I have to agree with the angy old man sentiment, and I'm under 35. I just don't understand this need to keep up with the "in" trend. We are Berkeley. We aren't followers. Leave that $hit for Oregon.

Either we start our own trend or be really cool and just decide to go full on retro (unis from 70's for instance). Every other school is running out these new Nike or Adidas jerseys. They all look the same. I hate copying what other schools are doing and I especially hate following oregons lead.

Weren't we taught to think outside of the box? Weren't we taught to be different? Isn't that what makes us cal?

You've said it very well, my friend!

You're correct about the impact of winning on one's view of the uniforms. You win, and people overlook the ugly uniforms; Oregon is the poster child for that.

I'm not so sure about where the players really stand or the view of equipment teams all over the country. I've seen nothing regarding the latter, but, frankly, I could care less what equipment teams all over the country think.

as to the players :

and as to the eq teams... i just saw them commenting on loving the new digs and helemet and so forth ( not that i need them to say anything but its kwel to see the peer respect ; that was my point )

if they feel " brand new " wearing them lets go bears grrrrrrrrrr

Agree with everyone who says the gray uniform looks like the "Generic Brand" side in a detergent commercial. Have to say, it does make the white uniform look really, really good..

The last change to the Cal FB uniforms were in 2008 and lasted until 2012 (5 seasons). The jinxed White Helmets showed up for the 2012 season. That's it. Two major changes in 5 football seasons, one in the beginning of a 5-year span (the entire uniform) and one at the end of it (the white helmet) so stop with your exaggeration BS.

The white helmets made their first appearance in an away game against Oregon in 2011.

I'm afraid you're full of BS; I'm hardly exaggerating. There have been more "tweaks" than you acknowledge. We're nowhere near as bad as Oregon, but it seems like we're holding them up as the standard bearer when it comes to uniforms.

Then list all those "tweaks" you keep whining about. I count only two --

1) the wholesale uniform change in 2008

2) the White Helmets in one appearance in 2011 and multiple appearances in 2012

BTW mix-and-matching tops and bottoms were a team decision allowed by Tedford and take place even at the High School level.

Where's your list of tweaks, buddy?

Grey is no good in HD. I recommend we televise our games in black and white...kind of a football noir look

Wow, the Grey looks terrible. I find it depressing that the dominant away uniform is going to look like that. Particularly because the all-whites look pretty damn good.

Oh well, if we actually win some in them I'm not going to give a crap.

These new football uniforms are just horrible. I hate the matte helmets and the predominance of one color in all the versions. If Dykes had anything to do with this (and I suspect he did) then he has miserably failed his first big decision at Cal.

Coming from a guy who probably dresses like this, that's a compliment.

We don't have Grey Helmets, but after all these years Cal still can't escape the shadow of West Virginia (another Blue and Gold school sponsored by Nike) because they wore grey last year.

I can dig the look, but just saying....

Yeah, I can see the blue and gold getting a little more pop against the gray background.

I really don't understand the motivation for continuous change, other then the drive to sell more apparel.

I think you just answered your own question.

Personally, I'm fine with the new uniforms. They are basically the same except for the matte helmets (which I am very much in favor of) and the gray version (which I'm very much not in favor of - I think any school that uses colors other than their own or white in a significant way is being lame).

That being said, to the extent I can bring myself to care that much, I think you go with one of two strategies. Either you 1) never change your uniforms, establish a look that is instantly recognizable as you; or 2) change at will for marketing purposes.

We are clearly going for #2. I just wish we would be trendsetters instead of followers while we do it.

I thought by NCAA regulation, away uniforms (at least the tops) had to be predominantly WHITE (the WV picture above shows their grey version, but it must be at home as you can see the visitors in white in the background).

So I'm not sure if this comment about grey's being used for most away games is valid; did it really come from Dykes?

Hence, the penalization of USC/UCLA when they wanted to both wear their home uniforms for the rivalry game?

I just don't get the grey uniforms. No. Just No.

The USC/UCLA game of 2008 led to a change in the NCAA rules from traditional white road jerseys to a road jersey of a "contrasting" color. Furthermore, I think it's only for in-conference games if approved by the Conference --

The NCAA Football Rules Committee has approved a change that will require opposing teams simply to wear jerseys of contrasting color....

....The new rule merely allows teams to ask for a game-by-game exception from their conference, which is responsible for ensuring that the colors contrast.
