How long do you want to ignore this user?
Today I was entering a Vons Store in Chula Vista; pushing an empty shopping cart; when suddenly the front wheels of the cart stopped completely. The cart nosed down turning upright off the ground. It was all I could do to keep from falling into a display at the entrance to the store. I couldn't find anything jammed into the wheels, but they would not turn. I ended having to lift the front wheels off the ground to drag the shopping cart outside. I left it with the wheels off the ground so no one would use it and went to get another cart.

As I cautiously entered the store again a Von's employee came out and began working on the cart. A helpful customer told me that Von's had carts with special wheels that lock up when you pass through the portal at the entrance. Perhaps designed as a hare-brained scheme to reduce theft; they work really well at discouraging customers from entering the store. With a little refinement customers would never enter a Von's store again.
Upon returning home, I've noticed new muscle and joint pains, pain that is a cross between that felt after walking into a door and/or falling down a flight of stairs. At my age (65) the aches will last a few days; a painful reminder about shopping at Von's.

a super market discounter with excellent carts is coming to a mall right near you in Chula Vista very soon. This chain is even Berkeley based. I would tell you more, but as the saying goes, I would have to kill you first.

Ah, hmm. So the cart locked up as you were walking it? Did you make a complaint, or inquire as to why it would do that?

You mistakenly enrolled in the Von's shopping cart circuit training course

Maan, used to b*tch about them all the time while down south to see my folks.

Shoppers had to buy several of anything to qualify for the "low" price.

Hope wifeisafurd is right about more competition coming.

Signed, 65 solidatary (me too, in just a few more months)

stole this in honor of wiaf some time ago. guess the time is right..

The manufacturers of those anti-theft carts are liberals trying to get you to go to the Whole Foods in Hillcrest.

I remember growing up in Los Angeles that Vons had 3 stores.

For upper class areas, Vons was Paviliions.

For regular areas, Vons was Vons.

And for lower class areas, well, I forgot the name.

It's sort of like with Safeway and Pak n Save.

It's the same store, but a different name for lower class areas.

(Oddly, though, the Pak N Save I shop at in Emeryville is 1 block from Pixar, so it gets upper class people. Yet it has its name because it's near West Oakland.)

Didn't we use to have a 'hall of fame' posts section on BearInsider? I'd like to nominate this post to the hall of fame. :p

Bearinsider's description of Class BBS says this..
Quote:

This board contains posts that readers have deemed to be "Classic", worthy of retention for all to read. In addition, we have in our archives a collection of excellent posts made before our affiliation with the ESPN network - and before that Scout - and we hope to have those added to this board soon.

But, sorry Hanky, there's hardly any there there:

I guess you haven't done much grocery shopping! This type of cart security has been around for a long time...or maybe it because of the area I live in!

Hey. Why don't you just carry a hand basket? Get a clue...you don't eat that much and how much TP do you need anyway?

I've had three knee operations and shoulder surgery; I confess sometimes that using a shopping cart is better than using a cane or walker; I move much faster which was part of the problem. Three grand daughters are visiting later this month and Vons had been having 12 pack specials on canned drinks (buy 5 get 2 or 3 free sort of thing) which are a little too much for a hand basket.
Part of the problem is that I also shop at Walmart for items Costco doesn't carry. Down here at the Eastlake Walmart they have non-rolling carts; two flat wheels and one that doesn't turn if you're lucky. I've learned to give the cart a quick shove when I feel a Walmart cart start to slow down. This time the Von's cart shoved back. The only other grocery stores I patronize are Ralphs and Sprouts; their carts are better maintained.
Over 20+ years of marriage I have gained over 45 pounds (about 225 now). In stores I've noticed very large people (300 pounds +) get out of my way if they see me and a shopping cart headed their way. Yes I agree, you really need to think about dieting when people 100 pounds heavier than you are afraid of running into you. That might explain why the Vons employee was so concerned that I might have damaged the cart but never asked how I was.
Fortunately Ralphs had a 12 pack of Stella Artois on sale for $5 off. I'm still stiff with some muscle aches, but I'm feeling much better:beer:

I have sent the account I posted to Vons; no reply yet.

I am very thankful that the Girl Scouts are no longer selling cookies at that entrance or I would have sent two or three off in an ambulance and made the ten o'clock news.
 thanks Stella A

I'm sorry to hear about your kenetic mobility problems (knees). I walk to the store(s) to shop (Monterey Market, Berkeley Natural Foods, and TJ's) use a hand basket and never buy more than I can carry home. The exception being a trip to Costco maybe once a month.

I face great hazards crossing the street at a stoplight controlled intersection from whacked out panicky drivers seeking a non-existent parking space and who seem to have never seen a pedestrian before, especially on Saturday. I've been hit ---once in the crosswalk after waiting for traffic to clear by a hipster dude in a Jag who had stopped and waited for me to proceed before deciding to put me and a bag of produce on the hood of his car while he checked his cell phone, and again in the parking lot by a speeding menopausal headcase in a state of panic trying to squeeze her 2010 Volvo between a vegetable bin and a wheelchair (in use) racing for a perceived opening (parking slot).

It's even worse inside the store. C'est la vie.

When I first moved to San Diego there were a lot of pedestrians killed, for the same reason; they were not in a crosswalk when hit. Then I looked around at the intersections near my office; none of them had painted crosswalks, even if they had pedestrian walk signals. It's gotten slightly better over twelve years. It's about two miles to the nearest supermarket,
Von's is about 4 miles, I shop for food once a week or so, buying more than I could carry home on foot. This is the farthest I've lived from supermarket, with a couple of steep hills in between. Just not conducive to pedestrian shoppers.

If this was the NHL would you go with undisclosed 'upper' or 'lower' body injury?

Also, about you really flying around out there. No doubt. I bet you could make all the purchases.
