Can you imagine if San Diego drafted or even signed as an UFA Maynard? The threads that would erupt...

Kids who did go to class (may not of been great students), passed their classes and get hurt for our entertainment, should always be respected for their effort. I will never forget the sandwich hit he took. One of the hardest double hits I have ever seen. If he wasn't all in he would of not gotten up, but he did and played on.
What people don't realize about Maynard is that hes the perfect "Kapernick and the Like" practice player. He will get paid for a long time although he may never see the field. I use to tell people in the stands that he would have a long career but they would just politely smile and move away. They thought I meant playing in it, I guess. One thing they say about Zach and get ready, he's a well spoken highly articulate player, yikes!! Meltdown time.:axe

What is with people?

Tedford recruited exactly 1 QB to Cal that has been drafted.

Tedford recruited QBs not drafted:
Steve Levy
Cary Dove
Nate Longshore
Kyle Reed
Joe Ayoob
Kevin Riley
Beau Sweeney
Brock Mansion
Zach Maynard
Allan Bridgford*
Austin Hinder*

*While not looking likely, these guys are still playing and have a shot.

Moreover, thousands of players have played for Cal, the vast majority were never drafted by the NFL. They are still Golden Bears and deserve our respect.

Sounds like Diana simply has a crush on ole' Zachy....."undiscovered diamond"?. Well, at least I'm in before the deluge of polarizing posts. I honestly don't like the guy for a number of reasons but I don't think we should disrespect him since he is a Golden Bear.

Why are you assuming the OP is "disrespecting" ZM? All he is saying is ppl think ZM will get drafted.

Is it perhaps your own deep-down disrespect for ZM that makes you think the OP is disrespecting ZM by implying he might get drafted?

Oh, calm down poop.

I'm not trying to "pile on." I just thought it was interesting that those two tweets were retweeted by Maynard himself, indicating that he probably thinks that he has some chance to get drafted. The fact that he retweeted them while the draft is still going on is at least interesting.

The list of JT QB fails makes me think of the U$C QB NFL Hall of Shame:

Todd Marinovich /First Round; Pick # 24. SUCKED AND BAT SH*T Crazy!

Carson Palmer/Heisman Trophy/First Round; Pick # 1. CHOKE!

Matt Leinart /Heisman Trophy/First Round; Pick # 10. SUCKS!

Mark Sanchez/First Round; Pick # 5. SUCKS!

And then on the other hand we have Golden Bear Aaron Rodgers:

First Round; Pick # 24. THE F*cking Man and the highest paid player in football!

Matt Barkley is no Aaron Rodgers, but because he went 4th Round and will have a crappy contract there will be no expectations put on him. I hope he succeeds and buries the parade of highly credentialed U$C loser QBs who proceeded him. He is also a good guy. Just keep him off the Raiders because that appears to be a toxic combination.

The entire state of Florida puts U$C to shame when it comes to putting crappy overrated QBs in the NFL since the 1990s:

Heisman Winners:
1992 Gino Torretta Miami
1993 Charlie Ward Florida State (Not even drafted)
1996 Danny Wuerffel Florida
2000 Chris Weinke Florida State
2007 Tim Tebow Florida

Other average QBs drafted:
2001 Jesse Palmer Florida
2003 Rex Grossman Florida
2007 Chris Leak Florida (not drafted)
2010 Rusty Smith Florida Atlantic
1992 Brad Johnson FSU
1996 Danny Kanell FSU
2005 Adrian McPherson FSU
2011 Christian Ponder FSU
1992 Craig Erickson Miami
1997 Scott Covington Miami
2003 Ken Dorsey Miami

With Tyler Bray and Colin Klein still on the board, it would really surprise me if Maynard was taken. But I do agee that he is likely to become a free agent aquisition.

Dude was a terrible QB, but he was OUR QB. His time on the field has passed, now he is just like everyone else that spent time at Cal, except a little bonus for wearing the uniform and taking the hits for our entertainment.

Fun to talk about how bad Maynard, Ayoob, Vedder, etc were, but they are all more Bear than I am, IMHO. It aint just the greats and the 4.0s that get to be "us."

One needs to actually be able to make a throw to be an Arena League QB...

Well stated. I don't understand the penchant for turning on our own. All 3 of the QBs you mentioned tried their best. If they weren't good enough, that is not their fault. With respect to Maynard, he literally put his body on the line with inadequate protection in front of him.

What makes a guy a Golden Bear and worthy of our respect?

Is it enough that he played on the team and nothing more?

Must he have graduated or tried his best to graduate or have been on track to graduate?

What if he disrespected us or Cal by his on- and off-field behavior?

Does he show any respect for our traditions and what Cal means to us?

These are honest questions. The answers are not cut and dried, but for me the overall picture has to be more than just minutes on the field.

I don't feel obligated to give respect to every player who ever wore a Cal uniform. There are at least a few with whom I am not proud to be associated by their having attended Cal.

+1. Just because the kid wore a Cal uniform and played football doesnt mean he is a bigger "Golden Bear" than I, or any other alum, am. I have respect for Cal Athletics and love it - but Im not going to say they are more "Cal" than I am.

KA was a beast on the field. No doubt. No one denies that. But his off-the-field persona has definitely looked bad for Cal. If a guy's stock dropped because of injury concerns, lack of skill, etc - I'm okay with that. But for a guy's stock to drop because of failed drug tests + "bigtiming NFL execs"? Come on man.

Granted these are still "rumors". But don't you find it funny that there are these "rumors" associated with KA?

Anyways, the Chargers got a steal in KA. Im sure the character problems will go away. KA is still a heck of a player.

Well, it was said that we still have to respect ZM because he played (that was the implication I got). And, I asked if that's all it took for us as a community of fans to be called a Golden Bear. So, I thought I'd raise the questons that occurred to me. Do you think ZM deserves our respect as a Golden Bear?

The drug test rumor was refuted by ESPN. He was retested for his ankle. If people have spread more than one malicious rumor about you that has been proven to NOT be true, they do not get to keep spreading malicious rumors, each one proven to be false--then claim "but look at all these rumors surrounding you." I doubt you would find it funny.

Let me quote OskiMD from the other thread

OskiMD said:

What does this have to do with the apparently overdiluted urine drug sample? It doesn't change what many had reported about a suspicious urine sample that was likely dilute due to intentional attempt by consuming large amounts of water. Those tests don't lie, and that report doesn't contradict or prove anything. His poor interviewing, also reported by the sports media involved in the NFL draft process, didn't help either.

7 receivers were drafted ahead of KA. The "rumor" of his stock dropping because of character issues ended up being true.

Throughout KA's time here at Cal, there have been NUMEROUS rumors about his character. If you want to believe he is an angel and we should all bow down to him, be my guest.
