> CyberBears.ORG Grand Opening was on September 03, 1998

been there done that. and more than a few of us still present posted at predecessor fansonly bbs website too.

[kiddies can't imagine slower than sn*t dialup modems, molasses rolling uphill both ways]

here's one memory about fansonly, feel free to add yours too, OR EVEN BETTER cybears.org:
commuting south to visit family in san diego, out in the sticks crashed fansonly offices near oceanside, seeking <gosh what was his name> the literally ever powerful bbs moderater at the time. whoops, turned out mr sanity was gone occupying BurningMan that week.

ohkay, that's all i got, except for puzzlement nobody else noticed the 15th anniversary notice?

signed (in the day) Jester Of BS, an honorific gifted by an unavoidable web dominating presence back then: "sultan of swat [Smack?]" aka bluebl**d.

ps: this post will scroll off page 1, just like other ignored threads, in 16 to 24 hours.

Congrats to the community for making it to 15 years.

As for the rest of your post Sini...I think the only way I'll understand it is if I smoke a joint or two.

How can we forget the place that gave birth to "Booth"

Or the posters who found it after going to Cyberbears.com

Or CalMike and his posts interweaving Cal football with his Adonis complex.

Good times.

I don't think I ever had anything to do with the fansonly bbs, but I subscribed to Gobears-Digest while living in DC in 1994-5... BearPipes told me I had to check out this new site called Cyberbears that was leaps and bounds ahead of the Gobears-Digest, but I was slow to make the change. Started lurking sometime in 1999, posting later that year.

NOC, but I just didn't want CJay's post to scroll off page 1, just like other ignored threads, in 16 to 24 hours.

Yeah, I remember the Gobears-Digest days run by Sean Yoda and the beginnings of the Cybears website. I posted infrequently, lost my username/ password and changed several names before settling on this one.

Funny thing that this should happen to be the 15th anniversary of cyberbears.ORG.

I was reminiscing about a thread just the other day started by a "Mr. Spock" of a certain deconstruction of a certain poster named PowRipp.

It was a fun moment.

The couple of times I was "misdirected" to that "other" website compelled me to read the Wikipedia entry on "bear (gay culture)" so that I could fully understand what I had just stumbled upon. "Not that there is anything wrong with that." Jerry Seinfeld

I think my fondest memory is sitting down at the Unit 3 AC computer lab as a sophomore in '98 and logging on to cyberbears.org. I don't know why the headphones weren't plugged in, but the speaker blared 'Big C' and everyone glared at me as if playing the school's fight song was a crime. After that, I was always mindful of quickly clicking into the message board whenever I was in a public space.

Indeed, that was some classic writing, worthy of Hall of Fame status.

GreyBear once got a call from the IT folks at Gallo.

That organization had no sense of humor. We had a few Cal people working for the winery. Gallo blocked access to most websites across the internet. I made the arguments that banks and alumni websites like Cyberbears should be allowed. I should have specified .ORG instead of .COM. I think the hairy gay guys were a bit of a surprise.

What I thought quite remarkable about the inception of cyberbears.org was that there was such a mass migration from the fansonly site. It isn't like traffic to fansonly got redirected. Unless I'm remembering this all wrong, Chris encouraged us all to move over to his new independent site, and we pretty much all did.

For a brief period of time, I would occasionally wander over to fansonly and see it was virtually dead, with only an occasional post here or there from people who hadn't gotten the memo. Occasionally, someone would ask, "Why is Cal's site so dead?" and someone would respond, "We're all over at cyberbears.org," frequently with the warning not to confuse it with cyberbears.com. Occasionally, someone would post without noticing the place was dead, and often there would be a reply to say where we all were.

I soon stopped ever checking out fansonly, and I think they eventually sold to CBS or something like that, but cyberbears.org sure killed their Cal message board.

Ah, I miss the good ol' days of CyberBears. When the majority of fans were still behind Tom Holmoe and optimistic that he could eventually take us to a Rose Bowl if he could just get a darned offensive coordinator. When there were oh so few of us who knew how to have disagreements with Blueblood without anyone getting nasty. When we had Golden Oski awards. When CJay wasn't so SiniCal, and indeed, had support for the Golden Oski for Most Optimistic CyberBear. Did CJay win once? If so, seems hard to believe. KoreAmBear should have won every year, and indeed, KoreAmBear should have been disqualified from winning and the award renamed the KoreAmBear MOC award and given to whoever was the #2 MOC. Yes, indeed, those were the days.

Then there is an insignificant part of cyberbears history that is probably meaningless to everyone around here but me (or maybe one or two others if they still come here). I had a good friend who introduced me to the fansonly board, he would cut and paste and email me posts he thought were particularly interesting, so eventually I started reading the darned thing myself, and then worse yet, posting. He only lurked, he feared replies that would make him feel stupid. After the migration to cyberbears, I persuaded him to post a few interesting things he had to say by letting me cut and paste into my handle, so if people were nasty in response, he could feel that they were targeting me, not him (what a weird world this Internet thingy is), and people generally had positive things to say. He questioned whether people only responded positively because they thought it was me posting, and to prove this was not the case, I persuade him to make a handful of posts which he made under the handle sonsof. He got friendly responses, but after finally getting one pretty nasty response, he didn't post much anymore, returned to generally lurking, and never posted again after bearinsider was born.

Sadly, he will never post again, he passed away from cancer a little over 4 years ago. The Bears never played in the Rose Bowl in his lifetime -- they last did so less than 18 months before he was born. The Bears never won a basketball conference championship in his lifetime -- they won one a few months before he was born, and began a conference championship season a few months after he died. Ah, the life of a diehard Cal fan.

I would go on, and on, and on, in order to justify the Golden Oski I once won for most long-winded (I believe the poster now known as FiatSlug was my main competition), but instead, I'll leave this post brief. Happy 15th anniversary (plus one day now) to Cyberbears, THE cyberlair of the Golden Bears.

I posted on cyberbears.org. I remember the debates about Holmoe. Amazing that plenty of people actually defended him even in 2000.

This board's glory days were when it was associated with scout.com. So much more interaction with fans from other teams. So many more interesting posters back then....

Migrating to this ESPN-based sh!tboard changed all that. WeAreSC also turned into a sh!tboard after doing the same.

Luckily, this is still the MAIN message board for Cal sports fans...by far!

I don't remember the chronology exactly. fansonly had message boards. They redid the the site and then the boards were heavily moderated. We didn't like that so moved to CyberBears.ORG.

Remember that too. His supporters were even convinced he would "do the honorable thing" and quit and forego the money on the extension if he did not have a winning season.

Yeah, he's the one who "discovered" Alison Stokke, and for that, he deserves honorary Bear status.

I remember the Stanfurd people that would come here, Stanford Observer and Cajun Lurker, each had their own personalities. When I first started posting (2000?), under a different handle, I took it upon myself one day to eviscerate Stanfurdites everywhere and Stanford Observer got all offended. Even David Dempster thought I came on a little too strong, so I had to explain myself to him...

I sorta miss PowRipp: He was something, as was the BlueBloodBear of that era. What ever happened to the other frequent posters, such as Ramtor? It seems as though some have simply changed their handles.

I also cherish my Golden Oski from the days of yore. I miss the wide open "pre-buttoned down " era before the website started taking itself too seriously. This loss of a sense of humor has taken a lot of the fun from the website....

Oh well..........

I think the scout nostalgia is misplaced. The times were good because the football team was so good - not because of scout.

No sir, his best fansonly honorific was SULTAN of Smack/Swat [a rose is a rose is..]

What happened here at the end was Blue challenged moderators authoriton, and got a one week timeout. Unrepentent he came right back afterwards with a double-down.. earning permaban honors. Chastened maybe, he ventured a civil transparent alt-handle, which real fast got blasted out of the park too.
