmation, but before the online confirmation was given.

I transferred in to Cal in the middle of my sophomore year.

They called me on the phone on a Thursday to tell me I was admitted for spring quarter starting the following Monday. I flew up to Oakland on Friday, shared a cab to Berkeley, left my bag with a nice guy in admissions and started to look for housing. Stayed with a friend's family in SF for first couple nights.
Found housing (me sleeping on couch) over weekend and then started classes on Monday.

And I had never been to Berkeley or even the Bay Area in my life prior to that point.

It all turned out very well, but what an experience.

So it's true? UCLA is harder to get into than Cal?

for some reason, in the past few years, and even during the years of when i was in hs (just 6 years ago), students were usually only admitted by EITHER Cal or UCLA. only the top notch kids HS kids got accepted by both. those kids often had admissions to ivy schools and other privates.

that was our collective experience in the south bay.

No. Some kids get into Cal but not to ucla. Some kids get into ucla but not to Cal. It depends on who is reading your essay and whether you strike a chord with that person.

Sorry, I must have forgotten to add the :p to the end of my post.

Seems odd to only get into Cal or UCLA though, not sure why UC would do that (intentionally) as beeasyed seems to have suggested. I would guess that most kids nowadays get into both if they get into either, although it seems that admissions are more subjective now than in years past.

CalAdmissions FAQ: What time will FR decisions be posted tmrw? A: Late afternoon (PST). That's the best answer we can give. :-)

-----------------------

I have a strong hunch that Cal Admissions says late aft to keep everyone from inundating them with inquiries.

I work with some 27 applicants hoping to play club mw vball when they GET here. I told them, if it was me, I would be checking every hour starting at 9am.
End of day, anyway...???
Who knows.
.....and no, Admissions doesn't talk to club sports....our players get in on grades/scores/essay like everyone else.

Cal is accepting about the same # as the past years....not sure why it might take longer even though there were some 80,000 applicants.

Past records show that some 40% or so admits, actually commit.
Silly though it sounds.......

Those applying to Cal apply all over the place to top academic schools, so I surmise they have reasons for not committing to Cal.
Me? imho dumb decision to say no.

A lot of it has to due with county representation; they want to representation from all parts of the state, both Cal and Ucla

Who else (besides me) got rejected by UCSD?

I didn't apply to UCLA. To close to my home (13 miles).

it's ridiculous how difficult it is to get into ucla or cal nowadays.

sh!t when i applied back in mid 90s, getting into UC was easy.

my essay was the key because "numbers" weren't that great.

I applied in the late 90s and got into all 3 - UCSD, Cal, and UCLA. If I applied today, I seriously doubt I would get into any of them. Times have changed...

My daughter was offered admission to Cal today and UCLA last week.
Not sure which one she will choose -- she likes Cal but I think may be too close to home for her...

Almost the exact same reaction as me, except I didn't have a girlfriend at the time (we had just broke up a few months prior).

I had applied to 5 California schools (Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and CSULB) and got rejected by UCLA (my dream school at the time).

I was leaning towards UCSD and I didn't even check Berkeley for a while because I assumed I had been rejected. On a random whim I checked the online site and got in. No more UCSD after that.

Here is an old guy's story of admission to Cal like almost 50 years ago.

I graduate from HS will a less than a 2.0. Got serious in Jr College, but only made the minimum which was like a 2.8 or so. I only applied to Cal, no one in my family had gone to a 4 year college, so I didn't know the game.

It was way late, in April I think, most acceptance letter were out and I still had no word. I was pretty discouraged and figured I would try a last minute application to Long Beach State as plan B.

I was working cleaning a bakery part time and my folks called and said I got a letter from Cal. I was pretty discouraged and told them to just open it. They told me it was a thick envelop. I figured if I were not accepted it would be a think letter. So I told them to hold everything and I dashed home and enjoyed one of the best days of my life.

Go Bears!

My younger son got accepted. Also got accepted into UCLA, Northwestern and USC.

Still has a couple of schools outstanding. I think he is going to the evil empire (USC) because it's better for his major and he got a great scholarship.

My older son graduates from Cal in May.

I had several of my senior econ students panting today in hopes of getting notified they were admitted to Cal. It's amazing how competitive it is now..When I applied in l968, you were just about guaranteed a spot in at least one UC with a 3.0 GPA and minimum 1000 on the old SAT. There were no ceilings yet at UCD, UCI or UCR! I had to choose between Claremont Men's College and UCSB as a freshman..and was a Gaucho for two years before a Bear! A big "congrats" to the parents here who have their kids accepted to Cal..it's a big deal mom and dad!
