My buddy is a huge Rush fan and I was a fan up until the Power Windows album back in the day. Well, Rush came to town. My buddy bought us tickets and I wasn't too excited to go-after all, who wants to see old dudes with thinning long hair still trying to run around the stage like maniacs when they should be sitting in rockers on the front porch?

Well, we went to the concert and I have to admit I was blown away. They have been together for 30 years and played like a band who can only play like that because of the familiarity with one another. Tight, excellent musicianship. Just three guys, at the top of their musical game, putting out A LOT of sound. I loved it.

1990 -- MC Hammer, Arco Arena, Sacramento, CA

1991 -- Public Enemy, Arco Arena, Sacramento, CA

1991 -- Green Day, Casa Zimbabwe, Berkeley, CA ($5 admission, included keg, Green Day performed in a room with no stage, hip hop DJ in the other big room, there were as many people dancing in the hip hop room as there were peole in the Green Day room)

The Golliwogs were the precursor to CCR. Saw them at the Bears Lair in '68 or '69. Front row. They were tight. I figured we'd be hearing more from them. I remember buying the CCR album Green River somewhere on Telegraph for $2.88. Yes, as a matter of fact, I am old. Just turned 65 two days ago. Celebrated by getting a hole-in-one on the 18th at Deep Cliff in Cupertino. It's all very very good.

The Who LA Coliseum 1982, Oakland 1992 (Both Shows)

Miles Davis 1985

Run D.M.C., Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and EPMD at the LA Greek.

Harry Connick with his Big Band 1990's

Salvation Army International Staff Band. The best brass band in the world.

Arnold Jacobs Memorial Concert - Chicago Symphony Hall. A collection of the finest brass players alive in honor of the greatest tuba player of all time.

Any concert of the US Marine Band. If you have a chance to hear a concert don't pass it up. All concerts are free and they are one of the finest concert bands in the world. And they are US Marines. 'nuff said.

The most memorable was the day after we beat USC badly at home - Bill Graham's memorial show on the polo fields at GGP - CSN&Y, the Dead, Journey, CCR, Los Lobos, Santana, Joe Satriani, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Bobby McFerrin ... Robin Williams got up on stage too.

The Amnesty show at the Oakland Coliseum in fall 1988 had two of the most dynamic performers I've seen: Springsteen and Peter Gabriel both did full shows.

The Police Day on the Green show was my first 'big' concert with no parents when I was 15.

I wasn't at the show, but running up and down the Strawberry Canyon fire trails listening to Santana play at the Greek on a hot fall afternoon is a priceless memory.

Great thread flukes. It looks like there isn't a lot of indie rock or hip hop love so I'll throw some out off the top of my head for change of pace:

Frank Black in Brooklyn in 2002

Decemberists at Bimbos in 2004 (Okkervil River opened)

Radiohead at the Greek in LA 2000 (Handsome Boy Modeling School opened)

Blackeyed Peas (back when they were awesome). Epic show at citywalk with eminem, the Roots, Macy Gray and for some odd reason Everlast. BEP closed down the show after the lights went out and the security staff tried to clear the joint
Flaming Lips at the Wiltern (I think) in 1999

Florence + the Machine at the Fox in 2010

Taleb Kweli and Blackalicious at the Independent in 2005ish

Faith No More at the Warfield

The Shins at Great American Music Hall in 2002

The Hives at Slims

I forgot about Talking Heads at the Greek 1983,The Ramones I think 1977 Mabhuay gardens.

I went to a few at the Olympic Auditorium in high school in mid 80's... The Vandals, Circle Jerks, Exploited, Adicts, suicidal tendencies.

Way back when downtown was really seedy prior to LA Live.

I also forgot that Echo and the Bunnymen and New Order played the Greek my first week in school back in '87. Was wild walking from the dorms at Clark Kerr to such a great concert and venue.

X also played live in the Sproul ballroom that year too..

How about Talking Heads free on Lower Sproul Plaza circa Spring 1980?

Needless to say, it was not publicized in advance. I'm walking by and the noise eminating from LSP was much greater than it even normally was on a Friday afternoon. I take a look and I'm like, WTH?!?

I'm not sure it was the best concert I ever went to, but I know I didn't go to class that afternoon...

PS: I'm not too, too into going to concerts, so I hadn't read this thread. Needless to say, it has nonetheless been rather compelling. For those who saw early CCR, what was it like? Anybody ever seen Springsteen in a small venue?

No, Hong Kong Cafe.. It was a legendary punk venue (2nd floor, above the restaurant in the 70s).

In the early 90s, it was revived as a punk rock venue and I went to many concerts there as a teenager.

I saw the Vandals, Circle Jerks and Suicidal Tendancies.

Saw Circle Jerks at the Hollywood Palladium, probably around 1992, or 1993.

Also got to talk to Keith Morris and Fear's Lee Ving.

Cool stuff for a teen. Madam Wong's closed by 90s, sorta the grandmother of punk rock in LA. She was a real character and choose the bands personally.

Well, grab a barf bag, 'flukes. CCR actually played at our fraternity house (under their previous name, The Golliwogs) in the mid-sixties. I believe we paid them $75 plus a keg. I was also in the front row when Hendrix played his first gig at the Fillmore in '67. He played 2 sets, as did Jefferson Airplane (Gabor Szabo was the third act).

U2 - 1985 The Unforgettable Fire Tour at The Cow Palace. Unreal concert. After the show 30,000 plus filed out in stunned silence. It was surreal.

The Cure - 1985 The Head On A Door Tour at The Greek in Berkeley. Man, that was a great album and a great band at their peak in a spectacular venue with perfect weather. It was the first time that I had ever ingested fungi and wow! Just WOW!

The Who - 1982 The Farewell Tour at The Oakland Coliseum. My second big concert (Saw Earth Wind & Fire at Cal Expo in 1981. Also a great show). The Clash was the opening act. Need I say more? Freaking epic and yes, my ears were ringing for a week. It may have stunted my growth it was so loud. Awesome.

David Bowie -1984 or '85 Sound and Vision Tour at CalExpo. Bowie is a god. I was in the front row and had a great time until the crush of fans started pushing everyone up against a chain link fence and people started passing out. I thought I might die. It was really scary but Bowie? He's da man.

Public Enemy - 2009 Coachella Music Festival. PE rocked the house. They performed their entire album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" for the first time in over twenty years. Chuck D still lays it down. It was one incredible night in the desert.

Many many others but those are the highlights. Great thread flukes. Brought back a lot of memories.

Day on the Green freshman year at Cal with the Police, The Fixx, Thompson Twins, Madness and Oingo Boingo in '83. The Police were incredible. I actually picked up a dvd recently of them at that concert behind the scenes. Wish they had the other acts, too.

Miss the old Day on the Greens. They had some amazing lineups.

Back in the mid 70's I worked with some people that had an extra ticket for an Elton John concert at the Oakland Colisium. I wasn't a big Elton fan, but that dude put on a hell of a concert.
BTW judging by these posts that "I may be old, but I got to see all the cool bands" t-shirt is correct.

Iggy Pop in the '80s played a tiny club in SF that has long since burned down. Was 20 feet away the whole night and DRENCHED in sweat afterwards - amazing performance.

A couple years ago The Waterboys played at the Regency Ballroom in SF - was like a rollicking Celtic revival meeting, just brilliant

Also a couple years ago, The Church played 3 ENTIRE ALBUMS at the Great American Music Hall - the concert lasted more than 3 hours and the musicianship and vocals were stunning

Saw The Church at a tiny bar in Sacramento in 1986. They came out and said "We can't believe we're playing this sh!t hillbilly bar". Lol. They were awesome.

Bob Marley at The Oakland Auditorium in 1977 or 78. Simply amazing. It's hard to single out one or two Dead shows, but let's just say many, many shows from 1976 until Jerry's passing. I have to say that I loved a Jerry Band show at the Keystone in the Fall of 1977 with Garcia, John Kahn, Maria Muldaur, Merl Saunders blew my mind.

More recently, I saw the Allman Bros at the Beacon this past March, and they totally rocked. Same for a small show at the Troubadour with Jackson Browne, Bob Weir, Jeff Lynn, Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench.

Yeah, all day I was thinking of other concerts I had been to but forgotten about until now. Eagles in Austin TX, Steve Miller Band at the Shoreline, Bad Company at the Concord Pavilion, Chris Isaak somewhere in the City and I had forgotten the only show at the Greek I ever saw-UB40 when I was at Cal one summer. A couple of buddies and I snuck in from the back and we thought we were geniuses at the time. We all got really bad cases of poison oak later in the week.:rollinglaugh: I also saw some great punk bands at the Hollywood Palladium back in the day but am struggling to remember all the names. I wish I had seen the Clash and the Who when I had the chance.

A couple of things came to mind today...where did I get the money to see all those shows? It also occurred to me that I might have taken a hell of a lot of drugs during my lifetime.

I went to most of the Day on the Green Concerts that CalFan2 went to. ( seeing I was with him at the time.) The best ones to me Heart, Peter Frampton, and Led Zeplins last USA concert. I have seen America at Chronicle Pavilion, The Eagles like 3 times Elton John and Billy Joel couple a years ago, and believe it or not Barry Manilow at the Shark Tank also a couple a years ago. Good times
