I cut my cord, but still watch the series on delishowsdotcom.

For those who have not read the books, up thru Book 5, there is much more in store. GRR Martin implied he will have Book 6 by summer 2014, which would be rocket speed for him. He knows the show is catching up to him. Book 5 is my second favorite of the current books. Arya is definitely going to be a bad ass. As is Jon Snow. The killer rumor is that Jon Snow is not, in fact, the bastard son of Eddard. He is the son of another. And I will leave it there...

This rumor is definitely an internet fan favorite, which is why I think GRRM will not pursue the plotline. Who knows where he will take us.

R+L=J. I'm 10000% sure about that, and the showrunners have already basically admitted this.

In the books the Hound conking Arya over the head was the ending of the chapter immediately following the RW itself, and the way it was written strongly implied she was killed then and there (he threw an axe at her head).

That is what I call Starkocide! I have not read the books but I hope Arya Stark goes all Jedi on those mother f#ckers!

If I were to start reading the books, after watching the TV series, can I get by starting with book 2 or 3?

I believe you are correct in your analysis. . . .though in the books, Jon Snow gets the opportunity to lead the north from Stannis a little later on. Snow turns down the offer and stays as the leader of the NW. I could be misremembering incorrectly though.

Super uncool. Spoilers are NOT ok if you've read the books or read wikipedia.

The Hound whacked her in the head with the flat of the axe.

Read the books before it's too late. They are so much richer than the TV series.
Last summer I read all 5 books on a Kindle e-reader in about 2.5 months. The first 50 - 100 pages are a bit archaic, full of strange language and concepts, but help set the scene for the rest of the novels.
The novels are like literary crack.

Makes sense. Ned must had put J on the night's watch to prevent him for gaining the throne.
HaasBear04;842128195 said:
You wouldn't want to skip the first one..it's really, really good. I'd advise on waiting until Martin gets closer to actually finishing the series before picking up the books. The wait is freaking brutal.

The show picked a very good looking Danerys Targaryan. Also Team read-the-books.

Fair enough; yet my point stands. Many many people (myself included) thought she might be dead, it was very ambiguous. Not ambiguous in the show at all, which is a change I liked.

GOT actress with most va-va-va-voom factor: Esme Bianco (character now deceased).

If this were true, how would JS have a claim to the throne? He would still be a bastard, since R was married to another woman.
running bear;842128352 said:
Having a son who is well liked is the cleanest transition. A review of European history reveals lots of folks have can have claims to the throne, and the strength of that claim is proportional to the strength of the claimant's supporters, not the closeness of the relation. For instance, William the Conquer was a bastard, but was able to secure his duchy of Normandy by winning a few battles against the other claimants.

Longshanks: Who is this person who speaks to me as though I needed his advice?
Prince Edward: I have declared Phillip my high counselor.
Longshanks: Is he qualified?
Phillip: I am skilled in the arts of war and military tactics, Sire.
Longshanks: Are you? Then tell me, what advice would you offer on the present situation?
